If bringing quads to nats will help enforce sound issues on those lawn mowers, I'll consider it. I'm really tired of having to plug my ears during the quad motos at my local track, or at the coast. Could be good time to go hit up the vendors, without missing anything important Wink

Yep, it is great racing. I the X-Games didn't highlight that then nothing will.

I actually really like the Women's racing. Their first moto at Freestone was great racing between Patterson & Fiolek. The pass at the end right before the checkers had everyone (at least those that stuck around to watch) on their feet and cheering. Only time I really saw that all day.

As for ATV's, I'm aware that they've been at Steel City for the past 2 bike nationals, but the statement didn't read that "Steel City is committed to the idea of combining national ATV and bike motocross in one event", it said MXSports is. To me, that implies that this could possibly spread to more and more outdoor nationals.

Remember that Steel City was where they first tested having the races on Saturday with last years event.

DC, I think you guys have made HUGE improvements to the outdoor nationals in just a single year and I look forward to what you guys can do over the course of five and ten years. I just really hope we don't see ATV's crossover to the bike events.

I agree that there is probably good racing but there is good racing in the beginer class to. I do not leave my trailer to go watch the beginers at the local level and I am already there. I am standing out in the hot sun and sweating I want to see either legends of the sport, future stars of the sport, or live racing. Otherwise let us go home a couple of hours earlier.

I do not mean to be offensive and I do respect what your trying to do. I just think the majority of the fans are not interested in women's MX and even fewer are interested in 4-wheelers.

I think combining the atvs into the mx nationals is a good idea as long as it is done well. The quads race on a different type of track than the bikes, so if they are ran after all of the bike classes, then it will not effect the bikes. Also, it will bring in a larger crowd. The noise levels will have to be uniform. Some people do not like to watch quad races, but there are plenty of things to do at a national. If you dont like to watch quads, buy a pit pass and take a walk through there... Or maybe actually sit down and watch them. The top quad guys are going to be posting lap times faster than a lot of the bikes.
I like mx racing, whether it be on a bike or a quad. I have raced both bikes and quads. I think that after a year of a combined series, it will be well accepted.

I have seen a couple of women's pro races. Sorry to say it, but the B class at an amateur national is WAY more exciting to watch than the women's pro class.

To you people hating on the quads, I amazed at how ignorant alot of you are. You have all these biased stereotypes of how quads are, like donuts in the parking lot and that they are a joke and yes drunks and idiots at the dunes and rednecks makes everyone think they are a joke, but the top quad racers are just as good of athletes as the top mx racers. They can handle just about every jump on every national track with maybe the exception of laroccos leap and I'm pretty sure they could but idk of anyone who has attempted. Point is they are for real and fun to watch, and have them at the end of the day if you're so worried about the track, not like it much matters these days with the way the tractors groom the shit out of the tracks anyways. The same factories that support the MX racing is in it for the ATV's as well, they see the potential and talent and skill enough to spend lots of money racing them. As far as the sound thing goes, sound test them the same. I don't know why all of you are bitching cause some dumb guy has a sawed off pipe at your riding area doesn't mean we all have super loud exhausts, shit the loudest pipe i ever heard was Nico Izzi's 250f when he was doin the US open at the MGM and he passed sound right? The point is it could be a cool idea that will draw more fans and sponsors to the events and last time I checked that was a good thing. Also this bullshit about quad people being a lower class of people was pretty laughable in more ways then one. I think it's mostly stems from your ignorance when it comes to ATV racing and ATV's in general, yes people at the dunes and local places can act like "the lower class of people" as you put it, but it's not like I haven't seen all that shit done on a dirtbike as well, also it's not like the dirtbike fans are all perfect either. I also know this personally because I've been to my share of both types of racing so save your prejudice bullshit. I think it would be a cool idea that would definitely help the ATV racing and bring it more mainstream which will in turn bring more sponsors and fans to the MX national races as well. As I've said it could be a good thing if done right. Also, my point is you don't have to have all the hate towards the Quad guys, why not enjoy both? If it's not your type of racing don't watch it, but most mx fans I would think would appreciate a good MX race on machines that are a little different, perhaps I'm wrong. I stick to what I do best, I'm better on the 4 wheels but I love riding two wheels when I get a chance and I'm a huge fan of the MX nationals, so a combined weekend would be like a dream race weekend for me.

That is fine if they are so good let them draw their own crowd and get their own tracks. They are so awesome sponsors should be lining up!

That would make everyone happy!

What does it matter if it's done after the bikes race? Why the argument?

i vote to run them on sunday.

many of you may not know but glen helen ran a quad race (itp quadcross) on sunday and that worked out really well.

But as far as running them on the same day before the 250's/450's? hell no.

For those who think quads go slow here is the Practice times for the top 10 Bikes first, then I'll put the quad times below them.

