Do fans of other sports also refer to their favorite sport as "our sport" or is that unique to motocross people?
Also when you share your opinion about another sport, do people question if you play that sport? There's this weird vibe with motocross fans like I feel like you have to prove your fandom by whether or not you race or ride. Oh yeah there's a name for that, gatekeeping.
So....what's with all the gatekeeping? If I run into someone interested in moto I try to be as helpful and encouraging as I can, isn't that what's best for "our sport"?

Plenty of dudes on here that don’t even ride, or haven’t for 10+ years. I talked to a dude for like 20 minutes at Budds creek about all kinds of techy nerd shit and he told me he hasn’t ridden since ‘95!

I think the “our sport” thing comes from being a very niche and small community. I’m loose friends with a few dudes who have qualified for nationals and night shows so it’s pretty cool to feel “connected” to the top of the sport. I think it’s a lot more immersive of a sport to where I can go buy the same bike that won this years SX championship, I can show up to Glen Helen on a Thursday afternoon and ride with the guys I watch on TV, where most NFL fans couldn’t even pry themselves off the couch to go play catch with their son in the yard.

I think there is different tiers. I haven't ridden since I was a kid, but still love watching the sport. I don't think it would be fair for me to call it "our sport" because I am not actively participating in it. But for those who still ride and race, I think they have every right to call it their sport. They are doing more than me to keep the sport growing, (buying bikes, parts, ect, entering in local races, and maybe even pro races).

Huge mass market sports = "the sport"
Smaller niche sports = "our sport"

I have seen this shift in reference to soccer in USA over the past 50 years

whatever, team. That would be like saying "our Dungey".

No, it's not gatekeeping. It's just enthusiasm. Yes, it is good to be helpful and encouraging to someone that has a passing interest in moto.

I watch NFL/MLB/NBA fans say,”We” when they talk about “their team”…a lot.

That’s interesting. Part of me thinks,”Ya know? I didn’t see this guy…this fan…out on the field taking a hit from a 300 pound DE as he tries to get a touchdown?!”

The other part of me thinks,”Well, this dude takes his football pretty damn serious!”
So, it’s all good.
Many of us do the same thing with “our sport”.

At the end of the day, I’m just stoked to see people enjoying the racing.

Generally, when I hear people mention “our sport” and motocross - in the same sentence, it makes me aware that somebody (as most of us do), feels passionately about our hobby/pastime/lifestyle and genuinely cares . And, many of us have been indoctrinated since young, about defending “our sport”, from others that might not think it, a “sport”. It’s a brotherhood, I suppose. Sisterhood, too !

Yeah but that's referring to a team, not the whole sport.

Team fanships are supposed to be "ours." That's the whole point

Most of the fans of stick and ball that I know consider themselves part of the team and use the term “we”. “We scored”, “we won”, “we had a penalty” etc. etc.

How is saying our sport gatekeeping when the word our includes you?

I don’t have a problem with people saying our sport, it just shows they care which I think is cool.

It’s a relatively small amount of people who are even aware that “our sport” exists. As someone who raced his first race over 50 years ago and has cared about the sport ever since, I cannot help but think of it as my sport. I think anyone who rides, or has ever ridden a motorcycle might feel the same way. We are all ambassadors for this two wheeled life, some more so than others.

I thought about this the other day. Most pro stick and ball fans can wear a players jersey and others are ok with it In "Our Sporrt", you wear a riders jersey and you are looked at like a kook. I love it that way.If you are a kid, that's ok.

The reason why it's "Our Sport" is because if my washed up 50+ year old butt was at the gas station on my way to the local track and any top pro happened to pull next to me they would most likely strike up a convo about my bike and riding.

Its our sport because it is tiny.

And the amount of super fans is even smaller. And they all visit vital.

It’s “our sport” because as someone else has said it’s so small and un common, that we are all ambassadors for it in many ways. How many times have you had to explain it, debate it, etc etc to get people to understand it?

I say our sport because we feel connected and feel that we somewhat have a voice. Additionally, what other professional sport allows weekend participants to use the exact same course and facilities as the elite of the sport? Motocross is unique and I love it!
