Why is Unidilla no longer grass?

It seems Unidilla  being grass was almost universally thought of as cool. Why did it stop?

Because times change and rutocross is what everyone seems to do now. Can you imagine the fallout if Dilla said fuckall and let the grass grow? Old days, track was used once a year.

When i rode Rewind in 2019 , it was grass, not as long as it used to be, but it was green for the first guys out there.

We raced the grass track on the friday night and that was moved into the long grass, really enjoyed that .

They kind of have to keep the prep in-line with the rest of the series. Also they used to only have the National on the National track but in recent years even before the Covid amateur races they had on it they have done gncc on the track and mx rewind. So even if they wanted to not prep it the same it just wouldn’t get enough off time to grow grass on it again before the National.

I wasn’t aware they race the track so much now. I thought they had another track they used for amateurs. That explains why, Thank you.

Man, Casey Illinois was no fun a couple of weeks ago. It was rutted like what used to be a mud race that was almost canceled.

Don't know if they still do but used to run a Quad national there. Nothing ruins a track faster.

Miss those chants. Also miss the annual light a round hay bale on fire and role it down the hill. Saturday nights were absolute chaos at one point 😂

I know what ruins a track even faster than quads, sidecars.

There hasn't been a Quad national at Dilla for a couple years.

With the exception of the National, the Rewind and Jday, all the amateur racing was on the U2 amateur track this year.

MX Sports would 100% not allow them to leave it grass, as cool as it would look. The weather is a huge variable, and they can mitigate that to a degree with soil prep.

I do not, that's me purely speculating based on past observations and common sense. Even if they left it grass, it's only going to have that aesthetic for press day, which would look cool. By the time the first practice is underway, the grass would be gone and the complaints about the track surface would start. Again, this is just my opinion. Perhaps DC can chime in.

That being said, I rode on the track back in the late 90's, when it was covered in grass. It was cool for the story, but not so much for the riding. It's hard to pick out holes and rocks in the grass.

Around 50 years of erosion since those Bob Hannah photos above.  That topsoil isn't coming back any time soon.  Letting the grass grow and using the track once a year for the national would change the feel but still wouldn't be like the 1970s track.

It was a magical mystery driving down Rt. 8 and pulling up to see the VANS, walking thru the gate, seeing the untouched track. It was really a unique experience seeing the first few riders tearing up long grass, getting caught everywhere on the bike. Hell, I remember when a concession stand was run by the Edmeston VFD... it was definitely a crazy place, once a year party for many. I still have my '80 programme somewhere with Jim Holley on the cover riding a Can Am and some KTM track ribbon after the last bike went by with the 84 gp. No way it is a Euro track now.

YES...!! I was a youngster but I also remember the concession stand being run by the Edmeston VFD as well.. It was basically a old wooden shanty from my memories... There were some really great old timers from the VFD that seemed to just get a kick out of being there...

I also believe that it was also them that served up the best fried dough (Elephant Ear style) that I've still ever had to this day... Plucked out of piping hot oil and drenched in sugar. It certainly was an enjoyable and delicious way to take the chill out of a October morning.

Great memories- thanks for sharing them-  and I also will forever remember those October trips up Rt 8 and the atmosphere of rolling into the track and knowing what a blast it would always be. There isn't an October that goes by that I don't think about those days!!
