I wasn't a fan. But, I can not think of anyone faster than James. Not even close.
Stew not even a question
Stewart- and everyone on the line would admit it
Carmichael said that a dozen time in recent months that he could only hope for a mistake by James because he wasn’t beating him outright
I’d bet on Carmichael for the full 20+1 (or 20 laps like it was in his day). Stewart would have the fastest single lap though and I’d feel even more confident betting on that.
I got james.
However, if the track is insanely technical and the obstacles are weird sizes and not symmetrical... Mcgrath all day and twice on sunday
JS7 Or RV if james crashed like a stewart does late in the main trying a big quad or too stiff for the whoops.
Interesting question seeing how all these bad dudes would up their game to not be the first loser. My vote is for James, if he didn't kill himself trying. That's for a race. For a series, that's a different ball game.
Probably Eli 2022 because progression of the sport. Ricky 2006/2007 next for his pure ability to win races.
I was always an RC fan as well. But, there is ZERO doubt James was faster. RC has even admitted James was the driving force in his retirement.
I'd take Ricky for the championship. But, James at any single race.
Because from MC set a new standard of speed.
To me, the term "Peak Speed" eliminates any crashes and or brain farts.
James Stewart.
Pit Row
Stew! No question, no doubt, no contest.
Of course this hypothetical question is all of these riders on their best days
Agreed. In that case, Stewart in a come-from behind victory.
You seriously believe there’s been no progression in this sport?
They would get beat by current amateurs
James...there's a reason for the phrases "Stew would do it" and "it's Stewable"
For a win, JS7.
Reed has went on a huge run of wins against RC. Even Windham has as well. And obviously JS7, all in RC championship years. In a championship year, nobody has went on a run against JS7.
Purely talking SX.
Never been a massive Stewart fan, being Aussies I was obviously cheering for Reed but no one touches Stewart when he's at peak speed in supercross.
Stewart
JMB, I don't think he even came close to pushing it or near his full potential.
Kind of a loaded question. I will take the guy who showed his backside 72 times.
Need to give Villo some credit here. He won 4 straight supercross titles and led the last 80 laps of his supercross career against Stew (and Reed and Dungey).
I'm bracing myself for the downvotes and please excuse the essay I'm about to write lol. I've watched SX and Moto since 2005, and I know some hate these types of discussions, but I love this sport, its journey, and thinking about the what ifs, as I've enjoyed seeing so many great riders, rivalries, races, and championships. Honestly don't think anyone is faster than Eli's beast mode.
I do think it would certainly be most interesting between JS7, RV, and Eli indoors, and I think it would be most interesting with RC, RV and Eli outdoors.
The lack of love for RV in these threads always surprises me. Go back and watch 2011-2014. Sure JS7 had some *incredible* rides, such as Toronto 2014, but RV generally rode more championship minded, and still had the speed advantage on Stewart over those 4 years about or nearly as often as Stewart had the advantage over him. RV imo was like a faster Webb in a way, he was a bulldog.
JS7 has said he doesn't know if he could beat Eli Tomac, and is essentially glad he doesn't have to find out. Herlings said he doesn't think he has anything for Tomac on his best days. And to not acknowledge the sport's progression, despite all the riders who say it has, including Dungey, is just seeing the sport through nostalgia rose-colored glasses. Even riders like Chase, and DF14 outdoors on their best days would really, really give the past legends a run for their money just because of the sport's progression. For Eli to say that Chase was pushing him as hard as he was, there is zero doubt in my mind that the guys are just getting faster, with all the training, and technique evolution, and that just about any other year, Chase would've been 450MX champion.
All these legends left such a mark on the sport, Ricky evolved the sport with the training, James evolved the sport with the scrub, RV evolved the sport with the corner speed and steering with the rear, you could even say Dungey evolved the sport mentally, Eli evolved the sport with the feet on the pegs. And with riders like Chase, and Jett, you can see the technique continue to evolve. And if any of the past legends like McGrath, RC, JS7, even CR22 were starting out today they'd probably adopt a lot of those things and in some ways rise to even greater heights than they did.
I genuinely love this sport and the legendary riders I've gotten to witness.
