Hi guys

What's the experience of the guys who have jumped from.a 450 to the 300sx?

Im currenly on a 23 CRF450 50th anniversary  and someone I know is selling a 300 sx with WP 6500 pro set up forks with the  bldder conversion shock. Has after marker wheels ect.

I rode a stock 300 a while ago for a few laps very cautiously just to try and was surprised how much you could lug it down low. It felt light and easy to move around.

Im.a vet c grade and ride for fun on a weekend with friends.

Wanting to hear from guys who made the jump and did or dis not like the change.

Ps I haven't owned a 2 stroke since 2001 lol.

Went from a 19 crf450 to a 23 300sx and love it. I don’t race every weekend anymore and this bike is just plane fun but doesn’t ware you out late in the Moto when you’re a little tired like a 450 would. Don’t get me wrong I don’t get as good of starts racing anymore but as far as lap times go they are the same. Only difference is I can stay faster on the 300 longer. I’d say unless you’re a serious racer and race all the time the 300 is not gonna disappoint you. I did just do a RK Tek head and ported my Cases and cylinder. I have a pro circuit pipe on it and it’s really not far off a 450.

I don't race on weekends. I'm just a 55 yo vet who rides on a Saturday with mates.

Wasn't sure if the 300 was a lot more work on the track. My local track is a mix of deep sand with hard pack and some nice jumps.

I hadn't considered really getting one due to the expensive suspension work needed. But seeing this is already done it has me thinking

If you aren’t racing, just buy whatever makes you excited to ride.

How much difference did the Rk head and other mods make?

Serious suspension work needed? Compared to what? Maybe only compared to the old Yamaha.

Yeah some people are happy with stk suspension! Others are just picky ( me included ) I’ve had a couple KTM’s , I liked them, except I couldn’t ever get happy with suspension, even after a couple revalves and am not willing to pay thousands more to get it right!  That being said, I’d like to try out the 300 !

👍👍👍💥👆👆👆👆👆👆👆💥👍👍👍

THIS EXACTLY!!!

I’m a 58 year old that has ridden/raced strictly for fun since my first real race bike at 18 and a used 1983 YZ125! I just swapped my 2023 YZ450f for a 2023 KTM 300SX and I have ZERO regrets! I had ridden & raced YZ thumpers back to the original 1998 400f…00 & 02 426’s, 05, 09, 15 & 23 YZ 450’s (with 2 or 3 other colors sprinkled in over the years!) and I loved them all! BUT I had plenty of 2-strokes from 83 to 98 and I loved all those bikes too!
Is it easier to ride at my most competitive speed on the YZ? Clear obstacles more easily? Is the SSS suspension on the YZ better and easier to set up? Probably YES to all the above BUT the KTM is an absolute BLAST to rip around on with a power delivery that is unlike anything I have ever ridden on a 2-stroke dirt bike! It CAN be lugged down low and then rolls into a thrilling rush of very useable 2-stroke power that is controlled & thrilling all at the same time!

The rear shock works very well and the WP fork, while it’s not as convenient as the “set it & forget it” KYB SSS fork on the YZ, has been working well enough for me that I am not compelled to make any drastic changes to it other than just taking the time to bleed the air out and make sure the PSI is at the recommended setting a couple times during the day!
For what it’s worth, I raced up to Intermediate/B before I got old enough to start racing the Vet classes and would consider myself a back of the pack Vet B rider now? (I rode his past Saturday at the local MX track and I jumped every obstacle on the track EXCEPT the big showcase 100 footer in the middle of the track! 🤪) AND I wouldn’t hesitate to sign up for a race on the 300SX if the interest & opportunity came along!

In my 40th year of MX, I am probably in my moto twilight…I just wanted to make it all about the fun and the nostalgia of my youth these days, and NOTHING seems to capture that feeling for me more than the SOUND and the SMELL of a cool, well sorted 2-stroke! Even my wife says she LOVES the smell of the race gas/pre-mix and as soon as I run the bike and the pleasant aroma wafts into the house she instantly feels 17 again, and back at the track with me when we met in high school!
I think you should do what YOU think best suits your honest interest & intent for the riding you are doing at this point in your life??! I made the very switch that you are considering and I don’t have a single regret with my decision!
Good luck & I hope this rambling post helps you with your decision! 😎 👍❗️

Vet mx and I have to choose between a 300sx and 450? I’m always choosing the 450.

That’s coming from a guy with 3 two strokes currently..

The new stuff is pretty good. Better than most of the other bikes. That being said I ran my stock stuff first, then my cone valves, then bought some ohlins stuff. Just for fun tho

sounds like whatever bike you buy you will be messing with your suspenders. I don’t blame you. But if you are the typical vet guy 450, if you are a Mike brown or Keefer kinda vet guy 300.

I've had 4 KTM's ranging from 2018 to 2023 and never liked any of the Air fork set ups and some had some serious $$ thrown at them. So in my book the bikes need some serious money spent on the suspension for me anyway

Im a typical Vet definitely not a Mike Brown or Keefer style of rider. Although sometimes I wish I was.

Keefer and Mike brown riding abilities?   Or are you saying how good of shape they're in?
