Got this stupid old bike and I don't know what to do with it, sell it or been thinking about entering a vintage race against a bunch of other old farts, but I'm so spoiled with these new electric start dirt bikes that I don't even feel like kicking this old girl over anymore and she's kind of dangerous for an elderly person whose old bones might not be able to handle warp speed, so I think I would rather sit, look at it and drink a beer in the Man Cave.   I'm looking for a skid plate and frame guards for a 1987 Honda CR500, just in case I come up short on a triple Smile   Anybody know a manufacturer that makes that kind of stuff I'm looking for.    This is my actual Big Red Machine, never been restored and has about 20 hours total on it and don't know what it's worth, just feels like a waste sitting there.

Answer to this question is always race. You'll never look back with fondness on a sell you did.

500’s sell for good money. A 1987 CR 500 with 20 hours will sell for north of 10K.
I would most likely use eBay with a reserve or one of the bigger LV auctions. There you might see the price creep up towards the 20K range due to the low, low hours.

You are going to be sorry for selling it. I have so much fun racing vintage. Way more fun on my 99 kx125 than my modern 450.

Just my 2 cents.

I had a 1979 Honda CR250R Elsinore back in the day and if I had a penny for every time I've said I wished I hadn't sold it, I'd be rich.  I'm probably going to hold on to this 500, because it is really cool and I love the smell of that 2 stroke oil.  I think I'm gonna go to one of these vintage bike races, they sound like a lot of fun.

WHAT HE SAID!!!

do NOT sell that B E A - utiful machine or you will hate yourself till the day you die! Go find a vintage series and give it a whirl…I had more fun on my $1700 1983 YZ490 than my last 4-450’s combined!

Your MINT CR500 reminds me that of the old joke “Looking for husband that can cook & do laundry, must have his own dirt bike…send pics of dirt bike” 😝 🤪

and seriously…DONT sell that bike… drain the gas & carb, set it in the house and just look at it…DONT SELL IT…EVER!!! 😎 👍❗️

Now hang on, whatta ya think I'm stupid or something, I see how you Aussies roll, if that's $500 Australian dollars, that's like $350 US and it will cost more than that to ship it to ya.   I heard 500cc 2-stroke racing is a pretty big deal down under though.

Holy shit! that's unreal.  So! I just went out and started up the 500, forgot how much of a bitch they can be if you don't do it right.  I've gotten comfy on my KTM 350 XCF and CRF450R and those nice gripper seats they come with, well! I guess gripper seats were for Wussies back in the day and I decide to take a few laps around the neighborhood, I give it a little twist of the throttle and my Ass damn slid off the seat I had just cleaned with Armorall and onto the rear fender, which in turn makes you grab more throttle trying to hold on, luckily I had my fingers on the clutch.  Kind of crazy when you haven't ridden a big bore 500 2-stroke for awhile and forget how violent the hit can be compared to a 4 stroke.   I almost decided to put a for sale sign and sell it right there and add Injury forces sale to the comments.   Guess if I'm going to keep it, I'm putting a gutz gripper seat on it.

Dude, don't listen to these guys because they don't know what they are talking about. The bike is worth about $2k tops since the market for old bikes has falling flat. Since I'm a really nice guy and feeling generous I'll Venmo you $3k for it and take care of shipping. It'll make you feel good about your sell knowing you got top price. Whistling.....in all honesty you have an unreplaceable piece there and if nothing else, roll it into a corner just to look at it.

I say you take BBA up on his offer. Vintage racing is no fun. No pressure, riders laughing while riding. Often the turns are difficult as everybody is politely not block passing. There will be a few future Factory racers out there. But they chill after a  few incidents. Reality is Monday morning you can go to the office (do folks really do that anymore?) and say something like this. I went to an AHRMA national and won! There were over 750 riders there! What I may omit is the obscure class I rode and the fact that I was the only one in the class. Being old one tends to forget a few of those minor details!

I have had hundreds of bikes and no of the "profits" from them reside in my paltry bank account. But I still recall several I wish I could get back!

It seems to.me that you answered your own question.

Actually, I haven't owned it, since 1987, just purchased it about 8 years ago from a guy who was the original owner and barely used it, had the original tires that were all hard and cracked, so I replaced those, put a new DID chain on it,  clutch pull was brutal so I installed a hydraulic clutch that was much better, replaced the original plastics with aftermarket to keep them nice and then did some track days.  What's amazing about this bike is for a 36 year old bike, the suspension is actually quite nice and comfortable, but MAN! what an engine.

If you want the ultimate in

raw 2 stroke hp, ride a 1986 KX500. It is the gold standard for violent acceleration.

Get Eric Gorr to do a low compresion cylinder and head set up, we did that for our supermoto CR500 and it was awesome, easy to ride and made it all usable.

I tried to blow up the pic of it as much as possible but that bike was not making any sense to me from what I could see. Thanks for the info.

The pipes aren't the problem.

It's the kick starter when you do it wrong.

Like showing off for your buddies and try starting it in hiking boots.

We were riding at my friend's family ranch, and a friend of his older brother kept asking to ride it. I let him try finally. He had on Converse High Tops.

Half assed kick, and I had no idea he was so flexible. I think he my have kicked him self in the back of the head.

His shoe sole flew off like a wounded mallard.

Guess he decided to not ride it that day.

It was an 84, not an 87, but I'm sure they were similar enough.
