This loss was tough on the Italians

Bad luck seems to be the only kind of luck the Australians bring with them to the MXDN. It's time for a new rabbit's foot, horseshoe, or whatever they use for luck.

I intend to post a full recap later, but I just gotta share a story. I was one of about 40 US fans (rough estimate, I'm saying non-team members & non-family) at the race. I was hanging out with two thirds of next year's Team UAE and three of Wayne Rooney's uncles (inside jokes, sorry) in front of the red bull tour bus with the rock band playing. This drunk Italian dude figures out we're a group of Americans and comes straight up to me and just starts INSISTING that I admit the US got lucky. It would go something like this:

"Come on, admit it! Team USA got lucky"
"No, they rode well and won"
"I'm going to give you another opportunity to admit they got lucky"
"Well, they didn't get unlucky, but that's different from getting lucky"
"My American friend, I'm going to be very nice and give you one more opportunity to admit your boys got lucky"

This goes on for about 5 minutes, I'm not going to say we got lucky, he's drunk and taking it really hard, like he just needs to hear an American say we got lucky and he can go home a bit less depressed. Just then David Philippaerts strolls by, and this guy grabs him and pulls him over.

"Admit to David that you got lucky!"

(No way in hell I'm saying it, but I really don't want a scene, and I really don't want to say anything that would offend DP, so I pause for a bit. DP smiles and shakes his head at me, kind of seeming like he feels bad for me, for the position I'm in. Before I can say anything)

"Here, here, take a picture with David"

(I never ask to do that, but DP was fine with it, probably hoping it would put an end to it, so I got a picture)

"Now! Tell David that he is really fast!"

(like DP needs to hear this from me...)

"Of course he's f'n fast. I'm a fan of the US, but I'm not blind, he is awesome!"
"OK, now I'll give you ONE MORE CHANCE to admit your team got lucky!"

At this point DP is done with him, shakes his head at him, and says something to the guy in Italian. I really got the feeling that DP was embarrased by this guy and felt like he was being rude to me. I was actually uncomfortable since I didn't want DP to have to deal with this guy and I wanted to let DP get away, so I kept talking to the dude to let DP have a chance to get away, which he did. Once DP was gone, I'd had enough. I told him last year it was USA, France, Belgium, this year it was USA France Belgium, and it would probably be that way next year in Colorado, too. Then I asked him if it was luck in 2005? 2006? 2007? 2008? That was enough for him, and he stumbled off.

They did have the best team on paper. The Italians had two 450 World Champs and Guarneri is a solid 250 rider, finishing 4th in the MX2 series. With Philippaerts going 2/3 and Carioli's first moto win, they only had six points. Carioli would have come back from a bad third moto start to at least a top five if he rode like he usually does. That's 11 points. Guarneri was running 5th when he got landed on and it's safe to say that he would have finished in the top ten if he had a clean moto. That's 21 points and a MXoN win for the Italians if they had a clean last moto.

Hello everybody.
I am the Italian who had that conversation.
First, I wanna say i am sorry because I admit I was pretty much annoying in that case, I remember that well and i remember exactly what happened...and it happened indeed that way

That way means also that even if I was drunk (Yes I was) I always weight my words, and in fact nothing offensive or bad words excahanged between me and the American guy, and he can say that

I am sorry for that, I was really pissed off about the outcome of the day and the outcome of the race, call me sore loser but I am still saying that luckyness was to your side this time in a big way.

I dont want to create any scandal or any mess right here but I want you to know something about what happened later, in the Alpinestars hospitality

I was there, still drunk i know, but I never lose control (believe me ), I went to Ivan Tedesco and another security guy and pretty much the same conversation developed (I admit I was a litte insistent), but when the begun to call me Fuckin' Italian e say Fuck to My nation that's where respect lost balance
I got pretty upset about that, I mean, ok I was a little annoying that night, but never used bad words against anybody and especially against the Nation....

As soon as I pretend apologies for those words against me and my Nation, Ivan and the other guy invited me to get outside.....

This one to let you know that maybe I was annoying that night but I always talked with respect , respect that I didn't have from that 2 americans....how would you feel if you was facing 2 Italians that call you Fuckin' american...from Fuckin' Usa...it hurts eh?!

