I'm tired of hearing all the whingers about the RMZ not having an e-start, once Suz goes e-start there will be no more kickstart fourstroke mxers, sad I think, please let us have at least one offering. Really, what differences are there between all the bikes now, you got to appreciate a brand that does not make a cookie-cutter bike.
My 2011 RMZ450 starts first kick, hot or cold (now I've worked-out the knack), I have artificial knees & hips, not a problem for me, although my CR500 did break one of my new knees.
I've seen many a KTM sitting on the side of the track, cranking & cranking trying to start their bike, all bikes can be harder to start with clutch drag from still being in gear.
Flame-suit on. ;-)
It's been 3yrs since I came back to riding after a long layoff. I've never had a problem with my e-start once and I can't say I remember any of the guys at the club I ride at having problems either. I'm sure they happen though. Rarely
Did you watch High Point?
Sad that a feature that is universally considered an advantaged is adopted by all the other manus?
You have a great point. There is something nostalgic about kicking a dirt bike to life early on a morning ride. Seems like each bike has its own technic and starting rituals. (That being said I will absolutely not miss the old YZF426's)!!!
I was one of the last hold outs among my friends to go full electric start. My KX450 is full on e-start but my off road bike is and will always be with a kick start!

I was one of the guys that had an E-start back in 06 with a WR450 that I converted to a YZ basically. Most guys talked crap about it having the button, my have times changed. Now I have a few newer gen RMZ's and those same dudes are chirping about the kick starter. Go figure.
I wish my Husky had a kick starter. My battery died during an enduro race and couldn’t get it running!
I hear ya, my '09 CRF450 was the joke of the party when it came time to start it, we all called it 'the exercise bike' :-)
25 years ago I had a business trip to Russia, Republic of Taterstan. People there still drove vehicles that you had to crank start. You know that thing you stick in the front of the engine and try to turn. Yeah, I'm sure there were happy to have old stuff too. Lol
Don’t crash or make the mistake.
Actually, it's "There is something nostalgic about kicking a 2-stroke to life".
Some of us still ride them!
Everytime first kick... you should call Kenny.
Kicks first try every time sounds a lot like wheelies in every gear these days
Kickstarts probably aren’t gonna be cool again until we catch a solar flare.
There's one on it's way!

My estart honda starts right up while hot and in gear.
If kenny was on an Estart bike last race he would not have gotten passed by 20 riders.
That's why I hang on to my '19 300xc. Last of the carb'd kickers with E start. I do like having my button when I stall or fall during enduros or xcountry races. For moto I can see going strictly with e-start. But offroad in the boonies and ravines give me the option! I think Rieju is the only offroad bike with both now.
I have a 60-year-old tractor that has one of those too. If I have a battery in it though it has estart as an option as well
Pit Row
I remember the arguments when estart came out……thats stupid, i dont need it, too much weight etc. they are all here still in the depths of vital. Once you have one, its hard to go back.
Same.... '19 Husky TX300. I never use the kick, but it's there and I like that.
As the senior (Oldest, not Hispanic) member here, I do wish bikes had both. To me the kick start version is better for MX and the Electric start for those trail rides where you are constantly stopping. Honestly, if you crash in an MX race at the amateur level, nothing is going to preserve your position for the Gold/Wood/Plastic. Whether I get last or next to last, well I have a full PR (ME!) team working to "replay" the race story to reflect positively on my performance. Heck, they are so good I typically do better if I don't even hit the gate! But his is all fun and games at this point in my career..........
Well that's when the quality of product was built to last. And I'll bet it still plows with the best of the new stuff. But would you build it that way today? Hell no. If you want nostalgia, but old. If you want to buy new, you want your product with the newest technologies. There probably was a time 3" of suspension was thought awesome. Do we want that again?
There’s always “one on the way”
has to happen first.
When one causes catastrophic consequences, people will claim they weren't warned!
The fact is yes the e-start is a key missing feature. But even if Suzuki put an e-start on the bike it’s still not being updated and updates are what people want regardless if it’s better or not.
I’ve been kicking my 08 CRF 490 Athena big bore for 15 years…many times I have thought, for the love of god, give me a magic button!!!…unfortunately, my wallet doesn’t talk to me so….
I was totally bummed for Kenny when I saw him kicking his bike in the middle of the track last week. On the other hand, I was thinking, yeah, Kenny and I are a lot alike.
Would have been sweet on a stall on the side of a hill. Right peg on the ground, left peg 2' from the ground. CR500.
You're getting off and trying to find a place. Oh, and bump start on the dirt? Ain't enough gears in it.
95% of people who buy bikes are weekend bashers who dont need a kick start.
If Suzuki adds E-start the same dudes that sucks down beer and brats like they are going out of style will bitch about the bike being too heavy. Suzuki could address the weight issue and the same dudes will still bitch that it took them too long to make the changes. That’s the reality of it.
Mine is a 18' Husky TE300. Last summer I took a buddy and his son to the Mountains in New Mexico. His KTM 350 battery went completely dead in the middle of nowhere. He had a Rekluse so not able to bump it, so I give him my battery and I just kick the rest of the ride. Bad day adverted!
Post a reply to: Kickstarters, just think about it for a sec.
