would you go to a full electric supercross

Edited Date/Time 3/23/2022 8:27pm
would the lack of noise stop you going?

I think it would for me, I have tried to watch Formula E and Moto E and both are boring compared to ICE engine racing,

I tried to get into Formula E and it wasn't for me. Tried watching Extreme E because they have a cool concept, but it's not for me. I did find it better than Formula E.

Would bikes keep my interest? Probably not.

The problem with asking a question like this, on a board like this is that you’ll only get responses from ‘core’ moto fans who love the way it is and few are open to anything different.

They’ll say things like “that would be the end of it for me” and “the sport will die off”, without realising that things do change, people do come and go and for every fan that walks away, another one will walk in.

There’s plenty of entertainment to be had and great racing to be witnessed on machinery that doesn’t have an engine or make a noise (see my photos)

It may not be for some people- that’s ok, but dont be under the illusion that once it stops being what it is right now, that it will cease to exist.

If electric bikes mean riding becomes more accessible, that accessibility brings more riders. More riders mean more fans. More fans means more bums on seats.
More buns on seats means more money. Going electric could make this sport bigger than ever.

Yes I’d go to an all electric SX. And I’d enjoy it all the same.

I have yet to see bmx or mtb race sell out a 50k seat stadium , let alone pull 35k plus for 17 rounds ,

I see electric bikes selling well for the public, esp in noise sensitive areas , as e mtb’s do now , but still does not make a Professional race series that people want to attend

I hadn’t seen that before , . But seems rather tame compared to rally x and off road trucks

Personally I think they should have their own series. What better way to grow the sport than having another series to compete in? More rides, more jobs, different brand sponsorships, etc.

I don't see why they need to be included with the current series. After all, they have their own class at Loretta's.

I don't think it's a bad thing, it's just different.

Knock me for saying it. The smell of race fuel exhaust and the sound of the engines are a huge part of the experience for me. To be perfectly honest, I really miss the 2-stroke era....the 4-strokes just don't have as much excitement. ..and it certainly took more skill to ride a 2-stroke properly.

No sound, no fumes. I might as well be watching drone racing. SX is already "gymnastics" with an engine. They practice all week long on the tracks that hold no surprises and no challenges.

I expect to lose interest at the point they go electric. It will be too far from what it was and what I grew up with.

Downvote away. I don't give a crap.

I personally would love it…the SLC supercross was so loud that it was annoying. I took my wife and kids to their first supercross and I couldn’t hear any of their questions during the race, almost impossible to communicate. Maybe Im getting old and grumpy, it the noise almost ruined the race for me. I’d of enjoyed it way more if they were on ebikes…I realize I’ll be in the minority around here in that opinion.

If you don’t leave with mild carbon monoxide poisoning, did you even go to the race?

Everyone will say no.
But in 2035 when its illegal to sell ice vehicles and all motorsport will be electric motors.
I bet every1 will still be watching it.
Who has ever been somewhere they are not suppose to be on there fone. But has watched sx or mx with there phone on mute. I know i have coz i still want to see what happens and hearing it or not doesnt matter.

IS THERE even a MTB or BMX race in a 50k seat stadium? Or a 17 round series? I don’t think either exist.

My point being though that every ‘sport’ or form of entertainment has the ability to attract fans. It doesn’t have to have an engine and noise and smells.
It needs to be accessible and exciting and fun.
Wrongly some people think if you lose the noise and smell then it will die. That’s simply not the case.
You may walk away- that’s your prerogative, but someone will walk in to replace you.
You’re looking at a different target market. You’ve got MTB, then people get involved in E-MTB, then they might progress on to E-MX.

I just assume you will have a DJ blasting and more announcer. The start is about the only engine noise that is cool with 20+ bikes. Once the race is going it’s just drone bike noise

I think the sport will go that way whether we like it or not. Current promotors and the AMA aren't going to pass up on what will be a multimillion dollar market because the core fans miss the smell of premix. Ebikes will see more motocross tracks open, will see tracks opening closer to urban areas, might make riding more affordable in the future, will see changes to accessibility (ebikes make a rental model at tracks easier), and will ultimately bring more people to the sport.

If we still want to watch top level SX racing in 10-20 years time the answer is of course.

If you think the current OEMs are going to be racing ICE bikes with multimillion dollar/euro budgets in 10-20 years time, you're high and living outside reality.

With an e-bike, I could trail ride 100 metres from my front door.

I could moto 1 mile away. I could moto 2 miles away and I could moto 8 miles away.

All four of these places are not viable options on ICE bikes.

How many other people around the world have a situation similar to mine? And if an E-bike is a viable option will buy one?

I remember people saying they would never attend a race again around 2005 when 4 strokes came out....

...they've missed a lot of good racing over those years.

Oh well!

The only long term potential issue is if the tree huggers push to ban ICE vehicles, at which point you wouldnt be able to have both. It might be 10-20 years down the road but there is an agenda here and at some point the bikes we love will most likely be considered illegal to "save the environment".

It won’t matter for most of us, kids now are riding on electric KTM’s, they will probably spend most of their life on electric bikes and it will be the new normal.
I grew up riding 2 strokes (and still do) but tons of younger people have 0 interest in riding them.

Nope! By 2035 battery powered vehicles won’t be as acceptable either, due to the strip mining for the materials for the batteries among other things. As people start to understand all of the mining involved in Ev’s and how destructive it is to the environment ideas will change again. Most of the cobalt in batteries comes from the Congo and they have no pollution controls and kids that are dying from cobalt exposure from working in the mines. I also think it will be much harder to put the necessary infrastructure in place than most people think to support Ev’s. Besides how many people are going to be able to afford to buy new electric vehicles that are even more expensive than ice vehicles in about 10 years, especially with the inflation we are seeing, at this point a lot of people are living check to check and more worried about putting food on the table.

There aren't going to be batteries for cars, bikes, and everything else. People need to wake up to the nonsense that's being pushed and fast. You thought "Russia" caused gas prices to increase, wait til you see what happens to precious metals which aren't controlled by USA. Sorry, but attending a Supercross race in a few years unfortunately is not going to be on our worry list if things keep heading in this direction. Not trying to be a downer but things are not going well and the policies being pushed are not sustainable.

When SX was in the Mercedes stadium in Atlanta, the sound was SO loud and obnoxious. The biggest problem was they had DJ Pauley playing and they would turn his screeching sounds up so loud that it was just an overbearing. It literately over powered the sounds of the bikes. It made me think of when you took an late 90's truck that couldn't play bass, but you still turn the treble down and the bass up and it was just distorted noise. And then they had the announcers turned up to be louder than the music and the bikes. It was bad.

I'd honestly be fine if the AMA came out with a rule that the bikes had to be under like 85-90db or something similar to a riding lawnmower for indoors. You can't make out the bikes while they are racing as is. Its just garbled noise

Even if the bikes were electric, they would make it like a club scene where they crank the music up so loud that you have to scream at each other to talk.

However, for outdoors, it is pretty cool to be able to tell the difference in the bikes just by listening to them. The dual exhaust Honda 250s and Star bikes had distinct sounds. It was cool standing on the fence when the bikes were tearing ass towards the up hill triple at Muddy Creek. You could feel the 450's power in the chest.
