I just bought a used 22 gasgas 125. Took it to tomahawk mx which is deep disced dirt with lots of sawdust mixed in, and plenty of steep hills.

I’ve been slacking hardcore with fitness and am pushing 240lbs.

This Gasgas is bone stock engine wise. I put the wheels from my 350 on it, which had pirellis mounted up with bibs inside. 110 rear sand scoop.

This thing was pulling me up the hills and clearing jumps from the inside. Unbelievable. It was taking the shifts to 3rd and 4th up hills , in deep soil, without any hesitation.

Im 240lbs!

how the heck does anyone even say anyone over 190 needs a 450 lol.

these things are flat out amazing, this is what motocross should be.

So yesterday i took my 150 to Argyll mx, old school out doors with deep loam for Cali.  Bike is stock aside from carb and shorty.

Today I took the 450, all stock.

I am no quicker on the 450 (rather no less slow, lol)... but, and a big but...

The 150 is a fooking death trap, it's fast and every lap has a come to Jesus moment.  I was in a hurry, and only did 3 full motos... the 4th moto is rough and I was gassed.

Today, on the 450 rode 5 sessions no problem, even went in expert session by mistake,  ran the 20 mins, flagged off... sip of water and ran the next 20 mins in correct session back to back.

The 450 pulls 3rd all the way around,  is a pussycat to ride and runs like a moped and does nothing schizo.  It's smooth as butter and will cut an inside line under the 150 no problem.

I still can't understand why people insist the 450 is Satan's own invention.... you want Jesus, ride the 125 or 150 hard, and you'll meet him soon enough.

Have had many 125s.  Hard to ignore the fun factor.  Have two now and two 150’s.  Buddy said it best.  450s are like using a Mig welder. He calls them dummy guns.  Anyone can be fast on one.  Two strokes are more like Tig welding.  Takes little more thought and skill.  Smile

I do know exactly what you mean. You have to ride the little bikes pinned and if the track gets edgy I do get knocked around more on them.

the big bores you can tip toe around in tall gears and still go fast, they are way smoother and faster.

but the leaving it in 3rd and it taking all the effort away from you is part of why 125s are cool.

you have to ride them right, you have to do things, you have to shift, you have to search, you have to nail your lines and think things thru.

I almost picture it as a 1970 Porsche 911 vs a current 911.

old one - 3 pedal manual transmission, no abs, no traction control, rear wheel drive only, etc. no electronics aids.

new one - all wheel drive, traction control, stability control, dual clutch auto trans that shifts faster than you finish on prom night, all the electronic aids and settings.

125s are the old 911 and four strokes are the new one.

one breaks loose, you can miss shifts, miss your marks, you have to do things right, you have to work for it.

the other drive with one finger, it’s capable of more than we are without even breaking a sweat.

anyway dirtbikes are cool.

The last gen Austrian 125’s are the best 125’s ever made.  Shame they replaced them with the TBI garbage bikes.

I never said the 150 wasn't cool or fun, quite the contrary!!  Funny you mention cars, my 150 has the same powerband as my 2.4L wrx turbo.... does nothing,  hits hard, goes fast then next gear.  450 is like my mrs sport suv. Just ads throttle and enjoy the ride.

I had 2002, 2004 rm144s and now 2018 austrian 125s and 150... there has never not been a smoker in my shed since I started riding again in 2001.

Do they?  Ive never seen one that rips.  And even if they matched the power of a carb bike they are still lugging around 10 extra pounds of efi and e-start, which is dumb on a 125.

I've been on a 2019 tc125 and a 2020 yz450 the past 2 seasons. I'm mainly a practice rider, but will race on occasion. My practice day routine starts out on the 450 to get a feel for the track, then switch to the 125 and last moto is back to the 450. At 230lbs the 125 rips with nothing but a pc pipe and silencer, and t2 fuel.

This thread makes me happy. Good to hear everyone's having fun with them.

