How stock is "stock"?

Watching this, it looks like the stock 250F's definitely don't have a disadvantage against the stock 250T - is this the case in all Loretta's "stock" classes where they run together, even the A's? This is the only Loretta's I've watched (beside old Barcia and Malcolm Bubba vids), so I'm curious?

I think Stock means just stock engine, not suspension or anything

i tought there is only few parts that you can change, like handlebars and gearing. Maybe even triple clamps, but i don't know better. Smile

At Loretta's, stock means stock. I've known guys that buy a new bike before they go so they're sure to not get protested.

Thanks, Referee Scott.
Reading theses 'expert's' opinions on what is stock for LL, I was like WTF?

That is exactly what won. The winning bike was purchased new two weeks prior to the race. The suspension revalved and springs changed. Michael Leib weighs 130 lbs. He also ran a Factory Connection shock link, Tag T-2 bars and oversize bar clamps, 53 tooth rear sprocket, changed the leak pilot and main jets, ran oxygenated fuel. To give you an idea of how petty it gets at the Regional Michael had a Cycra vented front fender on his bike and was protested!

The two stokes certainly have an advantage but in my opinion what happens at Loretta's is that the kids getting support are more likely to be better riders and they must ride the four stroke 250F. As a test Michael Leib, who won the 250B Stk class, rode a bone stock Yamaha YZ250 at Perris for Dirt Bike magazine. Mind you it was the first time he rode a two stroke 250. He was faster on the 2T than his modified CRF250....... quite an eye opener.

Transworld also ran a comparison of 2T and 4T 250 Yamahas with Jason Lawrence last year. He was faster on, and preferred, the 2T.

Both were stock. I believe JLaw said if he had the choice of the 2 he would take YZ250 over the 250F but he would choose his race bike over the YZ250.

I'm surprised they allow you to change the shock linkage.

I remember way back when stock was STOCK. Back in my mini bike days at lorettas one year you had to have the stock colored grips that came on the bikes from the factory. You could not have custom made shroud graphics either.

Not possible, 2 strokes are dinosaurs and almost dead.

It’s a travesty the way the AMA has treated the 2 strokes the last few years.

I mean this with utmost respect, but I wouldn't call it an eye opener. I'd hope most guys would be faster on a 250 over a 250F. Especially outdoors.

Why? Michael helped us out on an RM-Z450 test a couple years ago, and I believe that was his first time on a 450.

I dunno, a kid that won the 250B stock class has probably been around and riding bikes for years and that is his first time on a 250? Just seems he would have ridden one somewhere some time. What kind of test were you doing with a first time rider?

I remember when I rde 80s at LL's Stock was stock! That meant no internal valve changes on the shock forks or nothing. You sould change the spring rate but nothing else.

Wasn't someone DQed for having foam between the shifter and the case? Pretty sure I heard that somewhere.

True.... Michael had never ridden a 450 before ridding the RMZ 450 for Vital and had not been on a 250 2 stroke before that day at Perris. Not hard to believe IMO...... he has been riding and racing for many years and being smaller in size I being his dad did not allow it nor have those bikes been readily available. He spent his 14, 15 and 16 years riding CR85, Supermini, CRF150R and CR125.

Jeez, you're no fun......

I find it amusing that the 4 stroke fantics keep saying how good the 4 bangers are, yet, every time we bring up "CC for CC" racing they have some excuse as to why their 250f's can't keep up.

Well it seems they obviously can keep up, and more.

Yes, Austin Stroupe was protested by Nico Izzi for having foam added to the frame/brake lever.

haha, I hope you're not referring to me as a 4 stroke fantic... whatever that is?

I'm not advocating either 2 or 4 strokes. I'm saying in this video they do not seem to be struggling, and the extra power doesn't seem to make a difference. So I'm asking if this is across the board at Loretta's - i.e. How do they fare in the stock A classes, or is this race just a fluke?

Cool. So he had ridden all kinds of 2T's before jumping on a 250. Got it. I just assumed he had friends that rode a 250T or you had a 250T that he had ridden before. IMO it is hard to believe that a kid that has raced and been around racers and tracks that much hasn't EVER been on one but hey if you say so I will go with it. Even if you told most kids not to ride one and someone had one he would probably find a way to ride it. So did he race a 250T this year?

I am still wondering what kind of test do you do with a kid that has never ridden a 450? What type of feedback would you get, unless it was a "1st ride for a kid on a 450" type thing.

You might be suprised to know that most teenagers have very little time if any on 2 strokes after moving to big bikes..
