I’m sure quite a few of you have had this happen. I did this a few weeks ago and am debating whether to get surgery or try to let it heal on its own. I have no pain but it feels very unstable especially if I raise my arm above my shoulder, like it could pop out again. Any advice is welcomed.

Let mine go, one year later it ripped while racing and left me with many serious injuries. Almost two weeks in icu, broken jaw , rib, 4 broken vert in neck, TBI , compressed artery and many bills. Which I would have looked into surgery the first time .

Get it fixed asap. More than likely bigger problems will arise later. Trust me...

Best thing I ever done was have a shoulder reconstruction. Kicking myself I waited 6 years.
So many dislocations and pain during those years.
It just keeps getting worse and worse.

Instability may be due to a labral tear (slap tear). Get an mri

Which one do you have? They are two completely different injuries.

edit: evidently you dislocated it based on you stating it is popping out

It might quit hurting but it will always be unstable. Skidlid nailed it.

Get a MRI to see if you have any tears. If you don’t have tears, you don’t need surgery. I had 8 dislocations and mine was all tore up. I wish I got it fixed sooner.

Age also depends, if you are younger you might be able to do PT and build it back. If you are older (I was 33ish when I got surgery), I tried working out and it didn’t help.

Lots of factors to take into consideration.

I dislocated one in 2007, did the other one in 2010, never had any issues after that I was careful for like 5-6 weeks did some rehabs nd was back to riding and anything else, then last fall fell and tore rotator cuff on right one had surgery healed very well and has been great other then I gets stiff and sore when I do alot still.

Last Sunday ate shit and dislocated my left one again that I did in 2007, this time took 5 hours and two hospital to get it back in, wanna talk about miserable, but now 5 days later doing way better most swelling has gone down and I got more movement back already, if I move it certain way it feels weird or cracks.

I’m gonna give it till middle end of next week and hoping it’s ok and I can do some good exercises rehab it and be good to go in a month or so, or this time next week it won’t be any better and I’ll have to get a mri and freaking surgery again, damnit lol.

I did a type 3 ac separation, regret not getting surgery, took forever to heal and I’m still probably only 90% strength of what it was and it’s been like 8 years.

I did mine skateboarding on the vert ramp.... pretty painful. Waited a few weeks to get into dr. Ligaments had withered away and nothing to reattach... they had to take dacron mesh from my rib cage up and staple to the collarbone....eventually this mesh grew something (lol) which stabilizes it to this day. I did race for years afterwards, no shoulder issues, but effing weak and unstable for along time.

Good luck man, I suggest getting it looked into .

I got a bankart repair on my left one. Still prone to dislocating unfortunately. I would get an mri and see what you’re dealing with for sure.

Did that in tandem also completely destroy the rotator cuff & labrum?

Just get it fixed. Letting it heal on its own is gonna hold you back. I had a separated should back in 18, now and hard yank or decent hit makes it ache and lose strength for 2 weeks or so.

I dislocated mine 6 times. It finally got to the point where the joint was so weak it was in danger of falling out if I tried to do a pull up. I finally got it fixed after I dislocated it from a hard landing - didn't even crash!
The surgery was the best thing for me, but it may not be right for you. Definitely see a doctor or two and get their recommendations.

Like many have stated, age and severity of the dislocation, I have had 20 total dislocations between the 2, 1 i had to have a complete tune up on, the other was just tons of therapy , now a couple weeks ago I thought i did it again, but it ended up breaking in 2 spots on the head of the humorous and 1 crack in the joint.....

I would get an MRI and make damn sure you take care of it, I did not when i was younger and now at 48 wish to hell i would have

Listen to those saying to get it taken care of, and do so before you have more dislocations causing more damage if it is the labrum. I dislocated my shoulder cycling due to getting hit by a car in Dec 2021. Since then I'd guess it has come out 20 times (I know it sounds like I'm exaggerating, but it has just gotten progressively worse to the point it comes out if I lift my arm above my head wrong). I put off surgery due to being away for the spring semester in college and wanting to wait till summer, but now I have about a 180° tear of the labrum and they will have to do the Laterjet surgery to fix it, which involves a bone graft.

Initially dislocated mine in 1981, blew it out hundreds of times for 10 years. That kept me out of racing until it was repaired in 1992. All the PWC were then sold! Haha It's been great until the last few weeks.

Dislocated mine a dozen years ago. Did no PT. I just let it heal up by my side for a couple months. Then began doing strength work progressively over time. Basically, allowed the capsule to heal in a shortened fashion. Worked so far.

Doc told me the surgery is mainly for aesthetics. I didnt get surgery and have had zero problems. Just have a bump on my shoulder.

Edit I only separated my shoulder.
