But now Steve collects a paycheck from Yamaha.

If the kid is talented, he'll be fine.
Steve Matthes never sued Yamaha what are you talking about lmao
Yes he did. Him a and a few other people that worked there back in the day. Over being 1099 and hours worked. Happens more than you think

Most of the actions are not in dispute.
There was an official claim.
MXsports and Brian Deegan asked Brennan why he made the claim, when they had no business to do so within AMA rules.
The claim was retracted.

Before the Brennan video was released, there was concern why the claim was retracted. Most expected either intimidation or incentive. MXsports says there was no intimidation.

After the video, I believe that the AMA did ask him if there any intimidation, and he probably said their wasn’t to preserve the sponsorships that were previously threatened. This is like asking an abused child if they were abused with the abuser in the room. While Brennan is not a little kid, he deserved better.

I believe Brennan.

Steve is far from perfect but where is the criticism of him coming from on this particular issue?

I agree and his other post said that he had conflicting stories about what happened. So what is he supposed to report more than he did?

I'd like to know if Yamaha actually did threaten the dealer. That part is not clear in the video. It comes across as conjecture on the part of Brennan.

If the dealer wasnt threatened, it this whole drama softens a lot.

Deegan has not given a lot of details.

And most people made up their minds after watching the Cooksey video. As if that crack pot has any credibility.

All that said, I can draw a lot of conclusions from all of this if it were clarified HOW the kid knew Yamaha was pressuring his sponsor. Did that actually happen or did he assume it? Because if he assumed it and is passing it off as fact, then I gotta question the other 99% of his version of the story.

Easy enough to offer up a bike, a good non-factory engine, parts for a year and a ride day on the full factory bike.
No issues, no 20 page Vital thread and no hate.

No, that is not the right way. The kid claimed the bike, had the money. The bike should have been secured until Deegan was done with his last race and then given to Brennan. No motor swap. No backdoor deals, just follow the rules. The kid doesnt need to justify to anyone why he wants to claim the bike. Its his choice, so why is that even in question? And for the people getting bent because someone wants their bike, then they shouldnt compete at the event knowing the possibility of getting their bike claimed.

Neither are in the right IF they got involved in the manner which the mob has assumed is absolutely factual.

In fact, if the mob's assumed version is correct, MX Sports and Brian Deegan are both VERY wrong in their actions and the AMA is the spineless org we've always known them to be for allowing boundaries to be crossed.

But with the way people rush to judgement on everything these days, I'd rather wait until I know the facts. Im not blindly trusting a 17 year old kid that has an axe to grind with one of his fellow rivals.

I have found it difficult to find any Steven Matthes vs. Yamaha Motor Co. Found a LOT of other cases against Yamaha Motor Co.

Exactly!

Listened to the interview, the kid seemed mature beyond his years.

The same can't be said of Deegan or Walker!

I agree 100% with you.
But, my point was versed the cluster fuck they created, there was a much better way to handle this if they really did not want that engine out there for public scrutiny.
Star panicked, shit themselves and created a real mess. Star had options, they chose unwisely.

If it were me i would claim all day long. Some of the suspension alone on those bikes could be 10–12 grand
Why do think it’s a cheater bike ? There’s nothing cheating about it… otherwise I agree with what you posted

I suppose it's semantics but the rule exists to prevent factory bikes. As in, amateur racing does not want factory bikes in the sport. As in, factory bikes are not allowed.

This is impossible to enforce by way of tear downs and inspections. Because then you get into a debate on how to define "factory". So this claiming rule exists instead as a means of accomplishing the same goal: preventing factory bikes from competition.

If you're running a factory bike, you're going against the spirit of the rules. Yes, it can be defined as cheating.

That said, there isnt a bike at Loretta's that wouldnt be a steal at $17k. Everyone is breaking the spirit of the rules there, just some more than others. So for that I think the real debate isnt whether the bike is illegal, it's whether it's cheating if EVERYONE is doing it?

There's also the question on whether anyone there with factory support is running a works engine. Which by any definition is indeed cheating.

I have recently been contemplating buying a new Yamaha. After hearing this I’m no longer contemplating.

If this story is indeed true, then I will never buy another Yamaha motorcycle.

Ever think the reason they aren’t saying much is because they know they are wrong and can’t defend their actions? It’s been over a week since this happened. Major players are employed by the biggest media outlet in this sport. If they had a message to get out to paint them in a good light, it would’ve been out there already. You ever think you are questioning the wrong player in this saga?

