How bad was the 04 RMZ/KX 250f really ?

All I remember is they like to eat valves. New top end all the time with A riders. BUT that was also the first year of Suzuki and Kawi riders on that bike. Trying to ride those 4 strokes like a 2 stroke wasn't good on the engines. They weren't built strong enough yet.

A 2004 KX250F is my latest build. Was my actual bike I raced on as a kid: (still in progress)



Had no issues when raced on them back then, not planning on racing or even riding this one much. Just restoring it to how it was when I had it back in 04/05. (including updating valves/head) Always loved the bike!

I have a friend who parted several out. I think the frames went on his scrap metal trailer, but I will find out. I see them parted out all the time on facebook marketplace/craigslist

PC actually had to brace the bottom end of their race bikes to hold them together. Mitch talks about it in a podcast, very cool little piece moto history.

I love that bar pad. I still have that one left and don't use it so it stays nice.

My 2004 YZ250f was great. There was a “fix” for the pre SSS forks that was a big improvement.

Generally I’d say a YZF. Newer the better for performance. All good (for a high performance race bike) for reliability.

We rebuilt one for a customer back around 2011ish, it was a nightmare of findings when it was disassembled: needed a head, the cases were cracked and needed replaced (they had updated cases), crankshaft, and it goes on and on. It was expensive.

Sounds more like someone didn’t take care of it rather than the bikes problem.
