We know the phone is listening and then provides content on your searches but also from conversations. If we mention say Gilligan's island out of the blue our phone will have Gilligan's island content soon after. Last night I was scrolling through Craigslist at boats because I was curious with gas prices how many people decided to sell their boats. So I am scrolling through hundreds of boats. My wife walks in and turns on the TV and Holloween is on for a minute and no words were spoken but right then this pops up in the boat ads. Nothing but hundreds of boats before and after but this one Pic. It was pretty strange.

Been going on for a long time. I started a thread about this at least 5 years ago. Was telling my nephew about how
my dog as a puppy was biting everything in sight. For the next 2 weeks, all I saw was dog bite attorneys.
Just crazy!

On my phone I use duck duck go so the ads are limited. I used to use duck duck go on the last computer and also had limited ads. This new computer I haven't sorted out how to get chrome off and just ddg. It's crazy how many adds are all over the screen.

Weird timing on this. My my Android moto Z2 phone that I just had to replace 2 months ago , because it didn't have 5G. So some of my numbers , bookmarks ect , didn't transfer , so I have to fire up my old phone to retrieve them.

This is the 3rd time , it has powered up by itself ( Can't remove the battery on this one ). I open the drawer that I have it in , it's powered on , and the split second black screen pops on and says " Microphone on ".........What the shit!!??

I did some reading up on it , and it doesn't sound uncommon. Numerous people have brought it up , and just shrug it off. Makes me a little un-easy to be honest. So last night I just took it out to my shop and put it in a little metal tool box I had , in case the battery expires and burns my shop down.

Also.......same as mentioned above with the listening thing. Numerous times I'll start getting ads pop up for things I was just discussing with someone else.

iPhones these days have lights at the tops of screens to let you know when its happening, but I'm sure it still happens in the background. I resigned long ago that we're being watched constantly. Maybe not China levels yet, but we'll be there eventually, possibly without even being aware of it at all.

This was the strangest because I was on the craigslist app and there was not one other thing on there but boats, all boats but seconds into turning the TV on and silence on the TV with Micheal Myers standing on a dark street and no dialog and this pops up. Maybe it heard a low Holloween theme in the background and it connected to "skynet"...but on the craigslist app in seconds? Wow
When you get a new phone it asks if it's OK to personalize your phone as it learns your interests and you can say no but I'm not sure it would stop it but I always just yes it anyway. Doh. I just thought this time it was extra weird.

My latest Android download included the little green spy light.

There is also a development mode that supposedly shuts off the mic and camera to all the apps. When I forget to turn it off and try to take a picture it says "cannot operate camera due to security risk". Also, when I try to answer a call with it on the caller cannot hear me.

It’s more likely your phone is communicating with the TV. If you have a modern ‘smart’ TV with a WiFi chip then it’s recording what it displays and sending the data back to to mfg or data clearing house. Even if Halloween is on cable the TV knows what it’s showing. The tv knows that you are on your phone while watching Halloween in the background, so it sends back that data and then sells an ad spot through a programmatic buyer that pays to put that particular ad on your phone.

“The phone is listening to me” is a common suspicion, but devices can collate data from multiple different devices.

It's actually outrageous that these companies get away with this shit. It should be illegal.

Deeds......just a suggestion , but I picked up this little gem about 2 years ago. I slapped a 256gb card in there ( I have around 80,000 songs and hundred of albums and discographies ) It not only stores 5 X the music my phone did , but the sound quality is freakin' amazing!! Blows even my new phone away! You hear things in songs you didn't hear before. It has blue tooth as well. I connect to my home stereo and it's awesome. I get about two full days of playing without a recharge. Also.....huge plus for me when listening to music , I hate message interruptions , or phone calls ect.....

If this thing ever goes bad , I'll replace it in a heartbeat! Just an FYI....

Not google eavesdropping, but pretty interesting. In the early days of cell phones, mid eighties as I recall. It was not uncommon in Corpus Christi, Tx to pick your phone up to make a call and hear people talking.

Buddy of mine got listen to the same guy many times. He would call his wife or his girlfriend and talk about how bad things were going for him. This was back in the Texas oil bust days, lots of oil patch guys went broke. Anyway my buddy Jim that I worked with would give us updates every morning on this guys train wreck of a life.

To make a long story short, they guy that his phone would bleed over had lost is business, filed for bankruptcy, big house in River Canyon subdivision west of Corpus was being foreclosed on. He was stone broke and both is wife and girlfriend were pregnant. Along with he was behind on child support from first wife.

Jim had the timing in this down on this guy to eavesdrop. Jim said between 3:45 and 4:00 the guy was calling someone to complain. There was a lot more to the story about the guy calling his GF trying to get a hook up for sex etc.

Now people just post it on Facebook!

Sounds like the old "party line days".
When we were kids at the ranch, it was a given during nights on weekends that we would get a phone show between a woman and her cheating husband.

If you don't know what a party line is... I guess look it up.

Thanks man definitely gonna look into that. I’m tired of my phone bill, tired of finding myself zombie’d on it. Tired of the time it takes away from life. Time to take it back to the simpler days. Just make sure to page me when there’s a good thread. Hahaha

Yeah, when I was a kid in Oklahoma, we had a party line for a while when we moved into a new house in the country. We didn’t have it for long and we got a private line. The early days of cell phones in South Texas was a hoot. You would try to make a call and end up talking to someone you didn’t know and one lady told me not to ever call her again. Things are a lot different in this day and time. Now we have Google, Alexa etc to deal with.

My wife is convinced Alexa is the worst at listening.

I might have you at the line.
Not sure, but I'll be damn close.

My wife tells all her friends and family what her plans are and assumes she told me.
Facebook is the Devil.

A friend of mine told me his wife was talking to her sister on the phone while watching the same tv show, both on direct tv and when it went to a commercial, it showed them different commercials, based on their interests. This is in the same small town.

At the dinner table last night we were discussing my son’s plans for college next year. He’s in the process of narrowing his list down. My phone was on the table. Conversation ends, I go about my business opening FB and it was literally loaded with ads from the schools we had just talked about.

I’m surprised that anyone is surprised by this . Privacy was dead in the water a decade ago .
