It’s not just moto, and it’s the universal sign of a journalist without an educational background in journalism. It’s never something that is taught, in fact, it is often taught that there should be a conscious effort to not do that. I’m a fan of Darkside but I do wish he would quit doing it.
Darkside is really bad at this, and also asking multiple questions in one question, with leading statements. Unfortuantly I find it hard to pay attention to his stuff at times.
Steve can also fall into asking the riders leading questions and basically but not as bad.
I came to this thread hoping someone was going to throw some hate at Mr. Side 😂😂😂
Hard to break the habit when he has 20 years in asking his coworkers “digging these ditches really sucks, don’t you think?”
OP answered his own question by using the oxymoron “moto journalist “.
Yes, this has been a pet peeve of mine for a few years now. Do not give a monologue leading up to asking the question....just ask the question.
They all do it to some degree, Steve, Weege, Anton...sorry ML, love ya bud, but you are the worst . Darkside does it a little but its not too noticeable. Lewis does it in a subtle, edgy way perhaps. It comes across as a hard hitting question with perhaps a hint of confrontation.
Supercross Screech takes three times as long to ask as it takes the riders to answer.
That’s because all the riders say these days is “um yeah we just tried to get a good start and um focus on hitting our marks and log laps, super stoked and thanks to the whole team”
I love that my nickname for her caught on....
She is just awful and they need to dump her.
As for the presser folks....it's like most of them just want to hear themselves talk.
You’re not the best christian are you🤦♂️
Damn, I'm the worst?
Noted.
He's one of Jamie's closest friends.
I agree everyone does it and it’s poor journalism. It gives the riders an out where they can just agree with whatever the interviewer states. It’s simple just ask the question.
how was your bike this week?
what did you learn from your mistakes last week?
what do you need to improve on?
everyone wants to be buddy buddy with the riders so they don’t want to ask blunt pointed questions.
I was audibly groaning when the gypsy tales man kept asking about in-helmet walkie talkies.
Pit Row
Sandberm656, -Vitard comment section activist... I have a question for the moto media.
So I imagine when you are interviewing a rider, some of the thoughts that goes through your head is to limit confrontation, a want for the rider/parent/team to not be upset with your question and to ensure that you are able to get access in the future with said rider for more interviews.
So my question is, what are some of the thoughts that goes through your head when interviewing a rider?
See what I did there? I gave you possible answers to the question I am about to ask.
Its no big deal. And I really do not, like others have stated they want, you guys (motomedia) to be more like other sports media where its a constant game of gotcha and inflated drama for clicks
We are not asking them for click bait or to create drama. We just want to hear the riders own thoughts not regurgitate the answer the interviewer gave them.
example:
‘Chase you were much better at X race, what can you point to? Was it bike set up, more confidence, a good night sleep?
’yea you know I think it was all those things we changed some stuff on the bike and I had a really good week of practice so my confidence was high’
we learned nothing in that exchange and we don’t get any of the riders real thoughts. The question just needs to be:
‘chase why were you so much better this week?’
More annoying is the fact the media know real scoops and facts, like injuries, behind the scenes things etc, yet don’t report on it because they wanna all be buddies..
I thought it was cool to hear the riders perspective on it and was pleasantly surprised how open they are to the idea. Would love two way communication as we could get some serious incite into what goes on during certain moments of the race but even one way communication would be great from a safety standpoint.
That is a spot on example of what we are talking about. Well said soggy.
He's the worst. (and no, it's not the accent or that he isn't American)
It is pretty bad by all parties involved. A big bro show for the most part which is fine. But good clean real equations are easy to ask. So many things could be changed in our sport to further it or at least make it appear more professional. We have rain, and a constantly changing track. We don’t get real shots of how it is developing etc. F1 goes into detail about the surface of the track and it is the same basically every year. We can’t even devote real time and effort into a proper program to inform people of what is happening during a broadcast. Instead, a cookie cutter watered down thoughtless program that leans towards people who don’t care about our sport.
I honestly thought it was a good question. Not necessarily because it should happen, but because it was out of the norm and forced the riders to think independently.
How many iterations of “I’ve been training hard and the boys built me a killer bike. We’ve been hitting our marks and that’s how we got on the box this week” do you want to hear?
Yeah. Yeah for sure.
It's an endemic problem with moto journalists. Not surprising given the education levels in the sport. Seems like it should be obvious to ask open ended questions that prompt the rider to elaborate vs a long question that gets a short answer .
Wordnerd was the worst, he would put out his opinion is a long drawn out question to try to see if the rider would agree with him, glad that dork has moved on by making a fool of himself in politics even though nobody knows or cares.

I find myself saying "shut up and let them answer the question"
100% fact! Yes, the industry dislikes change and difficult questions. The industry has a history of retaliation rather than progress. I for one like riders having opinions, personality, and speaking their minds. Feld and MxSports would see the sport get more interesting if they allowed all of the Podcast guys to ask questions and yes that even means people they don't like. Just ask the question and let the person answer on their own please!
