Back in 2007 - 2008 that bike seemed to be the end of little 2-strokes.
What happened ?
So why didn't the CRF150R take off......as expected.
It's the answer to a question nobody asked.
They F’d it up. Would’ve sold a ton as a CR150R.
Probably a combo. It was a wonderful engine if they could have made it quieter. The one we had was louder than a lot of full size race bikes and only tolerable with a choked up aftermarket system. Then you have kids growing out of bikes quickly at the stage when they are on that kind of bike, and I don't think it has the resale. That engine, quieter, in a full size frame would have been a good step up/entry level bike above the XRs

Given lack of sales and competitive results, why would they keep going with this?

Have they made any/much improvements over the years or is it relatively the same?
By dropping it from their lineup, I have to imagine that would just push the few sales they have to other brands so cheaper to put out new graphics with little R&D required to keep it going and grab what sales they can
I can imagine that by throwing in the towel they might be effectively admitting that that 2strokes are better. And they can’t have that.
I thought (and I might be wrong), that Honda expected it to be legal in the 85 class, but it was forced into the supermini class where it wasn't competitive.

The chassis, weight, and rider triangle isn’t great at all. Also, they are not as efficient as the two strokes to maintain.

Not really, big wheel and small wheel versions. My gf years ago rode one and I liked it, remember it being a chunky little bike.
Yamaha made one too and shelved it so that's telling.
I think they are purchased for “trail” bikes a lot. The large wheel version is a blast to ride.
I bought one (08 used) for my son back in 2013 and I always wondered why there weren't more out at the races. I rode it once in our back yard (have a arena X style track) and couldn't stop smiling so I bought me a 08, I'm 6'2" 260lbs and have had more fun riding it in the yard than I could explain ! It's the adult pit bike !!
Always thought of putting one of those engines in a CR125 frame but don’t have the space to work on a project like that these days.

Not legal in the 85 class, not really competitive in the supermini class. FC built Mumford a fuel injected one that RIPPED and the ama put a stop to that too.
What? Lol Had nothing to do with killing the 110 market. Dealership ready klx110 with 65 forks?? It’s an 85…it was part of their move away from 2 strokes completely.

Cranksworks helped with this 09 150r. Perfect bike for a mini sand track in johnson valley where it gets ridden most at. My big bike will overheat due to it being so tight.
I say that cause my local goped/ mini shop went out of business 🤷♂️ Or Honda choosing to never update the mini 4 stroke. Because they did not have to. It sold. To your girl friend and mine. And now i have it. We all win
Honda replacing their cr85 with the 150 had nothing to do with your local lawn mower shop going out of business. Honestly have no idea what you’re even getting at.
Fun bike...I had enough fun on one to wad up at WOT and end up with a broken femur at 13. God I was a stupid kid. Also probably the hardest four stroke starting bike i ever owned.
I remember watching Mumford race that thing. It sounded like a 250f and he flew on it.
I believe you are mistaken what bike is being discussed here. This thread is about the CRF150RB. RB stands for race bike. We are not talking the chic model.
Not being able the race the 80cc class. End of story. Great bikes though. An adult can rip on one.
That bike is made for 10-15yr old riders. It weighs 185lbs and the KTM85 weighs 158lbs. 27lb difference for a kids that weigh between 85-120lbs is probably a large factor
It’s the best wife/girlfriend bike at the track that I could come up with. Putts around like an XR75 down low but revs out like a race bike if they improve. Looks racy and cool too not like a trail bike.
Was Mumford the last fast kid to get factory support riding one? The only nationally known kid I remember on one was Webb.
It amazes me why Honda didn’t go more forward with them, aluminum frame, fuel injection. Make them look the 250/450s. They would sell like hot cakes.
Yoder was the last one. He rode it for FC after Mumford.
