The main reason I stopped reading MXA is their mean streak with riders. They've skewered almost every rider in history at one point or another, and it's always the same wheeze - "he doesn't try hard enough". I actually shreaded a MXA with a lawnmower one time when they made the smartass remark about Robbie Reynard that he only cared about racing at Southwick, he was stupid for letting his dad help with his engine and "apparently Robbie's mother didn't have time to do his suspension." What a bunch of pissants. They forgot to mention that Reynard could hardly put on his jersey that year because his shoulder was so bad.
Disciples of Jody Weisel should think twice before they critique a rider's level of effort.
First off ,the MXA staff have explained( many times) why,on occasion, there are no bylines on a particular article. If you research this ,you can find the answer.
2.) MXA had no problem calling out the AMA , and in particular Steve Whitelock ,on what most felt were legitimate problems with the way the Nationals were run, and they most certainly DID offer suggestions on what they felt would be improvements, most of which have been implemented, coincindentally.
3.) Professional MX tracks should on be groomed to perfection only once ,before any racing starts. The only other time is to repair a dangerous section and maybe the start area. That part even most of the racers agree on.
4.)Some of your observations are based on comments that are taken out of context. ex.) Jody has never said that "all" riders are overpaid, but he has suggested that people who "race" for a living should put forth the effort to actually win a race now and then. Finishing inside the top 10 seems to be satisfactory for some guys that are being paid 7 figures. Another one- Jody said on more than one occasion that he would much rather BE racing than WATCH racing. And that entire staff races multiple times per week. That doesn't mean that they don't go to the SX or Nationals, I have personally seen at least one MXA staffer at every AMA Pro race I've attended during the last 5 years (about 50)
4.)Although I do not recall MXA ever stating that they would like to banish 18 wheel rigs in favor of a plethora of box vans, but does it make sense to have 2 guys running out of the 2 million dollar rig ? or in Yamaha's case last year, no one ?Look where that logic put them. Now no factory Yamaha team ,just satellite/support teams. You will see the the other OEM's follow suit shortly. So maybe having a more cost-effective "pit presence" isn't so old school.
5.) Also, someone (not you ,Born Lil Slow) questioned if Jody truly was ever a Pro. Jody WAS a factory Hodaka rider back in the 70's , with Tommy Croft, I believe
So anyway, in conclusion, is MXA a perfect publication ? No ,far from it, however, these guys drink it ,eat it , sleep it ,dream it and live it as passionately now as they did 35 years ago, and report it as they see it. And for that , I applaud them.
And at some of the Supercenters, no MX magazines at all.
Pit Row
wow, find a sport where the top ten wins occasionally. They are humans, just because a team wants to pay them a lot of money, doesn´t mean they don´t out down the work. Jody seems to think everyone on a pro level can win, which makes me questiion why he was never a champ. After all he rode for a factory team. Didn´t he put down the work either?
Do Magoo and Hannah count?.... :0)
1.) You just, literally, said exactly what I said, called it in accurate, then tried to justify MXA's stance on not putting in a byline. So how was I inaccurate?
2.) You're going to have to help me here. You type a response pointing out what I said as incorrect by saying almost exactly what I said. Show me where I said MXA didnt gripe about the AMA or Whitlock. They did. What did they offer as printed in thier publication? It has consistently been "take things back to the way they were" and things were NOT great back then! The current MXA push is for a grand national champ. Ok. I dont think its a bad idea... go look at first post in this thread, now explain to us how MXA is qualified to handle ANYTHING when they cant even add 2 numbers together correctly? Translation, its griping for the sake of griping. No actual effort expended to do it factually. They think, lets beliggerently gripe because we know what people need and noone but us is qualified to make that decision.... and cant even support thier own cause correctly by adding 2 numbers together.
3.) im not sure what you are trying to point out but its obvious sarcasm is lost on you. You state I am incorrect when I pointed out that MXA was one of the first to complain and grief about tracks breaking down due to the 450f's. Then when they go into "way back when mode" a tough, brutal, broken down track was what real mean raced on. I am betting you still dont catch the irony. Here, I will try 1 more. REAL men back in the day raced 500cc 2 strokes according to MXA, everyone today is a non-trying, over paid pussy because they race 450f's that are faster then 500cc 2 strokes. 450cc vs 500cc do you get it now? Anyone today, anything today, is an obscene disgrace to MX, but back in the day real men rode on the exact same things and are gods... open class motorcycles on rough and brutal tracks...... im betting you still dont get it.
