Super Interesting Opportunity For an Auto Mechanic

First off this is a paid position for a mechanic, 50-60k per year; with a perk of riding dirt bikes all around the country. Must be willing to relocate to Panama City, Fl.

I am looking for someone to join me in starting a YouTube channel reviewing OHV parks private and public, motocross tracks, training schools and clinics and some races. To make this work you will be a full time paid mechanic for my used car dealership. Primary objective is not necessarily making money but to have fun; money would be nice but not really anticipated. We will drive from location to location but fly home and back. The truck and trailer will not come home on a regular basis. We will be staying in a 48 foot Dutchman Voltage toy hauler. I get the master and you get the garage. All expenses paid on the road. We will normally only travel a couple times a month for the weekend but expect some places, fun places to be a little longer. I'm thinking about leaving on Friday and coming home on Monday.

For the real job. I own a small used car dealership. Your job at the dealership will be

Primarily diagnosing and fixing vehicles to be sold on the car lot.
Buying cars at auction online or in person or from individuals.
Maintaining the car lot and detailing cars to be put on the lot as time allows.
Maintain our bikes.

Auto Skills Required

10 plus years recent auto mechanic experience.
Ability (strength and know how) to change engines and transmissions.
Experience with changing timing chains on modern cars.
Must have your own professional tools and boxes.
In short you should be a professional mechanic.

Computer Skills

Competent with using computers is a must because of the next requirement.
Video Editing would be nice but must be willing to learn.
Edit videos and post.

Personal characteristics

Intermediate or better dirt bike rider
No addictions. I don't want to ride with a stoner or crackhead sorry. I drink socially but please don't be a non functional alcoholic. Obviously I will find out because we will be spending lots of time together.

Benefits 2 Options

1. Contract position pays $60,000 per year and no benefits. paid weekly -1099

2. If you want taxes taken out and to get benefits pay is $50,000 per year.

Health Insurance
Retirement plan matching to 5%
7 days PTO in first year and 14 after first year
1 new dirt bike per year. You will pay for tricking it out to your liking. Sorry I gotta draw the line somewhere. Likely will raffle or give it away after 1 year. So don't spend to much money tricking it out with parts you can not transfer to new bike.
$3000 towards relocation expenses.
We will have to ride together a few times to see if we like each other and you will need to prove your mechanic skills somehow. Professional tools and boxes go a long way towards that.

By the way the shop is new; actually being built now. It will have an AC and Asymmetric lift once complete.

I am doing this for a few reasons. First it will be insanely fun, second it will be a huge tax write off and third I am seriously considering opening an off road resort in the future.

About me. I am 50 years old, married, obviously a business owner. I don't really care how old you are so long as you have 10 years of recent auto mechanic experience. I also own 7 vape shops and this is what is going to fund this little adventure. You can be a smoker but no smoking in the travel trailer but you can vape in it. I guess that is about it.

Contact me and tell me little about you and yourself.

Slow is fine. I like riding some pretty nasty stuff. I just don't want to be responsible for getting someone hurt. Really I just don't want to have to ride their bike up every difficult hill ;-). I really wish I would have said no beginning riders now. Took me years to get comfortable on a dirt bike.

How many cars do you sell per month? I'm a used car dealer and have had a mechanic on the payroll in the past. Somebody could be veeery busy! Hope you find your guy.

I just want to point out you are asking for someone to give up 96hrs for your F-M trips, plus have them work at your used car dealership for $60k/yr. Subtract -10k if they want benefits.

Honestly, I can't say I'd quit my day job to work 100hrs on the weekends being someone's personal bike bitch @50k/yr.

Just my 2 cents

When I was young and single, I would have been all over that job! Definitely not for everyone... but sounds like it could be a cool opportunity for the right person....

Not to many we are very small. Would be stocked to sell 20 cars a month.

This would/could be a fucking dream job for a skilled wrench turner. The killer is what vehicles we're talking about repairing. Domestic is pretty simple but some imports are a freaking nightmare for even "simple" jobs. If I wasn't enjoying retirement so much...I'd be all over this opportunity.