Just picked up a good ol' '17 KTM 125 yesterday. Stuck AJ's jetting specs and opened the stock slide out to almost a 5.0 and fitted a Shorty/Fatty combo yesterday. Guess I'll hold fire on the VHM head and 12* piston and see what's up first.

I rode my mrs 150 a while ago and it was a world apart from the old Honda two strokes I remember (had a '96 and an '03 I added a lot to to try and iron out the bugs).

You are clearly not riding soft sand tracks if there is no difference 125-450f. Small bikes are fun at hard pack vet track for sure.

Even in the UK where tracks are (generally) not sand but do often get prepped quite deep, you can see, even from the side of the track, that the track is sapping the power from the small bores like you say.

I just took the OP's post with a pinch of salt and assumed decent track conditions. You're right, but I think fun is the main message 👍

I'm not a fan of the rut-o-cross slot car track stuff personally, mostly because I suck in it, so I'll just take my tiddler somewhere old school and live the dream 😂

DDDB0D4D-7AB3-4C53-AFE5-6AC30FE393A8I’ll never sell this thing. Some PC porting and headwork, PC pipe with some cutting and lengthening done for the porting, tumbled trans, etc. Been my main bike since 2016 and still feels tight and strong to this day with good maintenance. Raced MX with it and won a harescramble championship with it only putting on hand guards and a big tank. Pic is from yesterday after putting in some motos on my buddies MX track and then cutting in a mile of new trail behind it.

Yeah the 125,s r so fun getting a good flow going. Even with a few injuries you can still ride. Just stand more & let the bike do the work. A shorty would help get the excitement going quicker.  My regular wt is 172 only once I got above that in the last 25 yrs.  In 2 weeks out of the trk I got down to 164.   I can feel the difference. 02FEF55A-E5F2-4D0C-9A6F-2DA16FE7C657

Owning both I’d have to say the 150 is a little sketchier, I really prefer the 125 to ride all around honestly. On medium/hard pack my 150 loves to light up the rear tire because the Powerband is so short and punchy, where the 125 gives up a little bottom but seems to pull forever. Going to a 110 rear helped with my issue on the 150.

My 22 150 was absolutely dangerous stock after I got the jetting better it had okay bottom strong hit in the middle and then fell on its face then I had Twisted development do a complete motor build on it night and day difference pulls all the way from bottom strong crazy over rev totally rideable and super fast was able to drop the rear sprocket down a tooth to be able to Cary gears longer!!

My kid is a holeshot machine on his 22 KTM 125. It's got a little motor work (head/insert, pipe, Keihen) but nothing crazy. He is almost always in the top 5 on starts regardless of who's on the line. Technique, confidence, power-to-weight ratio, and yeah, these things RIP! Shot below is Albany MX a few weeks ago and that's Ashton Oudman on the #480, who's probably one of the fastest young Pros in the PNW. My boy is right there with him. Course, Ashton won by like 90 seconds but hey it was a killer start! Smile

Picked up a 22 KTM 125, with only slightly modified jetting from stock. Jesus this thing MOVES. Its every bit as fast as my YZ250F. Just a little more effort. Really fun and sounds sick. Its incredible.

I had a 2013 250SX and it was so fast it was ridiculous. Im not sure what it is but they’re nuts. My current YZ250 does not have the kind of bark that thing did.

Funny you mention the 250. We have 2 125sx (20 and 22) and a 21 250sx that a buddy owns. My boy Jacob (a few posts above) who rips on the 125 has tried out the 250 and said it was way, way too much bike for him. Like a 198 lbs bike at 50+ HP or something stupid. You really have to be good to ride it the way it should be ridden. I don't get anywhere near it. Gonna name it Christine maybe. It really does want to kill you.

I picked up a 22 150sx for a smoking deal. Switching it over to a Keihin 38 carb.

What is everyone running for a needle in these? Got an NECJ but it seemed a bit anemic in the mid-top so I ordered a Sudco CCL to try.
