I enjoy riding two strokes, I enjoy riding four strokes, and I will enjoy riding electric bikes. Hell I destroyed my daughters' Razor moped because I got carried away. lol. Of course I have my preferences, but I feel sorry for anyone that allows the engine configuration to limit their joy on a dirt bike.
P.S. - How do people "deep throat over 2 strokes"?
Granted, 4-strokes are easier to ride and feel more modern, but there’s a lot of benefits to the 2-stroke mainly in cost snd weight.
I predict 10 pages
I enjoy riding them all too. Havent rode an electric bike since alta but excited to try the Varg when it comes. The deep throating reference is about people going crazy about them. Saying four strokes ruined the sport, four strokes took away the skill, all that nonsense you see.
never understood it so I made the post.

You do realize that stand up jetski is a SXR 160 4 stroke right? lol
Tool for the job. Just about everyone will turn lower lap times on a 450 riding mx, but people generally don't ride 2t's for the lowest mx lap time. If you did that, that's on you. And of course when it comes to gnarly tight trails, 2t's are king.
I'll explain it so even YOU can understand it!
Per the AMA goobers.....the two strokes are superior race machines.......see the AMA displacement rule.
I’m in the not a fan of them club. I grew up riding them and while fun once I got my first 250f in 04 I was like screw those hard to ride slow things. Only thing I liked about the two strokes is it really exaggerated skill differences. Once all my friends who weren’t very good got on them they all instantly closed the gap on me. I could run the same pace on either but just longer on the 4 stroke. They were all way faster on the 4. Momentum didn’t matter as much and the engine braking helped them. Mistakes didn’t cost them as much. So on that side of it I was a fan. I don’t believe in the whole 2-strokes made the sport more competitive bullshit. I got into the sport in 93. All I did was watch Mc and RC murder everyone on them for 12 years lmao. So save that.
Yeah Im not saying 2 strokes are shit. I just dont understand why everyone thinks theyre holy. plenty of people on here claiming we should go back to 2 strokes for pro racing which is the part I really dont understand
I think you missed the point.
2 stroke sound.
2 stroke smell.
Throttle wide open on a 125, working the clutch in deep loam.
Ain't nothing cooler!
Well I have only ridden a 4 stroke 1 or 2 times in the last 20 years, so I don’t really know what I’m missing. Just kinda like being the under dog because it gives me motivation to try harder. Always have had YZ250, until I rode my sons KX125 teaching him. I was amazed how much fun I had on the 125. Granted I am 43 and haven’t raced much in the last 15 years until I just bought a 23 YZ125. I love how light and maneuverable it is on the track. Later braking than the other bikes I’m riding against.
Per CC 2 strokes are more powerful than the equivalent 4 stroke.
Harder to ride is personal opinion. IMO 4 strokes are fat pigs but that's just me
More arm pump just means your out of shape.
As plenty have mentioned. Nobody in their sane minds thinks that two strokes are ”better” = faster.
BUT, the smell, the feeling, the sound makes them more fun to ride for a skilled rider.
but novice riders tend to love their 450’s when they can jump every jump on track with 1/4 of throttle..
Obviously lot of nostalgia in there for those of a certain riding generation and prior. I held off for a while myself, being in the moderately stubborn anti-4t crowd, but of course you love 'em after riding one for a bit.
And I do get really tired of the injuries in pro sx/mx and think it's bad for the sport. Changing tracks and bikes would help that a lot. You don't necessarily need to switch to a 2t, you just need less power by any medium. Ideally less bottom end as well, which 2t's have that covered, but you could do the same via 4t fi tuning. I don't care how it's done specifically, but I want less injuries.
People chimp out for two strokes because they're obsolete. It's basically vintage racing with modern manufacturing lol.
Before anyone gets upset, I ride a YZ250. i am slower on it. I like it. I ride for fun and I'm fast enough to get the job done when I race.
never thought I would say this but I actually learned something from this thread lol
2 stroke love comes from:
1.being the heritage of moto
2. Something different than 4 strokes
3. Depends on discipline of riding
4. Guys in better shape than myself
I tried a 450 last year. It was fine until I ruptured my ACL when I low sided in a rut. Up until that point I had won several races and moved up to 30+ Intermediate.
Then, I really started to think about how much fun I was actually having. I realized there was not a single moment on my CRF where I thought "wow this is so much fun!". In fact, it was pretty fucking boring. Or really a back and forth between boredom and hanging on for dear life.
I told a lot of people the following words when they asked me how different it was: "With my YZ I was always trying to go faster, but with my CRF I feel like I'm always trying to slow down." To me, there's nothing fun about being as smooth as possible to keep a bike underneath me. I'm sure the fact that I owned a Honda didn't help either. Either way, I'm not ashamed to admit that a 450 is too much bike for me. I do this for fun and a 450 ain't it.
I know where I belong. The red bike is gone:
A 125 will be alongside the YZ250 next year.
Pit Row
1984 CR500 produced 60.8hp.... in 84
2023 Y450f produces 54.4
2 strokes are not only more powerful, they produce more HP and always have. You'd have to be insane to comment before looking up statistics,
We can end the thread here....lol. Quads with cup holders....LMAO.....
I think I'll go for a ride on my Sherco 300 SE Factory now....
For me, it was nostalgia, one of my last bikes was a 2010 250 ktm two stroke.
When I started riding in 1977, mx was two strokes.
But I must admit after years of four strokes, the age mid 50,s and be out of shape. I found it hard work to keep pushing on an mx track, although in the bush it was light, easy and great fun.
That's a Kawasaki X2
you could build a 200 HP bike. Doesnt mean its better or that you would be better/faster on it.
If that 500 is so badass, why did they stop racing them? Oh cause they sucked lol
Touche.
I think it's funny that we're all pretending 450s are just fine for the average person. Even for the pros, they are just making the power more smooth/broad, not adding HP (except for the Suzuki). To me, it's the 500s all over again except we're stuck with them.
Only fools buy into the one is better than the other bs
Maybe you just suck at riding?
Depending on the reference point, we all suck all riding.
CC for CC they make more hp and more torque. No way around that.
Do you like higher maintenance costs and less power per CC? I bet you like 4 strokes.
