Going over to look at it in a day or two! If I can get it for a certain price I have in mind I’m sold on it. I really don’t need another bike, but I’ve yet to hear a bad thing about them. Don’t really care if the forks suck on an MX track, already have two KTM 125s for that. I just realized that I have a 150 cylinder that needs plated too, if I get the 200 I would have all of KTMs small bore offerings which is kinda cool. Really like the idea of putting the motor into a linkage chassis in the future.

Keep the pics coming! Would love to hear about what service life you guys were getting out of pistons/cranks, and what kinds of mods you did and how effective they were. Appreciate everyone chiming in!

Bone stock, except for a Motion Pro throttle cable.  New piston and rings around 2014.  Hockey Stick exhaust got really gooey and was constantly repacking.

My 2008 200 XC was an awesome bike. Super fun for the woods, track was pretty meh. Heavy 3 gallon tank and bad suspension made it a heavy bike on the track. Woods, not so much. It was awesome. Get one if you can. EXC transmission is jank imo. 1st is so ungodly low its pretty unusable. 2nd is actually your first gear lol.

I had a 2009 KTM 200 xcw and it was a lot of fun.

I have a 2005 exc and love it. It has around 200 hours on it with no major problems. Suspension is good for New England single track. The engine is amazing. I don’t mess around with much on it. It has a FMF gnarley, stock non hockeystick silencer, Recluse clutch, GPR steering stabilizer, and suspension revalve.

Definitely consider the bike. It’s a ton of fun.

Went and looked over the bike yesterday, when I first saw it years ago it was super clean, but the owner left it sitting against his house under the pool cage. Lots of oxidation and rust, and definitely needs a bit of reviving and money put in it. Might still snag it just to put in the corner of the garage until I have time to dig into it.

I have a 04 that I've had since 07 and love it, the motor is the best part, doesn't really lack anywhere. I do have a 125sx ecu  on there that helps with a little over rev and a gnarly pipe pro circuit silencer but stock hockey stick silencer is better. The suspension is obviously the bad part but is alright for the woods

My wife is almost ready to move on from her CRF 230 to a real bike and we are kind of between an older 200 and a YZ 125 or KTM 125/150. Seems like you can find a better deal on a YZ since they have been the same for so long and easy to get parts for. The 200s there is still some deals out there to be had but certainly not any show stoppers in my area currently.

Older ktms have a bigger feel than a yz125, but the engine is friendlier, get your wife to sit on one and maybe ride it before commiting. My brother has an 05 and I can not get comfortable with the handling on it coming off Hondas.

Yeah if I could find a buddy that has something similar for her to ride around on and try that would be best. She is pretty tall at 5'9" but I wonder if the KTM or YZ is taller. For moto the seat height isn't an issue but you get into some rough woods stuff and have to kickstart it on a hill or something it starts to show.

I'm 5'9" also and kicking it isn't that big of an issue, it's more the handling. I'm not saying she can't handle it but it will be a change from the 230. Also, no lowering links with PDS suspension, just food for thought.

Yeah for sure and she has never ridden a 2 stroke so that will be certainly a different feel. Weighing 30lbs less than the 230 will be nice as well.

From what I remember they kinda like to scream and stock jetting is really rich. My stock silencer was so loaded up gunk when I bought it, it was ridiculous. Good on her if she can crank on it, otherwise a 150 might be a better choice. Nice thing with them is the power valve is tunable. Just my .02.

I would not describe the 200 as a screamer. They have pretty good grunt for a small bore, good midrange and a little flat on top in stock form. I don’t think the 150 gives up much low end to the 200. Maybe a small amount but it’s so dang smooth it’s hard to tell.

Agreed, not a screamer in stock form.

As much as I love my KTM 200....

The pre-16 150 platform is better... you lose a bit of bottom, but its so much better everywhere else

Picked up the 200 tonight! He gave it a really good wash and the thing is pretty damn clean. I would say 30-40 hours. Bone stock other than an FMF turbinecore, Nihilo axel blocks, and an Emig racing top clamp. I’ll pull it outside tomorrow and get some pictures.

Here’s a quick pic today. 2F1C5CF7-EEC7-42BB-A269-84397044B8CE

Like I said in the original post, this thing sat outside on a pool deck for the last 3-4 years or more, it was owned and ridden by an old man with a bunch of money and then given to my boss 6 years ago, and his son raced it 2-3 times. I’ll get some better pictures tomorrow but the rims have minimal tire rub, swingarm is gash/scratch free, fuel tank has no major scratches or flaws, and the motor is SUPER tight. Going to pull the Airbox off tomorrow to clean and pull the swingarm to grease the bearings. Didn’t come at the best time financially so it’ll be a little bit before I really get into making it ready to ride, but I couldn’t let it get away for the price. I did order a new air filter just so I can fire it up.

Looks like an 05 to me they never seem to come when you're financially ready for it.  Hope the swingarm isn't all chewed up looks like the underside of the chain slider is missing.

Yeah the slider is just rotted away from old age and weather, swingarm is as clean as a whistle.

FYI, that engine will bolt in to any 125/150 chassis until 2015.  I have done a few, with a few engine mods they can be the bike KTM should have made.  I had 03 and 04 200 sx’s in linked frames.

This one was my favorite.  03 200sx engine, with some mods, 13 125/150sx chassis

I have had a few 200's and a few 150's. The 200 has way more low end. The 17 and later 150 has more low end than the 15 and earlier. JD jetting kit, clean the power valve real good, vee force reeds and FMF spark arrestor. There are guys around who can get the suspension to work decent, especially the later models. I would avoid the 07 and earlier. The 14 is the cats meow year. Better mid and top end. Suggest going down 2 teeth in the rear to a 46. that way 1st gear is usable and the bike's suspension is loaded, not just revving.

F0BC38E3-A269-42E2-B7B1-65BC7F7B8294Greased swingarm and shock bearings, antiseized chain adj bolts, cleaned up the brake pin and put on some good used OEM Brembo pads. Took that heavy ass rusted Oring chain off, sprockets have like no time so I’m just gonna run a cheap chain til it all wears out. Cleaned the Airbox and reassembled. Came apart really easy and went back together even easier. Didn’t have to beat my head against the wall once. Bike is really tight all around, just weathered. Can’t wait to fire it up.

My eventual goal would be to swap it into a pre 2015 chassis! My friend had a 15 125 that handled really damn good.

Keep an eye on the bottom shock heim joint, they like to eat them. At one point someone was making a poly bushing replacement.

Rebound adjusters in those forks can be really finicky if you service them yourself.
