Are more riders going to get hurt trying to run Jett Lawrence's pace

Before the Haters start hatin, it's a legitimate question. On Saturday night in Anaheim we watched Justin Barcia and Chase Sexton absolutely pancake themselves into oblivion in crashes that could easily have ended their careers, while Jett Lawrence cruised around that track effortlessly and smooth as butter.  Does anyone think Jett has been coached to ride fast and steady, while the other riders are racing over their heads and on the edge of crashing. There was a thread on here where it was mentioned that he rides his Honda HRC450 at about 80% which sounds like he's on cruise control, but it's certainly fast enough to beat other factory riders who are running around 100% on the edge of crashing and maybe he's just that far talent wise above his competition.  This also reminds me of when Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart were battling and if the whole time RC knew if he just ran his usual race pace in control and James Stewart at 100%, which was his usual style he'd eventually take a digger that would take himself out of Championship contention.  All these factory riders are talented beyond measure, but then there are the anomalies at the top like RC, McGrath and Jett Lawrence that completely change riding styles on how to win multiple Championships, while having less injuries that shortened their careers.  Anyways! I think unless some rider does their homework, were in for a long period of Jett Lawrence championships, but maybe Dangerboy will be the one who figures out how to beat him consistently.

Poll

Is Jett Lawrence going to change SX/MX racing technique that other factory riders are going to copy.

Riders were throwing it away before Jett and they will be throwing it away after Jett, it's just part of the push to be the best.

It is only a matter of time before Jett wadds it up trying to run Jets pace.

In order to even catch Jett quading to the table was a must, I think Kenny was the only other rider pulling it off. On broadcast, I thought I saw Ken case it once or twice. Definitely sketch.

I don't think it'll be anything of Jett's doing, because he looks so smooth and in control, but more an aggressive rider that decides enough is enough and pulls an extraordinarily aggressive pass attempt that will injure him.

Yeah remember this year’s 450 SX series without Jett in the class, no one hurt themselves…..oh wait……

Barcia hasn't been the fastest on field for like 7 years maybe bar a few races so his incident has nothing to do with Jett.

Sexton is known to crash if anything he's improved greatly in that area in the past 2 years.

Jett hasn't really raced SX and with the sample size we got Sexton at the moment is faster in SX, Sexton was also the fastest in SX in the season proper.

Well! I think the SMX finally in Anaheim was about as standard a Supercross track as we've seen Jett Lawrence race on a 450 and he went 1-1 for the night, so I disagree that Sexton is faster in Supercross.  To tell you the truth, I see Jett as the favorite in 2024 SX, because Sexton is going to have some teething issues with the KTM and Eli Tomac is a wildcard on where his head is going to be after that Achilles injury.  Jett is only going to get better and he's on top of the AMA racing world right now.

It doesnt feel that way. Hes really the only 450 rider Ive ever seen that looks like hes always in control and riding well below his max. I think the fact that he never tries to run away and gap the field also helps a lot. Its pretty crazy to watch but the way he rides looks completely safe and sustainable. He basically never gets sketchy or squirley. Id be surprised if he cant sustain this pace.

Your right, Sexton may be the champ, but we ALL remember Eli was just as good if not better.

2024 will be great for us spectators, may they all stay healthy.

Jett said he let Ken by so Ken wouldn’t crash so I think he’s aware of this and moving forward he will hopefully keep riding a pace everyone is comfy with.

Jett was literally just a fraction away from crashing on the same jump as Barcia, maybe it was skill, maybe luck, but if Jett came up just a inch shorter on that same jump Barcia crashed on, Kenny could be your Tri State SMX Champ right now and the favorite going into 2024.

Tri-state champion 😂 I agree man, Jett had a few of his own sketchy moments. Still rode solid, super fast and got the job done though.

The sport is at another one of those points where the speed has taken a step up, we'll just have to see how it shakes out.

Impressive efforts from Kenny and Chase, the flashes of speed from AC, Anderson, Barcia and even Webb were cool too. Tomac is Tomac so he'll always do some calculated badass riding, so it should be fun going forward.

So that would that would mean…

SX is a 14 state champion

MX is a 10 state champion?

I mean, did you watch Supercross this year? Barcia literally grenaded himself when Jett was still on 250s. And it's not like Sexton just started crashing after Jett moved up.

9/25/2023 5:37am

That quad to table scared the crap out of me just watching it. The precision timing required to get it right at that speed is insane, and the consequences of getting it wrong would be going head first into the face of a triple doing about 45. Watching the "old man" step up and do it every lap was impressive, but it scared me. Then again, that's one of the many reasons I'm not in their shoes.

Never seen Sexton crash before Jett.

I think that Jett's ability to read the track and not ride faster than he feels the track can be ridden is another part of his skills. Or that is what it looked like. And  being ok with not winning the battle if it helps him win the war.  Not trying to win by 1 minute plus. If That is what he has been doing. And in the outdoors it looks like what he was doing.  It's so different from the other racers who have dominated before him.

I agree, Jett's riding style seem to be all about efficiency, being smooth and in control with little or no mistakes, while running the fastest laps possible with no wild scrubs, fancy whips or nac nacs.  He comes across as the perfect racer, while the other riders seem like their auditioning for Nitro Circus or Metal Mulisha.

Sexton did it consistently as well. Anderson did it a few times.

Yeah...and that was a load of crap. Jett did that out of arrogance & self protection, and I believe he made that statement to avoid criticism. Jett knew he'd have to turn his pace up to a level he might not feel comfortable with just to keep KR behind him...so he let him by.

I think there was a kicker on the lead up to that jump? You can see it in Barca’s crash, his rear wheel hops at the last second before take off…. Jett….. greatest rider of all time! Oui oui oui……

Sometimes I'm at a complete loss of words. I don't understand what's making Jett so good and makes it look so easy when going fast on a dirt bike track is the hardest thing in the world to do. How on earth is a 20 yr old kid effortlessly beating the best 450 riders in the world? I just don't get it.

Racing is racing so how hard do you want to work and risk to get on that top step?
