If you walk in from outside and there's no breeze going in with you,  it's balanced and not bringing in fresh air.

That's probably great for football, but it sucks for motorcycle races.

It was plenty chilly in there during practice, which I get because they want it comfortable for when the crowd showed up.

My guess is the roof adjustment keeps the air balanced so that you aren't being sucked in, or blown out.

I'm not sure what pollen had to do with it or not, but they weren't exchanging air, it seemed to be recirculating.

Okay, I got an official diagnosis:

BILATERAL ACUTE CHEMICAL CONJUNCTIVITIS with SUBCONJUNCTIVAL HEMORRHAGE in both eyes.

My niece had the same diagnosis from a completely different doctor than I and in a completely different state.

I got this after the event on Sunday morning  and it helped my eyes immensely. I couldn’t fall asleep on Saturday because my eyes were so irritated. My congestion went away fairly quickly, but my eyes were still red as of yesterday but are much better today. That solution worked very well for me.

So, 6 pages in, numerous individuals with the same symptoms, actual doctor diagnoses… where do we go from here?

my gf and i were there as well section 115 right at the first corner and remember saying the race gas fumes were pungent just walking into the stadium and noticed everyones eyes were totally cooked as we were leaveing. All day sunday into monday our eyes were beet red and sinuses leaking like a chevy. cost us a day of work, will be interesting to see what Feld will do about this.

AMA regulates the type of fuel we run in pro racing to prevent exhaust fume poisoning indoors.

There are more exotic and higher performing fuels we could run, but they have significantly higher inhalation hazard because of the chemical composition. These additives are outlawed.

Unless the sanctioning body is providing the fuel, how do they know what is being used?

Notoriously thorough tech inspection process.

Two things can be true at the same time. Yes there is pollen in AZ. No it did not cause the problems at the stadium this past weekend.

Really all the rules limit are lead (same as pump unleaded gas), oxygen content and type of oxygenates, and specific gravity.  The ASTM D4814 standard essentially defines what "gasoline" is, so that isn't anything special.

Yeah the fuel is regulated, but it doesn't prevent exhaust pollutants - ventilation is still needed.  Common sense says idling your car in your garage with the door closed (even with a modern low-emissions car w/ catalyst) will result in bad things...

I would imagine that some of the competitors/team guys, concessions people, promoter staff would have been affected too.

I wonder what they're saying.

Here is my take on this. Yesterday was my first day I felt normal. My kids teacher questioned him if he was high because of his glossy red eyes. I am a union hvac guy and from what I’ve seen there was a ton of duct supplying the air and very little exhaust duct but that also can be hidden. Between the dust, diesel fuel, race fuel, fireworks and a roof just barley open it just sits up high with no where to escape. We sat In the 400s so im sure we were sucking it in all night. When you first walked up to the stadium  and got to about 20ft from the door you can feel the air and smell the race gas,so that’s telling me there is more positive pressure trying to push the air out rather then sucking the fresh air in and exhausting out through the roof. Not a good system for Motorsports.

This whole situation is pretty unbelievable. What is even more unbelievable is that some people are still trying to argue it was allergies.