In my experience, trying to defend yourself from the online mob is pretty fruitless. I've known situations where the right party tried defending themselves publicly, and it only made the situation worse. In hindsight they're better off never saying a word because even the most articulate defense never changes a thing about the outcome nor sways a single person's opinion. The online mob is fickle.

So for that reason, whenever I see one party go silent, I do not automatically assume they are guilty. Sometimes people just realize that the court of public opinion is like a busted tube of toothpaste. The truth becomes pretty irrelevant real fast in matters like these.

And no I do not think Im questioning the wrong player. I think all players need to be questioned before a judgement is made. I know enough people "in the know" that I can ask certain questions about the Deegan's side of this. And trust me Im asking those questions. Whereas I know very little about the Brennan kid. As I said in another thread, he comes across about as credible as one could possibly look. But if there are significant details being left out then I think it's worth looking into.

I do find it odd that he plays this off like he's just a random racer executing a rule. He's not. He's a longtime rival of Haiden Deegan. This wasnt just to ride a factory bike. It was one last way of annoying a fellow rival before that kid went off to the pros to have a long career. All is fair in love and war so I dont really hold it against Brennan if this was some busch league stunt just to needle a rival - but if that was indeed the case, I think it's a relevant part of the story. It makes this whole deal much less criminal and more of just your typical mini racer family back-and-forth drama.

Does that absolve Yamaha if Yamaha was in the wrong? No, not at all.
His first year at the ranch ever was 2021 in 450c and yes he won… I’d hardly call him him a rival of Deegan lol, so there goes that theory

Don't have the AMA Nationals have a rule that you can only use things that the wider public can also buy, or it needs to be something that you're using, working on for R&D. But they said: You can do nothing with that engine there are parts in it you can't buy anywhere. If that is allowed in Mod class than it's OK! Than he raced material probably even faster and better than his Pro team mates? GP-spec bikes where everything is allowed about R&D.

Funny thing is, our sport is going into the direction of Karts where you would almost literately want to steal someones laptop to get all the others info. You guys laughed with Stewart and his "Factory ECU" but the electronics in the bikes these days are so advanced that you don't want to lose that because it has been very expensive to get it this crisp. Last year Brent from the forum here fixed a bike for, the now soon to be EMX250 champ Rick Elzinga. He raced a bone stock bike, only suspension and his own DOMA pipe and the guys of AEO Powersports fixed Vortex ECU and modded that thing towards the fuel they would use and he got 9 points in Hangtown. Just imagine: fuel, suspension, exhaust system and ECU. Just imagine you can do it all and test it all till all pieces fall together... That is hundreds of hours R&D and every build is 40 to 60k? Could that be somewhat be the case Michael Linsay? We're talking about small things like steal bearings that get replaced by ceramic ones to boost torque.

Yeah, something is wrong in amateur racing where there are engine parts that can’t be purchased provided by factory teams (or proxy like Star). That was one of the restrictions on A kit suspension ; it had to be commercially available.

Didn’t read the 14 pages but a claim is a claim. The kid shouldn’t have to explain why he wants to claim it, the rules are the rules. If he has the money, it’s his. Who cares if the engine builder wants to look at the motor, if it’s that top secret, don’t run that bike at a race with that rule. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

I’m not aware of that rule for amateur racing. Where do you see that ?
I know that AMA has the 250 class Factory suspension rule, but other than that, I’m unaware of any rules restricting use of factory parts in amateurs or even AMA pro racing.

I’m not aware of that rule for amateur racing. Where do you see that ? I know that AMA has the 250 class Factory suspension rule...

I know that AMA has the 250 class Factory suspension rule, but other than that, I’m unaware of any rules restricting use of factory parts in amateurs or even AMA pro racing.
If you have a claim rule, then bike rules shouldn't matter, correct?

But let's face it, factory bikes are good because of testing.... a suspension shim costs $1, but renting a track and having a testing team on hand costs thousands!

Pretty crazy, Star have all the parts and testing time and they are not prepared to compromise...

Listening to the story critically, and everything checks out. Sounds 100% plausible. No part of the story seemed exaggerated, and most of it seemed like he was telling 100% exactly what happened. The small amount of speculation seems right too.

I don't feel like going through the 15 pages again, but didn't someone mention something about the transmission?

3. Transmission

a. All motorcycles must be fitted with a transmission as catalogued and sold by the manufacturer of the motorcycle in question.