That's alot of iffs Camper.. Yes Guarneri got 4th in the championship but for the most part he was barely a top 10 guy all year. He had a few decent heats but overall we both know he was nowhere close to the 4th fastest in the series. The whole landed on him thing was 100% his fault so that's not bad luck that was a bad decision. I watched that crash probably 10 times since the race and I think it's obvious what happened. He scrubbed the table right into Bryners line. I meen the kid took off on the far right and landed on the left. With bikes all around him. That was not a bright move. I heard the announcer say Byner over jumped but it looked to me like he was going to downside it perfectly and if Guarneri wasn't in his line nothing would of happened. I'll admit TCs was bad luck but Guarneris was his fault. Before the race I predicted that Billy Mac,and Guarneri would keep Italy and GBR from making the podium and I was pretty right on. Either way in a race like this there's always numerous if ands or buts to bench race about. That's why we love it. And I always enjoy shooting what ifs back and forth w/mx guys like yourself... But I'm right lolWink

This is great! Thanks Grover and Paulbeds.
Paul don't take it too hard what IT said to you, its just that luck had nothing to do with it. IT shows up for the MXdN everytime he is asked and rides his heart out.

I really didn't like when that gorilla called me "Fuckin' italian that cheers for your fuckin' italy"...and with the support of Ivan they invited to get out togheter to solve the sitaution the old way

Paul! Couldn’t remember your name. What a small world. Thanks for coming on here and giving your side. I can confirm that the guy in the picture with RJ is definitely the guy I was describing in my initial post, and agree fully that there was no threat implied when you kept saying “I’ll give you one more chance”

Sorry to hear about what was said to you by the other American (I assume it was the security guy who said that to you?), but remember there was a lot of partying going on in there, not everyone stays as respectful at high blood alcohol levels as you or I. You never did anything disrespectful that I saw, and I honestly felt for you, I can vouch that you are a very passionate supporter of Italian moto. But…I had a few in me also and so I eventually had to go on the offensive for my country after the very fast (there, I said it again for you!) and very accommodating DP was out of earshot. I'll send you a PM with my contact info here in the states, get your bald head over here for next year's race and let’s drink some more beer and talk some more smack.

And next year, in the US, if the Italians don’t get unlucky, like they did in Brescia, they will give the US team a hell of a run. Happy?

I’ll try to post the pic of me and DP in a bit, since you posted your mug for all the world to see I guess I can too.

classic. Small world.

I am pretty sure after the B team crap no american there wanted to hear they got lucky. If Ivan told you to fuck off I can't blame him. Being a respectful prick is still being a prick either drunk or sober.

X 2. When you opened your big Italian mouth and said "I'll give you one more chance", I'd have taken that as a threat. Especially if I was drunk, which I wouldn't have been at a MX race. Why go to the biggest race of the year and get drunk. Probably don't even remember what actually happened. Nothing worse than a drunk big mouth.

Ing - the discussion Paul and I had was about 4 hours after the last moto. Ever been to an mxon in Europe? It's a party and a mx race. Some partying during the race, and lots of it after. Rock band on the roof of the red bull bus. Big cold beers for 5 euros (cheap in Europe). It was a f'n awesome party, and by that time of the night, the sober people were in the minority.

And the only way you'd have felt threatened by the "one more chance", was if you have absolutely no ability whatsoever to read people's body language, facial expressions, or tone of voice, AND insist on taking someone's words literally when they're drunk AND speaking their 2nd (3rd? 4th?) language.

I've been to a MXdN in Europe (Saint-Jean-d'Angély, France 2000) and there's nothing like it. Seriously the most incredible mx experience I've ever had. Funny thing is I don't drink but I found myself shit faced 1/2 way through the day. Other then dealing with the French fans that hated the USA it was a perfect day. Carmichael,Hughes and TP199 were amazing and being around the most passionate mx fans in the world was a huge treat.

THAT WAS THE BEST TRACK I'VE EVER SEEN.

IMO if all the fast teams didn't get crushed in the wreckage of moto 3 the order likely would have been ( Italy, France, US, Belgium, AUS, Germany )

I was right there in the alpinestars tent when that went down. Paul, you were being a dick. You were talking trash to a PC mechanic for a while and when he finally had enough, he told you he would rip off your head and shit down your neck. The best part was David Philippaerts came over and apologised to everyone that was around and had to drag you outside. David had to tell everyone that you were drunk and just talking shit. At that point every American there gave David huge props for being a bad ass rider and a great person for that matter. I had never met David before that moment, but after that, I am truly a fan for life.
