Surgical wounds won’t heal?

I’m looking for some input from someone with experience on their surgical wounds not healing and what helped them recover. I broke my fibula back in September by twisting my ankle. I was hopeful surgery wouldn’t be needed so the doctor waited a few weeks to monitor bone movement, which it did end up moving. I had surgery the first week of October and although the bone itself healed, I’ve had problems since the end of October with the wound draining a clear liquid that eventually led to infection. I ended up having another surgery to get the hardware removed.

So, here I am almost three weeks post-op from my second surgery and my incision is beginning to drain again. I’ve reached out to schedule second opinions with other doctors only to be told that the wait for a second opinion appointment is a month or so out. Has anyone on here had experience with a similar scenario that can offer up their thoughts or what they did to help recovery?

Look into hyperbaric chambers, they're massive for wound healing.

I have, the only thing I can really say is stay on top of the cleaning, and I assume the incision is getting pulled from movement.... i that case, you may really have to dial it back for a bit. I had to use maxi pads to absorb the goop at times. Dr's will have the correct answers, listen to them

The fact that you broke your lower leg and tried to get away without medical intervention tells me you probably weren’t taking things seriously enough. Not a knock against you, we’ve all done it. But I suspect you’re not taking the surgery rehab seriously enough, either. Until you can get a second opinion, follow your first Dr’s opinion closely. He probably said stay off of it and keep it elevated. Do those.

I lacerated the top of my foot awhile back and that bled like a mf. If I stayed on my feet it would seep through the wound closure for a few weeks. Lower leg wounds take forever to heal if you don’t get off your feet.

I strongly agree with this statement.

Most hospitals have a high pressure, hard shelled chamber that are the most effective, but require a prescription and can be difficult to get in frequently.

Soft sided, lower pressure chambers are available in most areas at med spas, chiropractor offices, rehab centers, wellness centers etc. If your budget allows and they have a decent package available, 1 hour/day 5x/week for 2-4 weeks will show incredible results.

I have worked with the leading doctors in the hyperbaric space, I learned a lot and have seen firsthand some amazing things. I've seen Alzheimer's patients remember their daughters name after 2 weeks of treatment, diabetics save their limbs from neuropathy, burn victims supercharge their healing, and felt the benefits of athletic recovery firsthand.

I got Aldon and the boys going with chambers back in 2018 and all of these guys still own and use them regularly.

I had a bad ulcer on my ankle that refused to heal. I got to a point where I couldn't walk. It was a deep hole that my wound care clinic would inspect, measure, and clean once a week. Never once did they take the time to offer Hyperbaric chamber therapy even though that's why I sought them out in the first place. I guess they got me on the treatment merry go round and wanted to milk my insurance for awhile.

I saw a new doctor and he told me to get Diosmin Hesperidin pills. I got some off Amazon and within 30 days it was 100% healed.

These over the counter pills increase circulation and can repair damage to your vascular system, increase circulation, and promote healing.

Maybe it could help your situation.

I'm going to continue taking them. Many athletes take it.

That’s not the case at all. This is not my first broken bone. I’ve done the same thing to my other leg and had no issues recovering from the surgery which I had done right away. The decision to wait this time was made with my doctor. I was not avoiding medical intervention. And as far as recovery, I’ve been doing what they tell me to and it doesn’t seem to be working, which is why I’m asking others on a forum about their experience. The doctors tell me to be weight bearing as tolerated. The input I’m getting here seems to contradict that which is why I’m here asking. I’ve also been elevating my leg for hours every day and all night for about 5-6 months as well as icing periodically. I’ve completely changed my diet, stopped drinking caffiene, taking in an extra 70g or more of protein every day and none of the myriad of things I’ve tried seem to help.

Thanks for the input. I have an appointment to get the stitches out tomorrow and will definitely be asking about a prescription for the hyperbaric chamber. Otherwise, I’ll have to look into other options to get in one.

Thank you for chiming in. I feel that there is some sort of issue preventing proper healing such as poor circulation. These recommendations are exactly why I made this post. I will definitely be looking into this and also seeing what my doctor has to say about it.

It frustrates me to hear that. There are so many issues that can be resolved using hyperbaric oxygen - actually solving the root of the problem, not masking the symptoms.

I was involved with the International Hyperbaric Association and the leading doctors in the space. One of the most covered topics was the doctors discussing how to get their findings published. The pharmacy industry has a pretty good handle on blocking the studies that highlight hyperbaric oxygen as the primary treatment.

Information suppression is a big cause for the lack of awareness, but also doctors need to be proactive at looking at alternatives. Many go to school, learn their way of practicing medicine and don't leave that box they've created for themselves.

If anyone has any questions about Hyperbaric Oxygen, give me a shout. I am no longer involved in the industry for profit, I am in a totally different space now. But I learned a lot about the technology and truly believe in it. I also have a good source if you're looking to purchase or rent a soft-sided chamber for your home.

Well, shit - pardon my incorrect assumptions. I’d stick with the docs advice and supplement some of the healing aids others in this thread have provided.

When I had my ankle surgery. Pre and post op, my Dr’s main concern was swelling with regards to the wound. I thought I had it elevated, he came in the room and said I need it elevated. He had the nurses bring in a stack of blankets to put my leg on and said. That’s elevated!  So lying on my back my thigh was 90 deg and knee was bent over the stack of blankets 90 deg. He made the stack of blankets the height from my buttox to the back of my knee. When sent home I’d elevate in this manner several times a day and all night. It’s a pain in the ass but never had an issue. Dr said around the ankle there isn’t much skin there to stretch so the wound is the first thing to open. Good luck and hope you get it sorted.

