Sorry for reviving an old thread. I'm getting total knee replacement April 28th. I've been building a 2007 CRF 250r and have another one to build. Dying to ride again, its been at least 10 years. Glad to see there's still hope to ride again. I'm a little on the younger scale for getting this, I'm 43.
Hey man - I just had my left knee replaced (total) back in Nov 2021. It sucks for a few weeks, but once you're home, the in home care will be stretching the shit out of you. You need to take it seriously and deal with the pain while they work you, pop a pain med 1/2 hour or so before they arrive. After a few weeks of in home care, you should be attending physical therapy outside your home. I did PT for almost 3 months and took every second 110% seriously. I still have weird aches, a bit of clicking in the knee, but already i can walk with zero pain, and for 2 weeks i've been running at 5.5mph on the treadmill for 30 min straight. I want to race this season, but i feel it's best to build my strength this season, so a lot of time in the gym doing legs, like leg day every day! Then, i'll hit the track once a week and be sure i feel comfortable. So hoping to get on the track by May this year, but again just to ride it and stay in shape, no racing.

I'm also 40! We have the benefit to heal much quicker then our older folks here, but still dont be lazy, take it seriously i think everyone can agree with that.

Also be sure to get the machine bender, you strap your leg in it with a remote and it auto bends your knee at certain degrees. You'll want to be at 120 degrees once you're done with it.

PM me with any other questions or concerns! Good LUCK man!

Following this thread. My right femur ordeal is healing good. Cool I knew my left knee would be a problem when I started to walk around again, and it is. It swells up and fluid gathers around my ankle after being upright for a few hours. It's shot and needs replacing but I'm hesitant since I'm still on anti-biotics from the femur infection. Plus I hear varying stories about recovery, some say 6-8 weeks and it felt great, some say months later it still sucks. I wish I knew what I was in for. I know it sucks ass like it is.

It's wobbly as a mofo did your guys tighten up after the replacement ? I thought I could strengthen and tighten it up by walking and doing exercises, but it seem to be getting worse

Saw doc.

Said it all appears normal and not too angry looking. Normal swelling. He did prescribe some Celebrex (NSAID) and more of an arthritis inflammatory to reduce some of the knee whack/bone pain.

To Sumdood, I don't regret doing it. I am just one of those OCD people who likes to have a plan.
"How much will it hurt, for how long? and then what?"

With this, everyone is totally different. IMO, every doc should just say "It'll be a year before you're 100%" and that's a more clear target. Just plan on that, anything sooner is bonus. The pain/discomfort comes and goes.

Biggest issue for me is learning to slow down (everything...getting up, walking, moving) because as anyone who knows me will agree, I am a pretty WFO person.

OK, back into hiding until ML512 replies to my emails

Bye

and thanks

Glad to hear it's on track and you didn't jack anything up worse. If I stop every 4 or 5 hours, elevate and ice my knee and ankle for 30-45 minutes it helps a LOT. If I'm upright and or walking around longer than that my ankle and calf balloon up. The ortho said my knee gets so swollen it's like having a tourniquet and it stops the circulation. I'm really not looking forward to another surgery so I'm going to just deal with it for awhile longer. It's ok though, could be worse. Cool Good luck man !

Been jumping through all the surgery hoops and will be Going under the knife (and other tools) and going full titanium knee on April 11

In the past physical therapy wants to go snails pace slow taking forever and I am usually go WFO progressing along much faster than they want to go. Will see how it goes this time.

Hey Lumpy! I am 8 months post surgery and will be on the track next week. It feels amazing, but that's also me spending 3 months at therapy hitting it hard, and 4 months (ongoing) in the gym at least 4 days a week working the shit out of my legs, along with full-body workouts. I feel fine and ready to ride, but that may not be the case for you. My doctor also says "never again" for like anything, but therapists say i can do it - it's an insurance claim they want to avoid.

So yeah 8 months since surgery i'm ready - 120/122.

Good luck!

Please, do not flame and only respond if you have had a knee replacement or you are a doctor.
Thanks

18 months since left knee replaced and have had problems after 5 weeks, been to see surgeon regularly, the last thing they tried was a manipulation, which again did not help. Surgeon has since retired and I am now someone else’s problem (wonders of UK NHS), next appt is February 🤬🤬🤬. For the past few weeks right knee has started with that same old pain I remember, no idea what to do next, going to see my Doc soon to see what they say.

Last worked in January 2021 and have since been ‘medically retired’ at 56😮😮

It has been a little over 6 months on mine and at the MXoN was able to bend it enough to ride my mountain bike up to the track. Huge accomplishment in the right direction!

I received a 1/2 knee replacement and was using the stairs at a very fast pace within three weeks. The entire process ended up being a total no brainer. That being said, Indy being one of the sports capitals of the world it simultaneously has some of the best surgeons in the world.

I've had a right hip and a left knee replacement. Both done in 2019. I've had no issues that keep me off the bike. Just do your therapy and things will be fine. I didn't get the replacements to keep me from doing any activities, but rather to make life more comfortable and to be able to continue doing anything I want to do.

Years ago this would not have been the case.. but with modern technology I say if things are hurting and keeping you from enjoying life, including dirt bikes, then get the things fixed and get busy living.

For the record, that was my 7th left knee surgery. I put it off for years.. wish I had done the replacement earlier.

Follow the PT get the machine that circulates ice water around the knee as ice is your friend also get a CPM machine and keep stretching it. Scar tissue will go and if you don't work it your knee can get stiff. Positive side is it doesn't hurt in cold weather.

Its interesting on the right hip, left knee thing. I too have had right hip replacement surgery (was fantastic). I also have a left knee problem due to an injury. Seems like most MX'ers I know that have had some kind of hip replacement, have had either just their right hip, or both hips replaced. Don't know anyone that has just had a left hip replacement only. Might be someone out there, but I've never met anyone or heard of it. Makes me wonder if kicking a dirt bike to start it for literally decades has something to do with it.

I tore up my left knee playing basketball for the Air Force... a long time ago.. I really think my right hip was affected by favoring my knee all those years. I developed osteoarthritis.. basically wore it out. My left hip is ready now, as well. Getting old is getting old already. Just thankful for modern technology and joint replacement. Smile
