Filthy went on a rant tonight about the Yamaha 250’s transmission problems. He wanted to spill more beans, but (wisely) stopped himself. It’s purely speculation, but I wonder if that’s been the cause of some injuries for the YZ boys over the last year or so.
This is the first I’ve heard of this, so apologies if it’s been discussed.
There's a fast local kid here who's had several yz250f yranny failures. At least 3.
How fast is that fast local kid ?
One thing to note is the stock transmission isn't designed to take on a 20% gain in power over stock.
Since covid don't know where material and parts are coming from and Yamahas durability reputation not as good as it once was and sure they aren't the only one.

Is this Bobby Reagan looking for more riders?
Good question. Here in alberta a fast local intermediate kid who can qualify and score a top 20 at one of our nationals is probably a podium threat in the c class at lorettas.
I don’t know the cost of having transmissions built for your team by an outside company, but I have to wonder if Star hired one less rider, would they be able to completely offset the cost of outsourced transmissions?
I know Phil doesn’t ride for Star, buts it’s being alluded to that they’re having the same issues with transmissions.
I had a transmission failure at 60hrs on my 2020 yz250f.. blew out fourth and fifth... and I'm slowwww lol
Star outsources transmissions, I haven't heard of them having the same issues.
Probably needs a cush drive hub and less chain growth/looser chain. Or billet cases depending on the "failure mode" like internet engineers like to say.
How much more torque tho?
I find it hard to believe that they are designing and manufacturing something that wouldn't be expected to handle a 20% increase in power. I know gear ratios change, but is the basic design and components all the different in the 250 than the 450? If the problem is in the 250 only it would seem that it's a specific design flaw.
I wonder if the 6 speed from a yz250fx is any stronger?
RESPECT to Phil...listening to the Monday show...
The bike has an issue...he's trying to speak up for all YZ riders. Guy CARES for his fellow YZ riders...love that guy.
I was riding my cousins 23 yz250f and trans failed at 30 hours, one of the gears had broken. Would have cost him $4200, luckily insurance took care of it. He got it back from the shop and gear broke again 5 hours after it was rebuilt and back to the shop it went. He got it back a couple months ago and so far so good with about 10 hours on it since the second rebuild. I was all for buying one but when that happened at 30 hours I’ll pass on Yamahas.
My 16 year old has over 300 hours on his 2021 YZ250f, zero tranny work, shifts perfectly. I just rode it a few days ago. He is pretty fast and rides it hard, but he DOES use the clutch when he shifts (or so he tells me, lol). Bike has been absolutely bullet proof so far, now I jinxed it I know. Motor is stock, but does have a full FMF exhaust.
Never had a 250 YZF, but i've been riding 250 YZ's from 08 until 2022, and I had gear box problems on EVERY single bike.
And yet i'm not riding SX, or in the mud, and the bikes never had more than a Vertex piston and a pipe...
Tried every gearbox oil, several quantity of oil, from 750ml to 1L, to me there was just nothing to do...
I had about 120 hrs on a 2019 yzf250 and now 42 hrs on a 2022 with zero tranny issues.
Came off a RM250 where the tranny was destroyed every 10-15hrs. I don't use the clutch much.
Pit Row
14 years of banging your head against the wall is some real dedication
Star and PC do as well as quite a few MXGP teams, some even running 4 speed boxes or similar. PC used (or still use, a smart fella like ML will know, a dumbass like me does not) a truly world class company who make fear sets and components for everything fro touring cars to MotoGP and beyond.
Then there's the usual gear polishing (not that that's a strength benefit) and even heard of some cryo treating or shot peening stock parts/gears like in the car world from a few people over here in the UK.
I agree, but I don't ride much and do not change the bike every year, far from that.
I only had like 4 bikes within those 14 years, and had pbms every time around 50 hours.
Just wanted to keep riding 2 strokes, and never felt confortable on the KTM's at that time, so no choice.
TBH I really love the YZ's, those bikes are awesome, but finally got tired of this and fell in love with the new gen KTM 23, so it was really the perfect moment to change
I believe that the PC team used (or still do as said above) to make build there gear box in UK from a company that makes gear box for formula 1 or some thing like that...
No. Just added gears.
Really interesting topic.
Same shit!
Wonder how the gear box will hold on the Fantic 300 BTW
Guess I'll just have to buy the 2 stroke.
Can’t that be said about all of the manufactures?
Schofield won C class then two years later struggled to make a top 20..
Didn't think much about it until reading this I have seen a couple, the gears were seizing on the output shafts then breaking trying to shift into that gear. And only Yamaha that I can remember....
I know of a good few 450 transmission s (gear box in our language lol) breaking here .at least 5 with very few hrs on them .
Ps. All bikes were not 24 s .
