Tomac Injury Update?

Any word/update on tomac? I know he wanted to wait a month before making any decisions regarding his future so I was hoping we’d hear something by now. Looks like he’s enjoying life with his family right now so wouldn’t blame him if he decided to hang up his boots and spend more time with the fam, but still hoping he’ll make a come back and close out his career with another SX championship.

If he’s ready in time for 24 SX, he’ll be there.

That is a long recovery injury, so probably too soon to tell if he can make the gate at A1 even if he wants to.

But if he gets comfortable without racing being as big a part of life as it has been, enjoys time with his budding family, I think we don't see him again given the vibes the came out before this season, unless he gets a ridiculous money offer for a year more.  I expect pops can give him a good perspective on letting go if he's conflicted.

Judging by his wife's IG account, it looks like he looks healthy and is enjoying the time off - which could be a good thing.  I'm hopeful he will enjoy the time away with no pressure then decide he didn't want to go out like that, and then come back and race some SX only (doing SX + MX is too big of an ask IMHO).

I’d rather him come out for ‘24 outdoors instead of rushing recovery for sx. Personally would much rather watch him race outdoors one last time instead of sx.

I am betting he is done, too much good stuff to do where he is at than ride moto.  Plus what does he have to prove?  If he comes back and gets smoked by Jett, then he tarnishes his legacy.

I understand either way but I really hope he does 1 more season.

I don’t know… a torn Achilles is one of the worst and hardest to recover from. So I don’t think he’ll be back next year. Because not only does it have to get better, you have to go to physical therapy and rebuild your strength again.

He was getting close to retirement wasn’t he?

It would be a little surprising if he came back to racing.

But I hope he does.

I have heard multiple times that it isn't as bad as they thought, idk what that mean recovery wise. I also heard the earliest he could get on the bike is november 1st. I think that he should come out for outdoors and do SX in 25 is he wants to because going for mx will give him more recovery time.

As a fan, I'd love an update too.  But also completely understand if we don't hear for months from the Tomac camp.

For most healthy normal athletic adults, it's 6 months or more after surgery before even attempting any sort of ballistic exercise.... let alone elite level training.

I've gone through the surgery, and it was harder and longer to come back from than any broken bone... even back surgery was faster and easier to recover from.  It was a year before I was running without worry and anywhere near my pre surgery shape.

Elite professional athletes with the time, money, drive, and access to top health care can certainly shorten that period IF they choose to do so. It's still a HERCULEAN task and commitment.   But we would have to ask, why would Eli at this point in his career rush a comeback, when he doesn't have too?

Again, as a fan, I really hope we see him race at the top level again.  But in addition to the actual physical recovery, he and his family will have to go through the tough process of deciding if it's even worth it as well as assess his recovery progress.   Eli Tomac already has his place in history cemented with a Hall of Fame career, one of the greats.

I suspect it is going to be some time before Eli and his family really know themselves the answers to questions we all have as fans, let alone share them with us the public.  No expert or pro, just my opinion.

Every Fan would want to watch him race outdoors more then Supercross. Every sponsor would rather him race Supercross then outdoors.

i dont think he has anything to lose legacy-wise. if he gets stomped he has the achilles excuse and time off the bike, and if he wins.... woah.

I agree. He made his mark in the sport and I wouldn't be surprised if he goes the route like Charlie Mullins did post-race life and do something in the mountain bike sector.

And SX is the least physically taxing of the two series with respect to physical preparation.  With some time off, it will give him a taste of what retirement is like.  So either he will like it and go with it, or it might give him a chance to see if he still has the itch like Dungey, and allow him to make a decision without any pressure.  Sucks that he has the injury for absolute certain, yet at the same time there could be a silver lining.

He's done son..  Wish it wasn't that way,, and I could be completely wrong.  But what's to gain and also why?  I'm with FTE, gets comfortable with the fam/not racing.  Doesn't need the money.  Shoot by the time he can train, it's already to late to realistically be a competitor of Sexton/Jett/Coop etc.  I hope he calls it a career.  He gave us one of the best seasons to ever watch.  He also gave us reasons to not always believe what is expected, will happen.  So maybe he'll be back.  Either way I hope he's happy, healthy, and healing well.

I hope you're wrong, purely as I selfishly want to watch him race some more, but I think you guys hit the nail on the head and ultimately he's gotta do whatever is best for him 👍

He had an incredible career and accomplished everything he possibly could in our sport (multiple times).  Why would he want to come back next year to get smoked by Jett like everyone else will?  It would have been great if he closed out his career with a championship, but it just didn’t work out that way.

I sure hope I’m wrong.

He's already walking around with no boot on, that's gotta be a good sign.
