Hold up, whats going on in this thread is blowing my mind. I thought that was every kids dream since he threw a leg over a bike, to be on a factory ride. Even for one round why wouldn't that be worth it? I am by no means a pro nor can I even relate, but damn I feel like if you would have an opportunity to do that you would be crazy to turn it down. No disrespect at all just genuinely curious. Please educate me brothers!

Fill in ride is to see how you would do on better equipment. Would you risk losing your sponsorship money for a one off (or a few) races on a bike you’re not used to? I’m honestly surprised how many people do fill ins, more risk than reward. Do crappy on a “better” bike and you will be judged more, even if the bike is better, you just haven’t had time to get comfortable on it

I agree, especially for the guys riding aluminum frames. Even if his sponsors were cool with it (which I highly doubt), there's no way Karnow qualifies for the main on a steel frame after 2 days of riding it.

It's not even a factory bike, it's all good stuff but not factory like they were in the past. These guys are getting a bunch of money from there own sponsors and it's not worth not being able to represent them for a weekend

Per an MXA article mid 1980s JoJo Keller got a one ride fill in on David Baileys HRC 500. After riding it he asked Bailey if the bike is slow.

Hate to be a Debbie downer but like some already mentioned. RM ATVMC are not factory anymore.

And they're completely nuts to be offering a one race deal to other privateers, i'd go as far as it's kinda disrespectful.

Well i think he made the right choice, the opportunity to hook up with Forrest Butler for winning the LCQ is much less appealing then hooking up with the OF girl. 😂

I am not sure what kind of money was offered with a one-race fill-in ride, but Karnow was just asking for Venmo/PayPal donations to fund his racing a little over a week ago. I understand he has sponsor obligations and the fact that it would be a steel frame bike, but I feel like you if turn a team down once, you will never get the offer again? Also with it now being out there for all the other teams to see, does he get an opportunity like this again? Maybe JS81 or another pro who was offered this deal on vital can explain a little more. With the industry being as small as it is and everyone fairly close, seems like you're potentially burning a bridge before it's built.

But a one race fill in offer a day before press day seems like RM dropped the ball on this.

I think he turned it down because it's only one race and he already had commitments to personal sponsors and a "title" sponsor for the weekend. Getting on a strange bike (no matter how good) and trying to race with the best in the world with basically zero time to practice doesn't make a lot of sense. If it was the rest of the season or even 3-4 races I think he and others would have for sure jumped at the chance.

Thinking outside the box, this one-off ride would really put Logan’s name on the map! Everybody is watching. And next week when he’s back on his regular ride, fans are looking to see if he gets a better result, or worse.

In a round-about way, long term would give his original sponsors more publicity than him just sticking with the normal programme.

sounds like they are trying to full fill a contract obligation of having X amount of riders on the track.

unfortunately a lot of the top privateers have deals with salaries coming from sponsors. if it was a multi race deal it might work, ala Chisholms deal. but to drop for 1 round it doesnt work for a lot of guys.

then there is an issue of the bike. if you jump on it and its setup doesnt work for you at all then you'll end up doing worse.

hopefully someone takes it that could use the notoriety

I would guess they aren’t offered any/much money. Fill in rides usually don’t.
