Moates’ win at Carlsbad in 1980 was described as the biggest upset in motocross history.
Definitely a moto legend. He raced in Australia from 1982-86.

Here’s Marty Moates in action at an Australian SX in 82:

He was a very nice man..he lived and raced in Australia for a few years..met him when I was 17 and was attending a school he conducted at Broadford Victoria..5 day school...first night he had a projector and screen and played the wide world of sports coverage of the usgp he won...it was 1983 when this was happening..we were all awe struck...he was so humble, never cocky and so motivational...I had the time of my life that week...I remember I had badly leaking fork seals in my cr 125...he pulled my forks apart, cleaned them out and showed me how to cut the spring in the seal to make them stop leaking...man he went the extra mile.
And when I would see him at races afterwards.. he would always take time to say hi and ask how I was going.
A true gentleman ...and when I read about his tragic passing...I dont mind admitting I cried my eyes out.
Marty Moates was a legend!

He was part of the early rapid evolution of American motocross, a true gentleman, part of the very early No Fear brand, and much, much more. Definitely a legend...I was pretty shaken by his passing as well...like our beloved OCScottie, Marty suffered from chronic unmanageable pain from this beautiful, terrible sport that just became too much. He definitely deserves HoF status!!!

If anyone on this board ever finds him/herself in San Diego, take a trip to the old stomping grounds at Carlsbad and just walk around. It's a business park now, with buildings everywhere, but there are still traces of the start area and the first turn. There are ghosts there.

Not in California any longer, thankfully, but I'd much rather remember it the way it was.
Remember the MX road racing course on the way in to the place ??
Wednesday nights there were a blast.

Same with Saddleback.
Want to remember it the way it was.
And...
Some track needs to replicate that start
Long uphill start, left turn, then...
The Banzai hill freefall.
(They never let us 125's hit that, we had to ride around)

RIP MM

I stopped by there when I was home over the holidays. I hadn't been to the track since probably 1990/1991, so I couldn't remember what was where, but I'm pretty sure I found part of the start straight. I'd like to go back when the memorial opens, the rendering overlooking the track looks cool.

I saw the race working for for a farmer that bought my parents farm. The race was super exciting we where both yelling at the tv go Marty . No one expected Marty to win on a privateer bike. He probably fought harder than any racer to win that one. Lop is a small shop in Chicago. DGY, TUF racing, etc some more iL. Race teams.
