As per the title what's going on? Just received a message from a friend racing with me next weekend, local club is saying that 3 types of fox helmets will no longer be accepted at scrutineering following an ACU ruling?

Fox V3
Fox V3RS
Fox V4

Fox V3
Fox V3RS
Fox V4
It might be due to which standard they are labeled with

I know we don’t accept dot ratings down here for racing

Some of those have ECE 22.05. How ever some brands do sell different models in US and EU that doenst follow same certifications.

Just got to the bottom of it, yeah you guys are correct, ithey have not been approved by the ACU yet but Fox, their importer and the ACU are working on it now.

What a cluster fud, you would assume all this would of been done at the beginning?

What makes it more strange is that the new V3 has been around for a few years.

The V4 was discontinued quite some time ago so if anyone is still wearing one, it might be time for an upgrade anyway...

I saw the post from Wakes Colne when the news dropped Saturday afternoon- lovely timing for those racing.

Pinged the ACU an email for clarification as I said it was a bit off that they hadn’t announced anything officially as an organisation. Also asked for more details regarding the failed models as the original V3 was released in ‘05 so it’s a poor state of affairs if the has been an issue for that long.

Even the current shape V3 has been around for nearly 3 years, so how they’ve not been tested and are sold with an ACU approved sticker is beyond me.

Anyway, here’s the response I got from the ACU- didn’t answer any questions directly, but gives a bit more detail;

“Further to our conversations between Fox and Andy Summers, ACU Technical Consultation Off Road, and following a meeting they all participated in last week, the ACU have established that the Fox V3, V3RS and V4 Helmets have not been approved by the ACU.

These helmets should not be used at ACU events until they are tested and approved by the ACU. Fox is aware of this issue and the current position.

We hope to start the testing procedure with the ACU nominated testing house once the helmets are received from Fox.”

Have these organization bodies seen the hits Forkner took this year? They look solid to me.

I always think back to Ping and the "secret" helmet analysis that (I think) TLD did. He said people wouldn't believe how poorly some of the top name brands faired, and that he would only trust wearing a TLD helmet, as well as two other brands... Fox V3 being one of them. I wish he would tell us the whole story, but I assume he's restricted under an NDA. Industry secrets regarding safety drive me crazy.

Anyway, I went head first into a tree going about 30 mph wearing a V3 last year. Cracked the lid, but my head is no dumber than before, thankfully. I immediately bought another one.

Is this simply a matter of failing to file the right paperwork, or something more?

Still, would you ride with something if you were Ping and didn't trust it, payroll or not at his age? No major bell ringers but I own 3 TLD lids from the old GP air to an SE4 and a more modern GP lid. Currently waiting on my Venom lid if ot would ever arrive.

Exactly… which means he’s not on Fox’s payroll or the other helmet he said ranked high in the test. Surely, the TLD choice could be perceived as biased, but why would he suggest two other helmets? He wore a V3 is a gear test a little while back, so he stood by his word on it.

I stand corrected. Bell has always made great helmets, makes sense.
