Motorcycles are such a small part of the equation. Cars, trucks, and planes are where the work needs doing. A number of manufacturers including Porsche are developing synthetic fuels for future use.  As a side note, in the uk we are being charged huge money for electricity right now. This seems to be lining up with people buying electric cars. Of course the wonderful uk government will be making less tax money, and it goes on and on …….electric is not the answer in my opinion.

We are nowhere close to mining enough lithium, cobalt, or according to MXA copper to even approach full electrification and that ignores the lack of infrastructure to charge everything. When you see Cat and Komatsu build multiple plants to build earth moving machines then you know we are getting closer although I wonder if there is remotely enough lithium and cobalt to be mined. It takes half a million pounds of dirt to make one Tesla battery which means a light duty pickup truck with comparable range will take double that. A semi truck several times that. The environmental impact of that much strip mining and the follow on processing might make unscrubbed, coal fired power plant exhaust look clean.

Somehow i doubt that.

Just like they always have, and always will.

Whatever dude, use your electric tractor with no contact plows then. Idk what to tell you. Every country that has zoning has to have regions without restrictions or industry is impossible. Figure it out. I've never heard an air compressor at 80 dB.

I didn't read the article but just based on the post it sounds like they are introducing electric on small bikes but keeping big bikes ICE for the near future.  Isn't that stating the obvious?  I don't think anybody believes electric motors will replace ICE in the next few years, other than boutique products like the Alta and Vargina.  It would be a notable story if he said they don't see electric as the future and have no plans to replace ICE with electric, but that's not at all what he is saying.

One of my biggest concerns with electric vehicles is the cost of battery replacement when the battery goes. I’m sure the cost of batteries will come down but replacing a battery will make rebuilding a fourstroke look like couch-change.

Not sure anybody knows how often the batteries will need to be replaced.

A whole lot of people believe electric will replace ICE soon. It’s a liberal talking point. Look at the California model.

It’s like they think everybody that drives or rides has a garage to charge whatever every night. It seems to me that’s not even a possibility.

Yeah, same as some Japanese brands and electric cars. Honda, Toyota and many are behind and generally they are a bit sceptical about electric cars. Now, we don't know if they are right or if they are the first losers. We will know 2035 maybe.

Behind what exactly?

Few people drive EV's and even fewer ride E-bikes(mx or otherwise).

There was a Zero E-bike at a local bike shop for sale for months and months....owner gave up. i considered it but he was firm on $5k. Maybe at $2k. Only being able to charge it at home made it pretty useless really.

Why in the world would manufacturers invest in an obsolete technology nobody wants? Spare me that EVERYONE is clamoring for E bikes.

Biden just banned(mining) 88% of the minerals necessary for EV battery production in MN.

Our "season" is year round.....

But replacing the battery may be fatal costwise.

Hell, even replacing basic components on Chinese bikes like cables can cause the owner to scrap it.

Just like trying to rebuild blown up 4-strokes.

Well, since all the thieves are stealing the charging stations faster than they are being installed, pretty soon there will be none.  Evidently there is 2500 bucks worth of copper in those.

I can't see how, but that is what the news said. (Probably more like 50 bucks worth of wiring unless they are pulling 100s of feet out of the ground also)

Well, if they can steal ATM's in broad daylight......

They've practically been invited to steal in CA.

In my sport of karting we've moved towards power units that require less maintenance. licence figures have dropped 50% in 25 years since their introduction into the market place. They grew rapidly, but within a diminishing overall market. Spending time in the garage is what the sport's culture is largely built upon. Lose it at your peril. The less there is to talk about and discover, the easier it is to dispose of. So you might also get diminished audience figures and that has knock on effects.

Be careful what you wish for.

....and there you have it.   Real world figures of how damaging electrics are going to be for our sport.         Don't believe for a second that we'll still  have ICE bikes down the road either.

Japanese development has prioritized hydrogen ICE, not electric.

The west is developing electric.

a hydrogen hybrid ICE is probably the long term answer.

Hydrogen is likely not a long term answer either…For example- all the existing pipelines would need to be replaced due to hydrogen embrittlement. The process to “make” hydrogen requires fossil fuels so there’s that..

Lots of limitation with hydrogen when you look at its details..

You may not have to replace the battery every season but when it does go you are paying for an entire bike again.... Batteries fail A LOT.  With vehicles they at least give you an ok warranty for them, but on bikes and a 30day warranty that laughable at best? Good luck

I have yet to see any of the Alta owners mention it, so I don't think it'll be yearly.

Anyway, for motorsports I think synthetic fuels will be the future. F1 isn't going electric anytime soon because Formula E has the exclusive rights to be the only electric open wheel series until 2039. They also have the exclusive right for hydrogen that expires in the same year. After that they'll have the option to sign an extension with the FIA to continue having that exclusivity.

If there's no push to have the biggest motorsport series in the world go electric, I think motorcycle are safe for a while longer.

I think ICE and electric can coexist. We don't need to get rid of one in preference of the other. There's no reason to have them compete against one another.

Let them be seperate and grow the sport of motorcycling that way. Different series, more jobs, different corporate sponsors, etc.

Honestly, it's not a bad thing.

I'm in CA and I have a couple friends who have recently bought their first electric vehicle.   I have solar so they both asked me "What is your electricity bill with Solar?"

Point being, the cost of electricity is skyrocketing in CA.  If this continues and the price of gas keeps falling, it will soon be equivalent or even cheaper to drive an ICE car compared to an electric vehicle.  If you talk to my friends, it's almost like they just replaced their gas bill with an electric bill and have little cost savings, for now.

When electricity was cheap, everyone thought they were getting a free lunch when buying an electric car....not so much anymore.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Complete different series would be fine. But that’s not what most are talking about.

But in moto that’s not an issue. Most important thing is performance and secondly practicability. If Stark delivers close to what they promise (about 75% of the promised power and range and 10 lbs more weight), this thing is going to be a smash hit, because normally skilled riders will be much faster on them, with less mistakes and fatigue (which is also safer) and will spend way less time in garage doing maintenance.

And think about the numbers that have been ordered. The big manufacturers are worried, but I don’t know if they’re worried enough to put some serious money into development. Doesn’t look like it at the moment.

Love your point about both coexisting, Mav. Well put. Also would love to hear from Bryan about batteries for his Alta, as he seems to ride / race it quite a bit.

As for the European riding areas, e-bikes aren’t going to change your situation, sorry. Excuses to close riding areas has ranged from environmental to noise, next will be dust and erosion. It’s being driven by people who don’t like the sport you do, and thus don’t want it to exist for anyone. Sad, but that’s what you are up against.

Kinda true, because having common sense and the education of a 10 year old is easily enough to make one an expert on anything around here.

It‘s not true. Tracks close bc neighbors complain about noise. That’s it. There’s no agenda of the green party or so to ban moto.

Bingo on  the push by those who want to see our sport dead.       That war has been going on since the 70's....and we are losing.

"now we demand that ktm make hoverbikes because our neighbors complain about the tire tracks"

At some point, the euro-feminine countries have to deal with their own problems. Getting electric bikes is the last thing you need to worry about.

He's a draftsman or technician at best. Everything he posts, write it off.

Ah, it’s you! Thought I remembered that dull mumbling..

What does being a Texan have to do with anything?
