There's what, in excess of 15 feet on the ground there and it's April. We are thinking of going this year but maybe we've picked the wrong one? What would they do if the track is still under 5 feet of snow in June?
I don't know, but this is Motocross. I say they should run it!
Mammoth would be crazy difficult on snirt, though. I'd imagine 90% of the pack would pile up in that right-hander at the bottom of the downhill.
Snirt?
I think one year in the 90s they postponed it until later in the summer. This year they broke the all time record for snow, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they moved it.
What Dunlop do you run on Snirt?

I just snirted.
Studded mitas tires!
I was watching the last snocross race of the season last weekend and the track got down to dirt in some areas. The announcer said the track conditions was a mix of snow/dirt and referred to it as snirt.
Snowy dirt. Snirt.
I read that in a 1980s-era MXA.
EDIT: I raced in it once, too - at Sunrise in Adelanto. Snirt straight up SUCKS as far as I'm concerned! It's more slippery than mud, and cold AF.
Mammoth race in the 90s was postpone due to earthquakes. What would postpone it this year would be the the snow melt making a lake in the pit parking. I think one year they had to pump the water out.
There was a lot of snow in 2017! That was when they had to "pump out the pits". The mtn stayed open for skiing until Aug!!!
I'm pretty sure and hopeful everything will go as planned.
This was in May of 2017 I believe.
In 1993 I believe it was postponed until September because of snow, not earthquakes. I raced it that year and the driver of one of the buses that brings you in was showing some of us pictures she took in June at her apartment and there was a good 15ft of snow outside her front door.
The problem is not snow, it’s melting snow.
The basin off Minaret road in Mammoth where the track paddock is located can sometime be under 20 feet of water in spring…
No chance it's happening. Mountain bike races scheduled for June in the Sierras have already been postponed to September.
I dropped a note to the promotors asking for an early call (or any call at all!) so we can plan our summer. If they respond I will post it here.
We will do the Hangtown Quals in May for sure.
I emailed them too as I have other options for Father’s Day weekend that I’d need to buy tickets for. It was over a week ago but I don’t think they know yet. I bet it’s a wait and see what it looks like last week of May deal.
I'd plan on it being late summer. There is so much snow up there that will melt it will be biblical.
Pit Row
I hope you guys don't really believe they'll make a call before all the qualifiers have paid off, errr... are completed.
Maybe I’m reading your post wrong, but there has never been 20’ of water anywhere near the track. Lol
I’ve spent a LOT of time in the town of Mammoth and been to most of the races there, over the years… I’ve seen 3-5’ of standing water in the parking lot several times only a week before the race, but they pump that out pretty quick and it’s always been good when the racers show up.
granted… this year is an all-time record, so there’s a pretty good chance the race could get postponed
...Myron gots to get paid!
I live in Tahoe and it’s brutal. It just snowed more today. We have feet upon feet of super packed ice/snow everywhere. Caked anywhere there is the slightest shade part of the day. It’s like a glacier rolled through and coated everything.
The only saving grace is the equally brutal sun about to come. I want it to get hot and melt fast, but that can also ruin the structure of everything with flooding.
Yeah maybe 20 feet is too much, but in 06 or 07 (cant remember) I was back there a month before and it looked like the water was bottomless...
This soffit is 18 feet in the air, I doubt they’re racing in June. I’ll bet they’ll still be skiing in June.
We raced both years, I can’t remember the weather at that time. But I do remember snowboarding the week after the race.
a few people pulling trailers down low ok the pits had to get some help getting out, because the mud/ soft dirt, but they really do a great job getting the water out.
we used to go up and ride the track a month or so before the race, before they started locking the gates. We even hit permission to turn on the valve and use the hoses to water the track. It was still beat up from previous years races, but it was great practice. I think they stopped that around ‘99 or 2000.
They’ve already announced the slopes will be open until August at least…skiing in June is a semi-normal thing up there.
Ive snow boarded after the race, many years in the past. The track was dry and the lifts were still going.
But this year is definitely different. Time will tell… my daughter just got back from a trip and there was snow up to the 2nd floor window and a 15’ tall tunnel to get to the front door. Pretty insane conditions
That picture has been floating around for a while now .
There’s a bunch of good ones in this -

This was my daughters rental
Mammoth resident here, sorry but there is maybe 1% chance of the race happening on time in June this year. Highly likely it gets postponed. So. Much. Snow.
They are trucking it out of town now in dumptrucks like Feld moving dirt from sx stadiums. Nuts.
on the brighter side Im staying a week in July with my whole family. Rather than hiking and mountain biking we can go snowboarding! crazy to think that when I booked last year.
