He was small, fat with red hair. He must have suffered from teasing when he was young. It builds character. He could unleash all his rage on the bike. He turned a feeling of insecurity into a strength. Speaking of bourgeois comfort, I think Tomac was far from poor, which doesn't prevent him from having a great desire for victory.

Eli is close.  It's just that he was a late bloomer.

How many times did RC get beat two weeks in a row?

I was curious.

*Stats include 125 class.

SUPERCROSS

-Longest streak in his SX career was 20 times in a row (1999 into 2000).

-8 races in a row 3x (2000, and lost the first race in 2001), (2005 & lost first race in 2006), (2006 into 2007).

-7 races in a row 1x (2003, out for 2004, lost the first race in 2005).

-3 races in a row 1x (2002)

-2 races in a row 5x (twice in 1997, 2003, 2006, 2007)

-A single race 9x

-Lost a total of 73 races out of 133 races.

-60 SX wins (12 in 125, 48 in 250/450)

OUTDOORS

-Outdoors, no more than 3 races in a row and that happened twice (1997 & 2001).

-Got beat 2 races in a row a total of 4 times. (1998, 1999, 2000, 2003).

-A single race 11x

-Lost a total of 25 races out of 127 races.

-Of the 25 MX races he didn't win, he still landed on the podium 13 times.
9x - 2nd place
4x - 3rd place

-Of the 25 races he lost, 13 were in the 125 class and 12 were in the 250/450 class.

-102 MX wins (26 in 125, 76 in 250/450)

The only guys who beat RC outdoors are:

Kevin Windham (1996 1x, 1997 3x, 2001 1x, 2003 2x)
Scott Sheak (1997 1x)
Damon Huffman (1997 1x)
Steve Lamson (1998 1x)
John Dowd (1998 2x)
Robbie Reynard (1998 1x)
Tallon Vohland (1999 1x)
Brock Sellards (1999 1x)
Nic Wey (1999 1x)
David Vuillemin (2000 2x, 2001 1x)
Sebastien Tortelli (2000 1x, 2001 1x)
Tim Ferry (2001 1x)
James Stewart (2006 3x)

I don't recall RC ever refusing an interview after a loss. The few times he lost, he would always say something like, 'I didn't have anything for him. I'm gonna go home this week and work harder.' That was code for, 'next weekend, I'm gonna put my foot on their throat.'

The answer to your initial question though, is no. 10 straight outdoor titles will never be equalled. Quite possibly the most dominant stretch of athletic endeavor ever seen.

Sebastien Tortelli (2000 1x, 2001 1x)

That might be the most effective way to understand how dominant he was. Especially outdoors. Thanks man.

No, we will never see another RC.  Only possibility would be when we start seeing genetically modified DNA super humans (which is right around the corner) and it's still unlikely they could match RC.

B8425D37-8283-4EC5-8911-7C2E19FA103AAnother RC never. You hv to look at am racing to see dominance or something interesting. Like +50 riders racing 250c , 125,30a, 40a. Or racing a older bike like a 04 cr125.

Pro125 you have a shitty pipe on your bike, check yourself ! Pro-Circuit pipes all day long if you want to unload your scoot and look over your head while roosting the face off your riding buddys

Did RC, JS, or CR have something cushy to fall back on if moto didn't work out?

How's that look compared to today's up and comers?

Everyone was doping no doubt. Are there some guys with elite fitness not making mains? Probably, there’s also guys making mains that are in pathetically poor shape (for a professional athlete) the hill brothers come to mind.

Reading this thread it became obvious to me that my all-time pick of a 3 rider team would be RC-RV-ET.

Level of competition is much higher now.

Being an old dude and seen the 70s, 80s,and 90s I can say that statement is pretty much completely wrong!

I think a better question would be, was RC the most dominant athlete ever, in any sport.

Tomac didn’t get to the right level mentally until he was older than the other 2 were when they retired. That’s what was crazy about RV and RC. Had it down mentally before they could legally drink alcohol. Rare breeds. Tomac the last couple years is for sure right there with them. Hard to argue those 3 picks, but I’ll do it anyway and say Dungey over Tomac. We are splitting hairs at this level.

RC was a different animal. The only rider since him that could have even challenged it was Villopoto. Villopoto was basically RC with injuries. Which is another insane quality RC had. Missed very few races or seasons due to injury, despite still being the fastest guy every week.

So true - I think Villopoto has somehow become underrated at this point. He's kinda just talked about as one of the guys who used to be great, typical past champion, but his absolute dominance seems to not be mentioned as much as it should be. The only other guys in the sport's history that dominated at his level for as long as he did (in their cases, longer) were Carmichael and McGrath.

I agree - VIllopoto went on a rampage.

2007 Des Nations.

Did Carmichael have to say that to Reed 6 Saturdays in a row at the end of 2003? Just wondering...

5 hr bike I bought it with that pipe. I rode it once then rode the practice bike. Probably getting a Messico pipe or maybe a HGS. I saw Ricky race in 97 3 times. At Millville 1st lap we hear the bikes coming . RC launches off the single landing out into the whoops. With massive aggression much higher intensity than the other riders. That’s where he beat them. It was like he wanted to kill the track. The whoops where like you fing bastards I,ll kill every 1 of ya. Yeah he was fun to watch. Haha. I think even the Dirt feared him.

RC said in an interview somewhere that he was actually afraid to lose, and it beat him up so badly emotionally to get beaten that he had a rough time talking about it if he didn't have time to process it. Riders these days are a little more easy going, and aren't as hard core as they used to be...for the most part.

Records are made to be broken.  RC's and McGrath's records will stand until someone comes along who beats them.

Their records will stand as incredibly, incredibly impressive, regardless of whether or not they are ever broken.

Na, no one can out train the rest of the field as much as rc did anymore, they all train too much. Half the field had full time job’s when rc came in.
