Thinking about buying a 2006 YZ450F and I want to be able to get it passed as street legal. Put on the lighting kits and how hard is it going to be to get a tag? This will be in Georgia.

Anyone got any experience on this?

Here in Arizona it is very easy, I checked with the local DMV and got the regulations of what was needed.
Head light and tail light
Brake light switch
Horn
License plate holder with light
mirror,left only required
I ran it through inspection and was declared road worthy.
Baja designs has all the parts you will need, lighting coil etc.
I have converted a couple WR 450's and a KLX 450 which already has lights, very simple.
Your local dealer may also be able to shed some light as to what is required in Georgia
Good luck

Every state is different. Try supermotojunkies.com and see if they can help out.

I did it with my CRF450 but that was in Canada.

actually the MVD here in arizona will 'pass' anything with wheels, they dont care if its actually legal or not, thats up to the cops. The mvd doesnt guarantee no tickets, they just get there money from you. It's up to you to be compliant with ever-changing laws. I never stop for cops anyway, so I will ride my yz250 anywhere I feel like it. Otherwise I am respectful against noise and idiot riding, unless the cops are trying to stop me, then I will open her up and smoke 'em!

I should have said Tucson, I have been stopped but never ticketed for an unlawful bike just unlawful speeding.

Great topic.

As DMV software gets more sophisticated as time goes on, VINs will begin to flag themselves as off-road vehicles only.

In some jurisdictions, you will find that even though you can put the vehicle through all the D.O.T. hoops and get certifications of road-worthiness, the motor vehicle registry system will not accept your V.I.N. as anything but an off-highway vehicle.

In Canada, the province of Quebec is actually pulling the files on bikes that once met all the legal criteria to be road-worthy and denying new annual registrations.

The province I live in now has very high-end software that differentiates that off-road V.I.N. and even if the bike could pass a federal D.O.T. certification for street use, the system will not allow an off-road specific V.I.N. a street legal plate.

It will be interesting to see how this works all over this wackey continent, and around the world for that matter.

Some states will not allow a bike to be converted to street legal status at all.
I am happy I live in one that will.

The loophole that a friend of mine did was to do a custom build. This even happened in California. You are allowed one custom built bike in your lifetime. He went through this guy in San Jose. Ended up with a new VIN plate and everything.

The out of the way DMV offices help. There are many street legal WR450's here in town.

I'll check the local DMV and see what their rules are and see what I am in for.

Lots of guys do it here. They put basic street stuff on then take it to a car mechanic to certify it (they have no clue what to look for, nor do they care) and then it's of top the DMV for registration and Bobs yer uncle!

There is even a guy with a CR500 on the street.

The problem in California is less a DMV issue (although it can be at that stage) and more a CARB issue. They can/will be more diligent.

"As DMV software gets more sophisticated as time goes on, VINs will begin to flag themselves as off-road vehicles only. " This already happens. I believe the 8th digit is the key one. Example: 2010 YZ450f

For California generally:

My YZ smoker was already street titled in MD but in SC there is no yearly safety or emissions inspection. When I went in all needed is the title and proof of insurance.
