What's the difference between "not wanting 4-strokes replacing 2-strokes" and "not wanting electric motors replacing 4-strokes"

If the motor is deemed "better" shouldn't we all welcome it with open arms and get over it? That's what the 4-stroke proponents have been telling us.

lots of people I know, myself included, would love to have a 5 acre track in their backyard to practice daily on without getting shutdown for noise.. the sport only benefits from more people being involved.

Well, at least we have established that 'sound' is a important component. Its not a stretch to realize that some 'sounds' are more pleasing to the ear than others. And the sound of farting & backfiring 4-strokes is nowhere near as easy on the ears as the smoker. Perhaps we can consult the decibel meter for an opinion?

U guess if it does go electric we would have to learn to ride again, maybe ask Ashley what it is like? I for one listen to the engine to shift, hitting jumps etc so find it hard to think of hitting a jump on an electric bike...

What ever happens I dont really care as I have my choice in what I ride, which is currently being done RM250 2 banger, and spending some serious money on it ... Why you say ???? Because I can and it is my choice, don't race anymore so back to 2 strokes!!!

I had an 'injury break' for a year and a half in early '01-'02 during which the thumper population 'surged'. I remember the shock of my first trip back to Glen Helen. We parked, as usual, up on the ridge between the Nat track and the REM track.

Even all the way up there, the noise from the thumpers was so freaking loud that you could no longer sit and talk to someone sitting right next to you, but now had to shout at them.

Progress? Or regress.

How do they get away with the extra noise these days? It's definitely a wall of sound at the races these days.

I guess they dont with all the track closures.


Do 4 strokes have a different resonance (or something?) that make it sound louder and carry further at same decibels?

Silly people. eMX bikes will be the way of the future. They will also make noise just a different type. They are not whisper quiet but close. Once refined they will walk all over a combustible engine. Its not the motor tech holding it back its the battery tech.

Yes, low frequency sound (4-strokes) travels farther and through things. High frequency sound (2-strokes) bounces off of things and doesn't travel as far. That's why whales can communicate over such great distances under water. The frequency of their communication is between 40 and 325hz. The 4-stroke creates a larger explosion less often than a 2-stroke does which makes it a more powerful and lower frequency sound and causes the neighbors to be uber pizzled.

I live a mile from a local track, now closed. On practice days before 4-strokes, I rarely or barely heard the 2-strokes. When 4-strokes came, different story, and i believe the major reason the track got shut down. There were economic reasons also, but the neighborhood coalition against us really came together when Honda brought out the '02 450. That's when everyone went 4-stroke around here.