4.) Since you are a 35 year reader of MXA, I would like to call your attention to the November 2009 issue and Jody's Box, particulary the next to last paragraph. He clearly states riders, plural. hell, the beginning of the paragraph confirms my statement of MXA thinks everything should go back to the way it was!!! So, you think they are right that these guys risking life and limb should go back to how things where and do it for an obscenely low money amount. Interesting. Then, you say I am incorrect about my statement in retort to Jody's column about box van vs semis. Again, goto the issue in question and then lets get Matthes in here. Ask him about box vans, mechanics literally driving 1800 miles in 3 days, which is illegal, dangerous, and irresponsible, to then have to totally rebuild the bike and put in 2 18 hour days at a nat. The mechanics life got easier, and thats wrong according to Jody. Also, what kind of rig are you buying for 2 million!?! Tractors to pull the trailor, about 500~700k. Trailor maxed out, about 300k. But you get use of that setup for how many years? Vs box vans that are used up after 1 year, then temper all of that with presentation that Basher demands all spectators should be allowed in to see. Along that line, spectators should WANT to see 30 box vans lined up looking like a Rider convention, not a rig with canopy, professional workspace, appearance, and quality image and presense. Keep everything for just the hardcore fans, you get a sport that doesnt grow, fact. Also, the name of the magazine is MotoCross Action... again you point out I am correct when you try to point out I am wrong! Your words... "Jody said on more than one occasion that he would much rather BE racing than WATCH racing". Then who the hell is he to offer any insight on how to improve things if he obviously doesnt care to watch? 1980 called, you COULDNT watch a race unless you where there live... yes, we should go back to that. Show me 1 STAFFER, not contributor, STAFFER of MXA that is at every race for the last 15 years.Page 9 is the list of MXA staffer. Who is it?
5.) Your statement, to me, is very telling. He WAS a pro rider.... back in the 70's. this is 2010, FORTY, 40... 4...0... years later, Jody is stuck back in quote "the romance" of the sport, and thats a quote from Jody's Box nov 09 issue... As I pointed out, and you claim I am incorrect about, the nostalgia of the sport.
I will throw in a 6.)
They are passoinate... 35 years passionate... about seeing the sport, as they see it, based on nostaglia from 35 years ago. They dont remember or acknowledge the bad parts, which where major. They just remember the carefree life "way back when" when THEY were racers chasing the dream, making NO money to do it, living like a hobo, and risking life and limb for no return, and want it that way today. No insight on how to get things better, just put it back to how it was for me because that is what its all about! Bullshit! According to Jody, riders should do things for the love of it and not as a career. No insight on how to make the sport grow and make it better for all involved, riders, mechanics, industry, or fans! Are you really going to sit there and say things today arent better for you the spectator and fan? Are you really going to say that a mechanic NOT having to work 18 hours days for months without pause for little or no money is a bad thing?
MXA and their articles, reflect exactly who they are.... people every one of us knows. Old men that sit around and explain how bad things are now because back in their day, they walked uphill, both ways, in a snow storm, and they were thankful to do it and everyone today is horrible because they have enough sense to figure out how to ride instead of walk, and turn on the damn heat so the snow doesnt freeze them and be happy. And they are worthless punks for doing it right?
or is it hes bitter about being a pro in a time when it meant squat and he didnt make dick-all for money when he was doing it so everyone now is worthless?
guys, things change and progress. The riders are in better shape overall today as a group, they are able to compete longer, they can make a living and not eat ravioli out of a hub cap.... and we should stop all of that to fix our sport.... fix it so everyone gets what jody got for risking his life.... nothing but bitterness and resentment for the next generation of racer if they dare to do it differently.
Too damn funny.................
2) Yes they have ripped on the AMA for years and rightfully so. Also they said on every occasion I can think of that Steve Whitelock is a good guy and his hands were tied. I think you are a little too hung up on the mathematical or print error. I am sure a retraction will be in the next issue with the appropriate numbers. Provided someone points it out to them. Also, they love the old days but are the first ones to tell you that it was not all peaches and cream. SOME of the old ways they would like to see come back but not all. If you have read MXA and actually paid attention instead of focusing on the negative you would know this.
3) MXA have stated repeatedly the irony in the fact that 450's are really the open class that everyone complained about the bikes being too powerful for years about. Their "real men" comments have more to do with 45 min motos and rough tracks. Again if you paid attention you would know this.
4) Are we to assume you are a complete moron and everything you post is wrong because you don't know how much a semi truck costs? "Tractors to pull the trailor, about 500~700k. " Those are pretty much standard trucks. You can purchase them with big power and all of the ammenities for about $160,000 to &175,000 depending on the brand. You can buy a decked out truck with an extra large sleeper birth on it (say 156" as opposed to the standard 73" to 80") for about $250,000.
5) Jody and the rest of the crew are not stuck in the "romance" of the past. They remember the old days fondly but are quick to point out that they don't want to go back. That they have been around since the beginning makes them uniquely qualified to give perspective about the whole gammut of our sport.
6) Well I think it's been addressed already.
The point is that MXA is just a magazine produced by humans who make mistakes and have opinions. If those opinions differ from yours that's okay. They differ from mine on occasion too. Pull your head out of your vagina and quit yer whining.
BTW I like racer x for the personalities and race reports and MXA for the tests and the perspective articles and subscribe to both. I also like the fact that MXA has the coffee table policy. I sometimes pull pictures out of my racer x before giving it to my boys (4 and 2) but I can hand them the MXA the way it is.
They're like the Simon Cowell of MX.
Post a reply to: MXA, I just can’t take it anymore…….
