Keeping feet on is really no more difficult then putting a foot out. It’s commitment and trusting how far you can lean. Seriously work on it for a day and sticking a foot out will start to feel uncomfortable. What impressive is how fast they go into and maintain the speed through the corner.

Of all of my favorite Moto images, dragging a handlebar while railing a corner is my all-time favorite

I like corner shots too but there speed in that one was pretty slow. Emig in 96 was a lot faster in corners. They had alot of weight setup on the front end . The sun tank set up really helped keep the front wheel stuck like glue
In corners.

It’s in slow motion bro 😂. They would dog walk Emig in any corner. You actually have it backwards. Most guys run the bike off the bike higher now to get more weight on the front. They were choppered out in emigs day.

Research the 96 kx250 sr . Emig would beat these guys in any corner. Emig ripped corners quicker than you could blink. No 450 rider ever is even close. Because the
Bikes r too big , long , heavy and there a 4-st. A vid of the best corner pic of all time ,Emig dragging the bars standing up on the yz125 beating Everts at the Des nations. That is cornering. Marty Tripes has more style than these guys. There the current thing but there not that big of a thing. Throw Eli and Chase against McGrath and Emig in 96 on 250 2-st Eli can hardly ride 1 and Chase I just don’t see him beating MC or Emig. They fought a lot harder than the current riders.

I think even Emig and MC would disagree about that one

Man, back when I was a kid, I used to think that you were off your rocker. It seems to have only gotten worse over the years…

It's always nice to hear from a high level rider that hits turns just like Eli does and explain it to us amatuers! If you have time between your next motos, could you possibly relay some info on the proper way to scrub and seat bounce too?

I agree. Plenty of slow guys can whip. But only top level fast guys can corner like that. Whips will still always be cool though.

All I said is feet on isn’t as hard as some think. Obviously you haven’t spent any time trying it. And sorry dude if you are asking how to scrub you aren’t ready 😆

I agree! You see a lot of people on IG throwing whips and scrubs, but none of them can rail a corner like these guys.

Winning is the most impressive. Some young riders care more about jumping than they do cornering smh

Only problem is, is that it happens that bloody quick IRL it’s hard to soak it all in without a super slow mo

Fantastic picture of Emig! Unfortunately, he crashed moments after that photo was taken.

I love big jumps but the fact is jump for show, corner for dough. The guy who corners best usually wins the race. I was always the guy jumping stuff first but I loved doing fast laps while never taking my feet off the pegs but i was never the best at corners. Always been a huge fan of Stefan Everts.

I can corner pretty darn well, but I sure can't whip. Whips are more impressive to me.

I actually took your advice about spending a day at the track not sticking my foot out on the Norcal blue groove. It was crazy that after 3 solid hours of doing that, I literally changed my whole riding style of 25 years. At one point at the end of the day, I put my foot out as I was losing the front and back end in a turn. But I thought of your theory and quickly pulled my leg back to the peg. I then promptly slide my bike out in a corner f'ing up my new graphics, plastics, and pipe up. But you were right about a few hours of practice helping completely change your style on the bike. That's why I asked about scrubs and seatbounce technics. Please share some more 1 day riding technics Master Yoda.

The obvious answer is that a 2 stroke can have a very different cornering technique compared to a 4 stroke.

With the 2 stroke spinning up faster, riders typically pivoted at the apex. This is what gave emig the ability to drag his bars, exiting the apex, for a brief moment as he slowed, pivoted, and then quickly accelerated.

4 strokes are much more tractable and I don’t think the riders pivot nearly as hard because they can control the process through the length of the corner.

With Tomac’s father’s experience in mountain biking, I’m sure ET has gotten a lot of practice riding in clipless pedals with his feet on the pedals. I wonder if this has enabled him to confidently do this in races.

Isn't scrubbing "jump for dough" ?
I think straight rhythm has proved this.

I was at Saddleback Golden State Nationals in '83 watching David Bailey dog his teammate (?Jim Gibson) while refusing to jump any double in a qualifier. I was wondering why he was doing that, but it really showed how much control he had on his racecraft and how much speed he had on everyone everywhere else.
