Sorry about your motor
not that it matters but I was curious what gas/octane you were running? What map do you run the most? I was going to go to 90 hours on my 1st piston but maybe I will swap it at 40 for for the 1st one.
98-octane pump (98 Ron, 87 Mon, dont know if that is different in EU/US) and Motorex CrossPower 10/50w with Keefer Exciting connect map. Maybe it was pin coating or piston problem, this was first bikes in EU and most hours here so far. As im vet rider never had problems before 80 hours.
Just picked mine up! The Suzuki 250 AF is down for some more motor work at the moment and I don't want to hammer it all the time. Pretty excited to start this build!
Congrats!!! And I just realized seeing your pics that for this year the standard YZ450 AND the Monster edition both had blue wheels!!? (Seemed like in years past the Monster Edition had black wheels? 🤔)
I’m working on getting mine setup now and have it all apart greasing linkage, steering bearings etc!
Have fun on that beast! 😎 👍❗️
Congrats!! You have my dream setup (truck and bike)!!

I read through the last 15 pages hoping to read some comparisons from people who switched from a newer KX450. I took 4 years off but am getting back into riding and am currently riding my 2013 KX450F. Over the last few years I've been saying that my next bike would be a YZ450f but I have a lead on 2023 KX450 for under $7k OTD so I'm weighing if the new YZ is several grand better given that I'm 50 and just a weekend warrior. In separate threads, I've read comments about how light and nimble the newer KX450s are (vs my 10 year old bike) and am curious how the YZ and KX compare in that department. No doubt the YZ has the better engine, I like not having to buy a tuner and have always liked KYB but whether I go YZ or KX, I'll have the works done on the suspension so I'm not sure how much worse the Showa forks would be. I'd never miss the few grand out of my wallet but I'm a frugal bastard so trying to figure out if the YZ is nearly 50% better for the nearly 50% premium. Thanks!
I have a 23 yz450 n have ridden the 23 kx 450, I think the kx is an excellent bike and with the deep discounts it’s appealing, the main reason I wouldn’t buy the kx is it’s coming out with a new model in 24 witch is really gonna devalue the 23 kx. I love my yz 450 but if u bought a 23 kx for 7 k n put 3 k into you would have a bad ass perfect bike! I choose the yz for the reliability and awesome kyb suspension 🤙
I had a 2015 YZ450F (after stretching two different 2009 YZ450’s through the first generation “backward engine” YZ’s) and was planning to buy another YZ after deciding a 350 just wasn’t the bike for me. When Kawasaki unveiled the “all new” 450 in 2019, I sold the KTM & bought the new KX after Yamaha released what was essentially the same bike as before.
The KX is a fabulous machine and I really REALLY liked it! It may have not been the best at any one thing, but it didn’t do anything bad either! Some will find fault with it still using the old school “coupler” instead of programmable map etc, but I had the GYTR tuner for my 2015 YZ and once l had it set up, I never really used the tuner after that! The KX is a GREAT bike, it is easy to adjust to your setup preferences and I personally wouldn’t hesitate to buy the 22-23 model as they made several small improvements to the first generation 19-20-21.
In full disclosure…I was actually planning to buy another KX when I dumb luck stumbled into the 2023 YZ deal and grabbed that opportunity! If Sehorn Yamaha had NOT called me on THE afternoon that they did, I would have a KX in my garage right now! I would have been bummed to miss out on the brand new YZ deal, but I would NOT be disappointed at having another KX!
If you can get a great deal on a KX right now, my experience with them would say GO FOR IT!
My only caveat would be IF you get a new bike every year, maybe wait for the 2024 as Kawasaki is rumored to be developing an all new KX for 24…If you tend to keep your bikes for a few years, (and it appears that you do!😆) I’d say take advantage of the good pricing on the 2023’s, dial it in for you and enjoy the crap out of it!
Kawasaki is an excellent platform and a fast fun reliable bike to ride! Good luck! 😎 👍❗️
Thanks! Yeah, I have so many hobbies that I cycle through and get obsessed about (putting other ones on the shelf for months or years), so I've never felt the need to upgrade MX bikes regularly. My 2013 still has a lot of life in it (since I hardly rode for the past 7 years after getting my ankle fused) and my main reasons for even thinking of getting a new bike are that I imagine a newer bike would feel a lot more light/nimble, I'd like to turn my 2013 into a snowbike and I'd really need to spend $1000-1500 if I wasn't going to replace it soon as the wheels/tires/brakes/chain, etc are pretty clapped out. I broke a spoke last weekend and started looking at new wheels and other items but pretty much all of those items are going to be removed when I turn it into a snowbike so I'm better off getting a new bike now vs sinking a bunch in this bike. These YZs look sweet though so not an easy decision.
I almost bought a new KX after the delays in getting my new YZ. I have been on Yamahas since ‘03 so moving to a Kawi would have been a big deal, but those bikes are really good. I’ve ridden a few and am always impressed. I waited and I’m happy I did, but I don’t know if you could go wrong either way.
Get the kx if you can get it for 7k. You’ll have some extra $$ to turn your other bike into a snow bike.
I've heard from a few buddies that have the '23 YZ450F that the suspension starts out really stiff. One said it got way better after about 10 hours, no re-valve, just clicker adjustments. The two other guys sent the suspension out for re-valve, said it was way worth the $ spent. All guys are vet riders about my speed and weight.
My question to y'all that have some hours on your stock suspension, is it getting better?
Sorry if this has been asked, didn't want to re-read the entire 40+ pages. Thanks
I just got done giving a deposit and will pick it up tomorrow. Out the door for $6897. Damn, I want a YZ450 but I just couldn't pass up that price so maybe my next bike will be blue.