Bikes:

OVERALL BEST LAP TIMES - PRACTICE
POS. # BEST TIME SPEED (MPH)
AMA TOYOTA MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP PRESENTED BY FMF
STEEL CITY RACEWAY - DELMONT, PA
ROUND 12 OF 12 - AUGUST 31, 2008
NAME BIKE SES #1 SES #2 SES #3 SES #4
AMA Motocross Championship
SES #5 SES #6
21ST ANNUAL MONSTER ENERGY/KAWASAK 2008 MOTOCROSS NATIONAL AT STEEL CITY
1 7 James M. Stewart Kawasaki KX450F 2:20.295
2 15 Timmy M. Ferry Kawasaki KX450F 2:23.702
3 40 Joshua R. Hill Yamaha YZ450F 2:24.533
4 60 Broc D. Hepler Yamaha YZ450F 2:25.346
5 26 Michael Byrne Suzuki RM-Z450 2:25.352
6 105 Sean D. Hamblin Yamaha YZ450F 2:25.756
7 29 Andrew T. Short Honda CRF450R 2:26.161
8 66 Jacob Marsack Honda CRF450R 2:26.533
9 702 Jimmy Albertson Honda CRF450R 2:26.861
10 361 Colton Facciotti Yamaha YZ450F 2:26.976

ATV's:

Chad Wienen, 44, Suzuki, 2:26.003.
Dustin Wimmer, 1, Suzuki, 2:26.737.
Josh Creamer, 9, Kawasaki, 2:28.728.
John Natalie, Jr., 13, Can-Am, 2:28.914.
Josh Upperman, 20, Honda, 2:29.066.
Doug Gust, 55, Suzuki, 2:29.724.
Pat Brown, 199, Yamaha, 2:29.849.
Greg Gee, 10, Can-Am, 2:30.017.
Cody Miller, 22, Can-Am, 2:30.395.
Harold Goodman, 708, Honda, 2:31.012.

So yeah obviously the bikes are a couple seconds faster and the top guys on bikes have closer times because the field for pro MX is alot larger, but that's not the point, the point is on the same track and same day the fastest quad guy was a hair quicker than Andrew Short. Not too bad in my book. These are the times from Friday practices I believe because they moved the race to saturday for steel city in 08. Now I know what you're gonna say that these are just practice and that's true I'm not tryin to say quads are faster cause they aren't I'm just sayin they are way faster than most people think and give credit for.

Where does it say they will run before the 250's and 450's? I thought DC said they will run after the bikes have run.

Top ATV racers post lap times as fast or even faster than the top amateur racers at Loretta's. Also, it seems like a majority of negative responses to ATV nationals are comparing local, beer drinking, mud bog, trail riding folks to professional ATV racers.
Personally, I'm not crazy about quads but I might watch the first couple of laps and if it does nothing for me then I'm off to the concession stand or the Pro pits. Additionally, I have always hated running a moto right after the ATV's on hard or intermediate terrain(sand didn't bother me), so I'm thinking they'd run after MX or the track would be worked on. Just my two cents.

Not trying to be a jerk at all..........but

Why are they piggy backing off the bikes? They are not entertaining to watch if you are a fan of DIRTBIKE racing.

Maybe run them on Sunday, but as said above the same day as the pros? HELL NO!!!!!

Last year at Steel City I hung out and watched the Quad ("Couch"") racers - oddly

enough - I enjoyed it. They were hucking that new uphill jump and many were hanging

it out. Jeremy Osborn, local track owner at Briarcliff mx (Ohio) - is a good friend of mine

and a quad guy - and he's a very big man , anyway. he races the quads and loves moto,

so, that being said....I gots to sort of defend the couch crew.

* Look, let's be honest, on a rainy , muddy day, it's pretty cool when they let the quads out for an hour to sling the grease off the track, right ?

** And quads are great at pulling blown - up 4 strokes off tracks. Called it.

I have been making fun of Quads forever. I'm a motocrosser rider/racer since 1974. Two years ago I went to a Quad National at MillCreek to watch a buddy ride. I have to admitt that I was totally impressed with the skills of the Pro classes. They tore up the track and blue grooved it badly but if they were an after Bikes race I would definately stay for the action. They were impressive!
See ya'll at Bud's Creek tomorrow!

It is obvious that alot of guys don't know dick about the quads. I raced bikes for years and hated quads, then a buddy let me take his YFZ-450 out and it was the funnest time on a motocross track I ever had. I went out and bought one the next week. I didn't stop riding bikes, but I did have something to race in between of my bike motos. No, they don't belong on the track with bike, but in this area that was not allowed anyway. Yeah, yeah, I know they screw up the berms. Whoopdy fucking doo, if your track owner knows what he is doing, a few well placed haybales can open up a one groove track to actually help make the bike racing better.
