Help me choose: SX125 2015 or YZ125 06

Edited Date/Time 12/24/2022 2:30pm

Hi!

I’m getting in to this sport at the age of 35. I’ve decided that I want to try the 125 2T. My budget is limited, 2400$. Smile

I have located a few bikes on the market in my town.

1. KTM SX125 2015, unknown hours, new piston, new plastic and some other small stuff. He said the engine is renovated with connecting rod 30h ago, the owner before did. So I can’t count on that. 2000 dollars.

2. TC125 2016, 165h, engine rebuild connecting rod, piston, Rebuilt RG3 suspension, new plastic, Neken handlebar, Doma exhaust. 2400 dollars.

2. YZ125 2006, unknown hours, same owner since 2012, recently rebuilt and only started the bike up. Frame bearing.(prox), Complete crank.(prox), Piston with needle bearing and bolt.(prox), Gaskets. 1950 dollars.

3. SX150, unknown hours but looks nice. HGS system, VHM top, Suspension fully renovated 30h ago. This below was done about 5h ago: New Nikasilated cylinder, New piston, New frame bearings, Balanced crank, New swing bearing, X-trig PHDS handlebar mount, New plastic + decals. 2400 dollars.

I know it’s hard on paper to say which on is in best shape. But anyway, all help is welcomed. 2015, has the 4cs forks, are they so bad? Would you rather take 06 yz compaired to 15 sx / same with tc16?

The 4CS forks are horrible, which sucks because the engines are really good on those 15 and newer ktm/husky bikes.

on a used bike, especially ones in your price range, I’d say it’s best to be prepared to drop at least $500 on parts shortly after you buy it. Whether it be on tires, sprockets, fork seals, oils and fluids, or whatever else, you’re more than likely going to need to spend some coin on something once you bring it home. I’d say it’s best to prepare yourself for that.

based on your budget alone, I’d go with the YZ. An 06 is the same thing as a 2021 with the exception of the plastics. Buy it for $1,950, get the suspension serviced, throw some fresh tires on it, and go rip.

Merry Christmas!

I’m leaning towards the yz, I don’t like when I read, “just rebuilt” 0 hours. K why though lol. Ride to for a while, see if you like riding enough, sell that in a year for probably about what you paid, and go get a new or newer one

I own a KTM 150, but with those I would get the YZ. The 06 YZ is basically the same as now and parts, plastics, etc readily available. The 2015 KTM is like 4 generations ago as far as looks of the KTM, the motor was updated in 2016, forks in 2017 to AER. If you go Austrian, buy the 2016 as it had the latest motor. Not sure where you are located, as not sure what SE stands for, but also take parts availability into account. Those are pretty decent prices based off US standards.

Personal opinion on that, often because the work is so cheap and simple on two strokes but you know people will ask anyway, so you do it so that:

A. You can sell it knowing it won't come back on you or stitch anyone up

B. Knowing you're selling a decent bike and can stick to what you want for it.

Most of us are buying and selling because we just want something new or different, not because it's needed. I agree bodgers and idiots, or straight up scammers or unscrupulous people, can muddy this up and make people rightly suspicious, but there are legit reasons. Like the above or folks building a bike for fun and then realising they just don't need it alongside their main bike or aren't gonna get back into riding as they planned, that's quite common it seems, etc, etc.

To the OP, I'd go with YZ I'd they can drop some money off it or the Husky.

I agree with Richy on the rebuilding part. Have an 04 RM125 I built last winter just for fun. Put WAY more money in it that I should have building it. I did ride it a couple times though, now just sits since I have a 150SX. I need to sell the RM this spring, but will be hard losing money on the deal.

I don’t know.  I’ve completely rebuilt top and bottom ends in some of my 2-strokes in the past, put a heat cycle or two in them and then sell.  It’s not always a red flag.  Sometimes you’re rebuilding it for your own peace of mind and then decide you want a change.

I only use oem parts, especially in the bottom end.

Now if they say fully rebuilt with hot rods kit, or some other cheap aftermarket parts, I tend to lean away towards those.

I did the same thing recently, rebuilt my YZ, put an hour of riding on it, and sold it since I wanted a 250F again. Just because it was recently rebuilt doesn’t mean there’s an issue with it.

Sometimes you buy a blown up bike cheap enough with the sole purpose of rebuilding it to sell on. Not uncommon for a fresh rebuild to have zero hours. Ask for copies of the receipt or pictures of the rebuild for proof.

Those are all very cheap prices, not that I dont occasionally see running 125s around $2000 but those generally need lots of little things before they are track ready.  That said, its hard to go wrong with a YZ125.

I paid $3600 during the market increase for a clean 2006 YZ125, I'd jump all over that thing!

Im from Europe - Sweden 🇸🇪! I’m just afraid of the forks 4CS :/. Like it’s only 400$ between TC125 2016 and YZ 2006 both are rebuild. But it’s seems like it’s better to take the YZ because of the SSS forks?

I tried, last price is 1900$, he’s put in some money In the rebuild. Also nice with this is that he got this since 2012.

I don’t want to make it more difficult for me. But a friend of mine told me he knows a guy who wants to sell his RM-Z 250, 2017, 109h, 1 owner. Info: On 100h he did this: New- timing chain, bearings in engine, gaskets in engine, piston. The bike also  got Öhlins suspension front and back. Excel wheels with talon and some other stuff as you can see on the picture. He want 3500$, but after some talk with him, he would let it go for 2850$. I don’t know if it’s a good deal.

I like 2T more but maybe it’s better to begin with 4T? I’m not looking to race this year just to learn and have fun. 2T cheaper to rebuild… sorry to money questions in my head Wink

On the YZ125, he is asking 2400 and will give it for 1900. Smile

I’d go with the YZ as long as it was done with good parts and maybe knock a couple bucks off, if it doesn’t pan out get the newest Austrian bike you can find, the 16+ motors are really strong. Don’t be so scared of the 4cs, both of my bikes have them and I rode them for over two years, never knew they were “the worst fork” ever made until I read about them on Internet forums. Most people who complain about suspension probably don’t even know how to set sag so always take it with a grain of salt.

Good to know Smile! I’m going to make up my mind and buy the one I chooses on Monday

Is it difficult to get Suzuki or Yamaha parts in Sweden?

What do you weigh? Rmz with ohlins would be tempting especially if you are heavier.

The yz is known for having better roll on power than the ktm which can be helpful for a beginner and obviously the suspension is pretty good.

I’m 176/177 lbs and it’s actually set to my weight.it’s easy to find parts to every bike in Sweden Smile .

I don't have an opinion on the 4 strokes.  I can tell you that riding a 125 hones your skill and is a great place to start.

$1900 for a Yz125 in the U.S. is a steal.  I would grab that bike today.