Pit Row
The fitment was a little off for mine, the hole on the bottom didn't quite line up and there's a little gap between the skid plate and the bottom rails on the left side. It's very sturdy and good looking though.
Fork on my 23 YZ 450 was soft. Ended up being 40cc low on fork oil from stock spec.
Damn Dude! That is a KILLER deal and you will NOT regret it! (Seems silly to say in a YZ thread, but oh well🤪)
I was actually on my way to look at a 2022 KX450 with less than 8 hours on it and NICE setup/accessories etc from a fellow Vital member (I still feel bad about NOT buying his bike too, it was MINT!) but I am about to turn 58, always been a Yamaha guy and just dunno how many more new bikes I might have in my future!? (Hoping I’m still riding moto & wanting a new bike at 70 but who can really say?! 😂)
AND…consider this…I wrote a $9900.00 check a week ago Friday and got a brand new YZ in the garage now! You’re gonna write a check tomorrow for $3000.00 LESS and you’re gonna have a brand new KX in the garage!!! BOTH bikes are fast capable moto tools and debating which is better for whatever reason is just a silly waste of time!
You got $3k in the bank toward race fees, parts/accessories for the new bike (or hell, maybe a cool trip with the significant other?) regardless how you decide to use the 3K…you’re WINNING Bud!
Congrats my man! Enjoy that killer new scooter! 😎 👍❗️
Mine gets better for sure as the hours - but still super nervous when off throttle or throttle chop. I would like to figure this out. (Vet A-
Ultimately - this is a bike for fast kids i think - the 22 was more of a vet bike. This years likes to be ridden hard and fast and perahps isn't a great VET or MASTERS bike.
I actually rode one yesterday for a few laps. It had 6 hours on it and the guy was same size and speed so I think the set up was on point. We both are vet experts. He had a mellower map and a fmf slip on installed. He said stock it was almost to much.sag was 102/forks at 5mm.
My thought was, great motor, forks were soft and dove (could be oil height or set up). Front end almost felt like it floats, I can see how some think it’s nervous compared to the old chassis which I had. Overall a pretty good bike if it can get set up right.
Kawi is good out of the box with springs for you weight. I think most, myself included can hop on the Kawi and within a lap or two feel like you’ve been riding it for months. They are great vet bikes that will now have horrible resale due to rebates and the new 24 coming out. Like others have said, if you keep your bike and put plenty of time on them it’s hard to beat the Kawi if you can pick one up cheap.
just my two cents
Aaaah you’re making’ me feel nervous hearing that!
that is desperately clinging to his youth! Ha 🤪
I’m definitely NOT nor have I ever been a “fast kid”! More of a worn out old guy (Vet
I’ve had YZ thumpers all the way back to the 1998 YZ 400 (with 1 or 2 other colors sprinkled in over the years!) and the one of the biggest things I’ve always loved about my YZ’s was their stability! (And legendary reliability-so the blown up piston pic above is a bummer to see too!) My last YZ was a 2015 and I loved that it was so dependable & predictable! I’ve ridden a friends 2021 YZ450 and it is very reminiscent of my earlier YZ’s and I was sure hoping the 23 will be more of the same!
I have the new 23 on the work-stand going through it now, servicing linkage/steering bearing’s back grounds etc and hoping to ride it for first time this weekend! Fingers crossed I won’t have a $9900 regret! 😳 🤞❗️
EDIT : What sag # would you guys recommend starting out at…100, 02, 05mm or other? And where are you guys running your forks in the clamps? Flush, 2mm, 5mm or other?
Agreed 100%. From the moment I got it the biggest take away for me was that this was a RACE bike, while the last gen felt more vet friendly and was way more comfortable out off the box. When I'd ride it hard and aggressive, it responded really well. When I'd try and be a little lazy, it would feel stiff and cumbersome. I'm just now getting settled into mine at ~25 hours. My bike has seen just about every clicker, sag, and fork height setting you could imagine since I've had it. I've tried a couple gearing options as well. I finally went back to a (mostly) stock setting about 5 hours ago and just decided to ride it as is and deal with what it does well and what it doesn't do well and the last couple days at the track have been really good. It's a great bike, but it does seem to take longer to break in and is far more finicky to get set up.
Stock springs ?? what sag and fork height did u end at ?
Anyone got a parts list at the ready for oem clutch? Fibers and steels?
Other other reports on the rekluse?
Stock springs. I’m 175lbs and ended up at ~3mm up on the forks and 103mm sag.
Either it took this long to break in and get through the harshness of the chassis/suspension, or I fruitlessly chased my tail for 20+ hours in search of a magic setting 🤷♂️
I still might prefer the transmission of my ‘21 but I’m starting to get used to the tall 2nd.
The new bike is a more precise handling machine. It doesn’t do as well at hiding bad technique as the last gen did, but it rewards good technique in a more apparent way and seems to keep me motivated to stay precise as well. I’m pretty stoked on it lately 👍
I have two rides in the rekluse plates. It wasn’t a huge improvement like it was on my kx450. I couldn’t feel like it was an upgrade on the Yamaha. I have the adjustment on the third setting which my plate stack called for. Maybe I could go to 2 to get more bite but it doesn’t seem so, I’d have to ask rekluse.
Gormleyflyer: the '23 YZ is just as stable and planted as the '22; you just have to spend a lil more time to set up correctly:
Fork Height +3-4mm, Sag 105, replace 120 rear tire with a 110, try the softer less aggressive map if stock aggressive map is too barky in low end. I replaced stock sprockets 13-49 with 14-52, this is the magic sprocket setting, smooth strong powerband from low to high. Suspension def gets softer with 20+ hours. My suspension guy revalved the Forks with the '22 valving settings, increased stock fork oil height from 270 to 300. The bike is very stable, turns great, unbelievable power, and suspension is perfect.
Hopefully, some of this works for you.