Post-op swelling can restrict the blood vessels, which will inhibit healing.  This is not  uncommon.  Also see if you can get in to see a wound care specialist.  Good luck.

Good call. Like the others said the chamber is most likely your best recovery source at this point.

Can't really help with the medical advice, but I am a believer in the hyperbaric treatments. My dad had a stroke in 1999 that left him nearly paralyzed. He has recovered enough to regain speech and the ability to walk, and I believe it was at least partially the hyperbaric chamber which led to those results.

Get antibiotics. I can’t believe your dr thinks fluid drain from the wound is ok.   1 incision from a elbow surgery was infected. Aurora hospital panicked & put me on a super strong antibiotic. Treatment for if you where exposed to chemical war fare. Yrs later ab,s don’t work very well. Since 2-8 I,ve had knee & shoulder injections in my joint. It took 12 days to get my hand on my shifter in my van& a few more days to get full motion. Then 3 surgeries on diff dates to remove tumors. 1 was huge Dr,s cut it off my spine back muscle. Other 2 surgeries where 3 tumors in each thigh. 2 bottles of 20 clindamycin &1 bottle of 14. Epaderal injections in Hot nerves in my back the day after my last tumor surgery.  Butt to leg was numb & problems days later. Surgery 3 my 3 incisions r not healing that good. I think my body is saying too much it can’t constantly be healing stuff. Pt on shoulder too. Beyond exhausted working 20+ hr days 7 days a week then dr stuff.   Any other injuries besides your leg& ankle ?  I think our bodies do a great job healing but you can hv too many injuries . And it slows down the healing.

Maybe consider a wound care specialist doc.

Good luck.

3/29/2023 9:19am

Ripped my lower leg open didn’t get stitches intill 25 hrs later. The gash was infected already. Dr,s said we can,t  do stitches then had a meeting. I got 40 stitches ovr my tib & sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim antibiotic. Dr said he slit his leg open in the same spot in college. It took him ovr a yr to heal.  I worked 7 days a week trucking with no day off for months. My leg was infected for along time . No blood flow when you sit & leg wounds  heal slow being so far from your heart.

I would definitely get that wound looked at ASAP if it's draining again! I had some Hardware removed September of last year two weeks after they took the stitches out it started draining didn't think much of it was on vacation in Havasu LOL! Turned into a bone infection lots of gnarly antibiotics after that! Luckily didn't have to go back in to clean anything up but it was close!

You’re going to be a hurting unit when you get old! And this weather does suck. We had a few nice days that I got to go for walks around the block. Other than that, I’ve been spending a lot of time inside since September. Only got in one month of work before surgery again. Worst part is that when I broke it initially, I had just quit my job and was taking a few weeks off before I was supposed to start at my new employer. Broke it twisting my ankle on a 110! I finally got to start there beginning of February and now I’m off again already. Don’t have a great feeling about it. My boss/old coworker/friend who convinced me to come there 100% has my back, but I’m not getting warm fuzzy feelings from HR.

Seek out an Infectious Disease and Internal Medicine Doctor as soon as possible.

Unfortunately I have been through this extensively.  I caught an infection on the first plating surgery for my clavicle.  The infection was known within a week after surgery.  I was put on oral antibiotics and had debride surgery.  We thought that did the trick.  About 6 weeks later my plate broke doing something mundane.  During the surgery to remove the hardware, it was found out the infection never really cleared up, and it was impeding bone recovery.  I was put on a picc line with intravenous antibiotics for 8 weeks, then another 8 weeks of oral antibiotics.  About 6 months later I had my clavicle plated again since it had never healed.  After that surgery I could never get the wound to close and heal.   Of course it was found that the infection was still present and I was back on a picc line for another 10 weeks, then oral antibiotics for the duration of that plate.  It was hoped we could keep the infection simmering under the surface enough to allow the bone to heal, then remove the hardware and irradicate the infection at that time.  Unfortunately the bone never healed and the hardware was removed again.   Picc line again.  This all happened over the course of about 18 months.  7 total surgeries and many months of antibiotics, I'm left with a non fused clavicle with about a 32mm gap. My digestion never totally recover from all the strong antibiotics.  Infections are the worst and it is very difficult to get rid of them if there hardware is still in place.

It was my right clavicle.

Get healed b4 you go back or you get hurt more. No hr person cares about anyones health.  I went to work 3 1/2 months after a reconstructed knee on the worlds strongest hhg rig. Wotc was in full effect when I went back. We always fired all the military guys & then they wouldn’t because of the big tax credit. I was literally a 1 man crew. Game keepers thumb, broke my hand 4 times, foot twice I worked with that. Blown out shoulder, broken back with ruptured disk.  All trucking is dead wages from 1.00 to .65 -.70 now 1099 Chicago. In 3 weeks I hope to b healed up. Going to North Dakota oil field then . Chain up repeatedly in snow now , mud in a few weeks.  When I get there I,ll keep my ears open on what mechanics make. It’s not a boom like yrs ago but there’s some work . You could get a schedule like a driver maybe . Work 4-5 weeks take a week off. Mechanics should be aprox 4k + a week.
