....And The Party Never Ends....
I gotta assume a bunch of ya'll are familiar with this legendary song by Robert Earl Keen....hell, I think I've been at probably 15 concerts that this song was sang by other bands.....it's been covered and melodied by some great Independent Artists all the way to Eric Church.
Original song here: https://youtu.be/iJRWtKePKuY
Anyway, fans will know the original leads to Sonny going to jail, well this dude wrote "The rest of the story" and it's pretty damn good: https://youtu.be/2mEt0UZeTEM
It's too damn bad that country music on the radio sucks so bad these days, thank goodness for modern music apps so I can share real country like this with my kids so easily.
I like that guys happy ending
The Highwaymen did it best imo
Good country still exists. Just not on the radio. At least not around here.
Red Dirt Country is all I listen to, Nashville Country is the Backstreet Boys with an accent, or Hick Hop. No thanks.
“If they ask you how this happened, I forced you in to this”……..

Amen brother.
My kids just think country is Turnpike Troubadours, Cody Canada, Reckless Kelly, Pinto Bennett (RIP), REK, Cody Jinks, The Great Divide etc. etc.
"Florida-Georgia Line?, yeah, I think I stopped to take a piss there one time." - David Allan Coe
Yep, Casey Donahew is about as close as I can get to "modern" country.

“We did not know what to think of him ‘til he sang Felize Navidad. Felize Navidad.”
I knew we had something in common, just took a while to find it.
No the road ends here in a Chicago Eastern European trk yard. Broken down & dirty dressed in rags. I,m on the road I,m on the highway ooh yeah. Dead or alive. Van Halen
REK - in a previous life (10y ago or so) I interviewed him for a magazine in his home with his wife and children.
A few highlights:
1. he is big into photography. He pulled out a photo album and he explained his photos were the characters from "Gringo Honeymoon" (the guy on the run, the old man that helped them across the river, etc).
2. Showed me photos and told stories of the 2 that were the inspiration for Road Goes on Forever. They were nurses that worked together at an old folks home that REK worked briefly. "They just kept getting back together and getting in more and more trouble in Bandera".
3. REK and his wife do not drink, which surprised me.
4. I play guitar and got to sit in his music room with REK, and his 2 daughters (that played violins) and I got to strum along and play Road Goes on Forever WITH him and his family. Was epic.
5. He talked at great length of the shitty status of "country music today". He's not a fan.
6. He worked at the IRS for one day. "It was misery. I worked the morning, went to my car at lunch and sped off. Never really worked another day ever since. I knew I'd make music work or I'd die homeless"
Was an amazing day I'll remember forever. Spent the whole day with him and his family. I've got photos of it somewhere I'll dig up.
Dang, man that’s cool as hell! 👍
this is a picture my team took. It shows Texas Monthly reprinting it. Interesting, as they never asked me. lol. His daughters are now in their mid-20s. and as you can see he still had some color in his hair. The big laugh makes me smile - he loooooooooooved being home w/ them.
He would wander around the kitchen and yell "Kathleen, the hell you keep the coffee cups?" and she'd roll her eyes and say "He's sometimes gone for long periods on the road and he has to remember where we keep things. In the cabinet to your right, Robby."
I'll be damned - I found the article! The magazine is no longer published, but this was the 1st cover story for it. It's for his exclusive neighborhood in Kerrville, Texas.

this has been a fun memory to dig up. the pic at the bottom of the family playing music was taken by me. Then I sat the camera down, picked up a spare guitar and got to jam w/ the Keen Family. Was so surreal.
Hank 3's take on modern country. His base player kind of freaks me out, he looks straight out of a Texas chainsaw massacre movie lol
One of the best live concerts I’ve ever seen.
peak country
Cory Morrow was/is a fraternity brother and a good friend. He and Pat Green got their first gigs at the crappy penny pitcher bar where I worked as a doorman. They would each play a few covers, then do Whiskey River together as an encore. Fun times, some of the best of my life.
Pit Row
Lemme tell you, Conway pulled as much trim as Burt Reynolds in his day. He was the Tom Jones of country and that Hello Darlin' was a panty dropper.
Went to see him in '82 in the 'Dome at the Houston Rodeo. He was older but still had that swagger.
My brother bought tickets to see George Jones 3 straight times when he didn't show. I asked him why he kept buying them? He said it was braggin' rights to have the most unused "No Show Jones" tickets. When he did show up...you got yer money's worth.

Great post, you guys know what’s up!
I was in that town last night at a few of those dive bars, O-bar then the Blue Light to catch up with some friends. The music scene is outstanding.
Conference!! Class of 2000.
Haha, close. Bash Riprock's, I was the doorman around '93/'94. Penny pitcher night would get a little rowdy lol
damn - you probably fist bumped me many a night in there. Fuqua was an alright dude. I was in a little band that played there frequently. Friday power hours were epic. Good times in the ol' LBK. Miss it.
