Did Tomac’s crash at A2 change him?

Tomac superfan here, but not seeing this discussed enough. The beginning of the season Tomac was completely untouchable and nobody, not chase, not Webb, had anything for him. Even with a fall he still came back to catch right up and win the race with a gap. Fast forward to A2, he crashes, and just has not looked like the same guy at all. Barely hanging with them, “not willing to take any risk” and rolling around in 8th, looking super stiff etc etc. I know he had neck strain as he said, but even in Detroit he pushed for a little bit, and then just seemingly dropped anchor again.
I’m thinking he really might be rattled from A2, but I am really hoping he turns this around soon and starts hammering again. Even with the 5 wins he just doesn’t look the same at all since that crash.
with that being said, I’m still very confident he takes this title home.

I think it did, I’m also a big fan. I think it either rattled him mentally a bit or aggravated his neck that he’s been having issues with. If you look at the impact he took it would make total sense that his neck has been bothering him like he claimed.

I also thought he had turned the page when it comes to mental issues but who knows, maybe it was an awakening like when Dungey crashed in the outdoors several years back and broke something in his neck (or was it his back?) I hope he gets it figured out and comes out swinging soon! But if the crash was an eye opener to him to kind of tone it down a bit I can’t really blame him

That was the gnarliest crash he's had in awhile.  Could have been career ending for sure.  He got very luck with the tough block saving him.  I'm sure it scared him, but not sure he would have signed up for Outdoors after that if he decided he wants to wind it down into retirement.

Did he announce before or after A2 that he was gonna race the whole year this year?

I'd say if it was after then it probably didn't change him much.

Same Tomac as always, hot and cold with no warm. I think Webb is going to take the title back and will beat Tomac into submission now that Webb has the points lead. Cool

I said it before, When i saw that look in his eyes, In the tunnel at A2. He looked like he was wondering why he signed up for it again.

Didn't he win Daytona?

He did but I agree with the OP, He hasn't been the same, Daytona is it's own animal.

No he hurt his neck a couple of weeks ago. That’s it. Expect him to smoke everyone this weekend if his neck is back to 100%.

I doubt it, but I do know that this season is checking all the boxes for me. We will talk about this year for decades.

Do you think the hurt neck could be residual from the A2 crash?

You ever strain your neck before? Not all sprains / strains can heal in just a weeks time. Pretty sure that Tomac didn't ride during the week after Indy & leading up to Detroit and he was in salvage mode.

Prepare to watch great racing go down between Webb, Eli & Chase for this title. The championship will be going to go down to the last few races and be one of the most talked about title chases to date.

He is 30 now, most of the greats have been sitting home a few years by this point. It's really pretty remarkable he's done what he has. Unlike stick and ball sports that have gone tissue soft allowing old guys to hang in, this is still the same gnarly grind it's always been

No way bro, you must be new here.  According to the geriatric ward, today's racers are straight pussies compared to the heroes of yesteryear.

He did and explained his 9th but he hasn’t been the same speed since that big get off as go back and watch the first three races!! He was destroying the tracks including whoops and everything in his path and was putting the bike anywhere he wanted!! Round 4 until now he has seemed off and not quite the same beast IMO

I mean Reed did break his scapulas and race that night in Detroit…

I know it was just a heat race, but he came out in classic beast mode in Oakland. I’ve never seen him hit whoops that fast  - ever.

He wasn’t as strong in the main that night (still won) but that heat race showed me he can still go 100% after the A2 crash when he’s feeling it.

Maybe, maybe not. Only another elite racer knows how their minds work. It would be an eye opening reminder for the 99.9% of the rest of us though. Could have had a delayed effect. Probably shook his family up though. I’d have a hard time watching my loved one going that fast that late in their career.

The worst crash Tomac has had this year was on his pillow. Damn thing hurt him while he wasn't looking.

Nah, Webb switch his favorite pillow with a crappy hotel pillow. Hasn’t slept well since.

He's just managing the championship. If the bike or his body/mind isn't there that particular night he's not going to push it. Showing up at every round is far more important for the team and the bank account then risking a crash trying to go for first every weekend.

I’ve posted this a few times but I don’t think he is as comfortable on the new bike as he was on last years, especially when the track gets rutted up

He's the guy that's winning.  But I mainly posted that because I knew it would trigger people.

Well he did manage to loose the points lead. Whistling

That was no joke one of the luckiest crashes I’ve ever seen. Tuffblox twice saved him from potential serious injury and/or a DNF on the night in the span of 1 second. So happy he’s alright. I don’t think it altered his mindset though.

Ay crash “could” be career ending. I think that’s overreacting.

We’ve seen more careers end from tip overs in corners than crashes like that. All major contenders have had big off track crashes like that (Webb last year, Kenny on RCH in 16, RC boat, ETC) and were mostly fine.

Tomac has had a bad few races yet is still only 3 points out. Still most wins. And plenty of racing to go.

That was a gnarly crash, go watch it again.  He was very lucky to come out of that without serious injury.  Had the tuff blocks not been there he could have been out for the season with broken bones.

Which "tip overs in corners" have ended so many careers that you speak of?

If I remember this right, he was off at A2 until the 3rd main when he crashed. I really think it's comfort on the new bike. I really believe that every bad race we have ever seen him have, it's due to severe arm pump. Obviously not from lack of fitness.

It changed him that much that he came out the next weekend and won
