Hey All,
I'm debating on a 2022 or waiting on a 2023 CRF250R.

Given the last gen motor had issues in it's first year (cams melting into the head), I'm curious if there are any issues with the current generation in it's first year.

For the record, I'm not disparaging the red bikes and I haven't heard/read anything.

How many hours do you have?
At what level are you riding?
What issues have you had, if any?

Thanks!

Got my CRF250R 22 last September, currently have around 15 hours on it, C local rider.

The only issue I had with my bike is the oil seal around the clutch pivot leaked oil badly around 2 hours, nothing else.

I've had my 22 since late September and had zero issues. No leaks anywhere from the engine, forks, shock. Currently sitting around 17 hours. I've been really impressed with this generation. The airbox design also seems to make it nearly impossible for any dirt to bypass into the intake. But as with any bike brand, routine maintenance is everything.

2018 had an issue with cams eating the head? Funny so did my 2022.

That was the only thing we could come up with as a possible cause other than poor assembly or other manufacturing issue. I don’t remember it being at redline though. Other bikes have a tip over sensor to prevent that though.

My 16 kx250f and 17 yz450f both stayed running on their sides after a crash. I was lucky to be able to turn them off within a few seconds. Iv'e seen plenty of bikes stay running while on their side.

Was your bike pegged on the limiter while on its side? It doesn't take long for the pick up to be starved of oil.

I don't remember it being pinned. If it was it was similar to what has happened to every bike I have owned including a 2019 CRF 250RX. None of those bikes had any issues. My best guess is the cap was torqued too tight from the factory.

The bottom line is all manufacturers occasionally ship out a problem bike. The question is what kind of help do they give when it happens? My experience with Honda is they give no support whatsoever, and I am not the first (or last) person to experience that.

The head/cam design is nearly identical to the 2018-2021 so it should have similar durability.

Is it safe to assume you ran it up the chain beyond the dealer level?
How many hours was on your bike ?
Did you repair it ?

Press came out last week on the new bikes but I wasn't able to find any real detail as to what changed.

Are there known changes between the two?

I would assume there wont be much change.

I have a few rev happy buddies that are over 20 hours. So far so good.

I compared a bunch of major component part numbers between the '22 and '23 and everything I checked is the same.
Head, cam, cylinder, piston, crank, ECU, shock, fork, clamps, linkage, frame, swingarm, clutch basket/hub/pressure plate, transmission main and counter shafts (di not check gears) and a few others.
I work for a Honda dealer and the '23 250R parts page was just added.
I own a '22 but not a ton of hours on it and I'm a slower vet rider so I don't put much stress on a bike but no issues so far.

Yes I pushed at Honda in California and it took forever (over a month) for them to finally say no help. My dealer offered me 15% off on parts (which was higher than RMATV pricing). I had about 15 hours on the bike when it started acting up. I was going to fix it and sell it but someone wanted it so I sold it as is. He had it running a week later with the bad parts replaced. I have not heard from him so I don't know how much he has ridden it or if it has had any issues.

I didn't read the actual release but the article said 2023 was carryover for all mechanical parts. I thought they would at least update the suspension valving but it sounds like they did not.

Thank you for the diligence and response!

Good to know and it seems like buying a 22 might make sense.

Would you be able to say more about the valving?

FWIW, I've got a 21 right now and while the shock is close to being all the way hard on compression/rebound (with a heavier spring) I love the stock suspension.

Regarding suspension / valving...never rode one but mag reviews were not liking the fork setup.

Stock suspension valving shouldn't steer you away from a certain bike, if everything else is solid. It can be fixed by sending it out to a suspension tuner.

If you have a heavier spring in the rear and need to run full stiff on compression, it sounds like you need to revalve any bike you buy.

how much do you weigh?

For me ~190 lbs the suspension was harsh. It deflected on bigger hits and didn’t have enough hold up. I could not get it to use much of the travel either. I think the base valve and/or spring rates are way too soft but some of the harshness is probably in the frame. It was terrible in sand whoops where I would expect a stiff bike to be good.

I have 29 hours on my 22 .At 5 hours installed a XPR tuned vortex & yosh exhaust. T-4 fuel.
At 19 hours I installed the XPR HC piston & cam.
The 22 head oils the cams very differently than the previous gen bike.Cams are different also.

My stock piston was in great shape .The replacement was only needed due to cam/ piston combo.
I seen no wear that was of any concern. It only took 3 seconds with the flex hone to de-glase cylinder.
Based on what i seen at 19 hours. Around 55 hours ish I will replace piston, rings & cam chain
Check crank play. Inspect cam journals ect.
I'm due for a clutch. I think rekluse has the manual plate kit for these now.

Chad at XPR says heat is the worst enemy to these motors. I'm dong 3-4 hours on oil , Oil filter every other change.& keeping an eye on coolant ect.
The air filter gets dirtier quicker Than other bikes.
We've had a wet spring so it's been ridden in heavy dirt , with deep till putting a heavy load on motor . So far so good.

First 10 hours was the Honda recommended in manual.
Since then RedLine 10-30. Used it for years. A buddy is a rep & get it cheap through him. But would use it none the less.
Redline water wetter is a great product also.

It's the second generation of that dual cam engine, I wouldn't be worried about it. Just change your oil, make sure your air filter is clean and clipped in correctly, and ride the thing.

Bike has been perfect. Under 10 hours vet rider but can still rip. I really like the suspension and I’m only 149 pounds.
Get it you will love it !