So someone paying for your first class riding trips and bike of your choice is a putout to you? OK. If anyone reading this is interested I am not a d!ck and I will not treat you like my personal bike b!tch. If you are not into going on a couple of trips a month riding dirt bikes in new and interesting places and then telling everyone what you think of it then this is definitely not the opportunity for you. Nor do I think I would like to hangout with you.

Would be great for OP. Doesn't have to work on anything, gets someone to fix and run all his stuff, all at a super low fee. Sounds amazing hope he finds the unicorn lol. All those skills he listed for the dealership, is pretty much running a dealership.

The mechanic will have a huge input on what cars we sell. Ideally Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Volvo, American full size trucks. Not Nissan if it has a CVT transmission. Unless someone knows a cheap source for these transmissions.

We don't have a state income tax so should be $800. You can work book rate in this area for $20 to $30 per hour and hope the shop has enough work to get you your 40 hours and deal with call backs and everything that goes with book rate. Where are you from and how much do mechanics make there?

25 year tech here. I would consider it for 100$/hr for time at the lot and 40$ an hour on the weekends. I’ll bring my own bike and hammock and beer.

Good luck with that pay. I work in a dealer and some of our journeyman techs earn $80k+ a year with union benefits, and the only requirements are training, computer based inspections, and working on cars. They can go home and do whatever they want on the weekends.
Oh and we replace a lot CVT transmissions.

Where do you live? I would expect the favored tech at any shop get about that. The CVT is not the problem the price is. Am I on crack here? Am I asking for to much? Who doesn't want to go ride as much as possible? It is never a chore for me to go ride it is a privilege. The pay is $25 per hour minimum if you are not counting riding. That is damn good money here. Are you guys just trolling me? Next person who complains I want to know what you do for a living and how much you make.

If you had a body shop and were looking for a painter for a few days during the weeks and then ride for the rest I’d have to rent my house out and give it a shot! Sounds like a pretty neat opportunity to hit some tracks one would most likely not go to. Good luck finding that certain someone!

What are you talking about? It is just riding. Is there a failure to communicate here. Fly somewhere go ride for a couple days with cameras on your head and fly back home. Edit some videos together upload them on the clock mind you. Why is everyone looking for the trap. No trap. I am not trying hiring a slave. He does not have to wash my boots or even my bike. He is just a second perspective to make the videos more interesting and for us to both be more safe by not riding alone. I seriously do not understand the negativity. This is a damn good paying mechanics job that is low volume, low stress and guaranteed $1000 per week minimum. If you love to ride and are decent mechanic this is a dream job. And you get to live on the most beautiful beaches in the world. No more big city hustle and bustle. No more customers complaining you screwed their car up. No more favorites in the shop getting all the good jobs with you being lucky to 40 billable hours per week. Or worse yet being in a shop you have to work 80 hours a week to bill 50 and then never have time to ride. Maybe my point of view is just wrong.

So fair question here for all the guys trolling on here....how much money are the B team and privateer mechanics making and how many hours are they working in this sport?

And to the original poster, selling 20 cars a month may be a bigger operation than you think.

You said he must be able to learn video editing skills. That’s work.

So he works 5 days per week as a mechanic, then travel two weekends per month unpaid. And on his two weekends off per month it sounds like you’re going to have him producing Youtube videos.

Trying to own a guy every single day of the year for 50k?

I don’t think you’re realizing how much of a commitment you’re asking of someone.

I’ve got a better idea:
1) Hire a mechanic from down the street for your shop.
2) Go on fly away moto adventures with one of your buddies.

Don’t mix work and play. It gets weird.

Edit: Ok, so I read all of that last post. I’m not questioning your intentions, just seems like a lot to ask of a stranger. Basically be your employee and best friend/travel buddy? Still, I stand by my advice above. Work and friends/play don’t usually mix well.
