Has anybody successfully lacquered/ coated an expansion pipe? I plan on riding all winter and the bare metal as everyone knows takes some upkeep. I thought about just using black extreme heat paint over the winter just to protect it but also found clear extreme heat so still have the look of a bare metal pipe with a bit less maintenance. Maybe a terrible idea I don’t know.

If not I’ll just carry on with the scotchbrite and wd40 like I’ve been doing for years!

I used the clear VHT rattle can used for car headers and it worked pretty good. Instead of scotch brite and WD-40 every time it got any water, it only required a halfass wipe down after washing. A couple of areas did require more attention since the coating would wear quicker: fat part of expansion chamber where boot rubbed and right behind front wheel.

Years ago I used something (can't remember what it was) which required baking after I sprayed it on. The smell it left in the oven was terrible, had to get a new one. The Mrs was not happy.

Haha I was thinking of baking it just by running the bike 😄

That’s what I was thinking of using just to protect it over winter, sounds like it worked pretty well then.

I cerakoted my Scalvini cone pipes in their matte clear. It didn’t have the high temp 1800 degree rating but it’s holding up well. The first 5 inches or so out of the cylinder are a little discolored but you can’t really tell. I’ve put about 8hrs on the pipe and haven’t had to touch it with scotchbrite. I spray it with a silicone spray after washing and that’s it.

Out of curiosity, could you post a picture? I had thought about doing what you did, but was concerned about how it would look.

Actually curious to see how everyone's pipes, who coated them, look. If you have pictures, post them up!

I actually just got a Scalvini for my YZ so I’d like to see a pic as well.

I’ll post a pic tonight when I get home. I would definitely do it again because I’ve battled raw pipes since 99. I never really minded hitting them with some WD40 and a scotchbrite, but the cone pipes lose their color when you do that.

They used to put Mop and Glow on the expansion chambers on street 2t’s to protect the raw finish.

I use to get a lot of dents in stock yz250 pipes, I had several. I would blow the dents out and just hit them with some black stove paint afterwards, looked pretty good!

I tried using blue stove paint one time, did not look good.

That’s what I was going to do but saw the but clear and hoped it would do the same job while still being able to see the bare metal pipe.

I used high temp clear coat on my kx250 pipe but ended up scotchbriting it all off. Like someone else said it wears uneven and results in even more upkeep.

WD after ever ride whether it needed actual washing or not.

Only about an hour and about 5 heat cycles on the 250 pipe.

4hrs on my other 125. You can see a little discoloration on the underside of this one.

Skip the bullshit. Brillo pads and motor oil. The thicker the oil the better.

Personally I like polishing it. A lot of dirt bike cleaning sucks, but I find the pipe quite satisfying. No coat for me.

Nice! What series Cerakote is that? The air cure or heat cure? Looks good, do you have a build thread on the Suzukis or any pics?

Use SC1 when it’s brand new, and after every wash. It will have a little darker finish, but it won’t rust. Easy. The water beads up and runs off.

Same. I polish the pipe everytime I wash the bike.

Never had luck using WD40. It would dry up and the pipe would rust like I didn't put anything on it. I put motor oil on a rag and wipe the pipe down now. The motor oil clings to it much better imo.

MC-161 Matte Ceramic Clear. It’s the air cure but I threw the pipes in the oven for an hour at 250* to speed things up.
