Webb, 5 rounds in and no wins, 6th in the points

Edited Date/Time 2/8/2022 7:58am
I like Webb, but this is not what I expected after 5 rounds completed. Zero wins for Webb. 6th in the points. 23 behind the leader. I think his title chances are over for 2022.

Webb's finishes:

Kind of crazy to think that Kenny is only 8 points behind him. He crashed in 3/5 main events lol

Sure was a lot of chatter about Webb and the brand new bike... I certainly didn't buy it, but now you have Webb even saying that they haven't got it right yet. Title? I think he's out for sure. They'll be better as the season goes on, but P4 seems like the best possible result with the speed and consistency in the 3-23-21 camps.

I think the top 4 will be 3 - 21 - 23 - 1 this year.

Call it a hunch but I have a feeling like once we go East he'll wick it on. If Tomac keeps getting these great starts though he could be running away with it all.

Sometimes you simply struggle. Webbs title defense most likely is gone and the season is a write off and building year for the bike. Remember, that bike he was on was unchanged and absolutely dialed in for him and SX. So much so that KTM didn't want to make any changes even for outdoors. It will come around but this year won't be the year

It's still early, I don't think he's done yet. But if he doesn't win or at least podium in the next 2 races, bye bye title. He's going to have to make a hell of a turnaround, quick.

I think it’s the bike tbh - none of the кТм guys are looking very good on the new frame. MM25 has dropped like a rock the last 2 races

In his pre-race intro, it lists one of his hobbies as "winning". That's not aging well either.

I do honestly think the bike has a lot to do with it. Marv, Coop, and AP all don't look good on the bike. They have only had a few moments of being competitive, but barely for one race per rider. Cooper has typically been a good starter and then is also good at taking that inside line and pivoting the bike in years past. He's not doing that right now that I can recall. Doesn't look comfortable on the bike. JMHO

But Marvin is 32 years old on a SX only deal. I could easily see him doing about the same on the old bike.

Mookie is the best he has ever been (except in the whoops but overall he has improved a lot).
Deano is doing pretty good considering in what stage he's in his career. 9th in points when only one top rider is out is good IMO.

Plessinger and Webb are the two head scratching cases. Both have had one good result but otherwise mediocre results. Plessinger is a life-long Yamaha rider so i can see why it could take some time to adapt to the KTM and their whole program. Webb left Aldon so no matter what your stance is on Aldon and if he's good or not, that is a huge change in training program that could potentially be a part of Webb's struggles.

Anyways, Webb has to turn this around starting this weekend. He has lost too many points already and usually the guys that fight for the title start pulling away with consistent podium finishes and wins right about now.

Looking at that list Mookie is definitely overperforming expectations - which were high!

I agree, something is definitely off with Webb. Even when he does get good starts, he seems to go backwards. We haven’t seen any of the late race charges from him as of yet. AP7 looked a lot more consistent on the Yamaha or at least he has thus far. It doesn’t seem like any of the riders are comfortable as of yet with the new bike.

Webb needs to start consistently having podiums and hope he starts winning when he gets to the east coast to have a chance. And he better hope Tomac forgets how to do starts again on the Yamaha or it won’t matter.

Hey, you never know. They could build a really tight track with virtually no whoops...

If you recall last year in Atlanta, Cooper began the "residency" way off the pace of the leaders on those huge tracks with high speeds, big obstacles, and long whoop sections. Neverthelss, he and KTM were able to get to work (on whatever), and by the final round there, he was the race winner and was padding his points lead on a track was the most massive iteration of the residency.

History has shown that despite his supposed shortcomings, Cooper will compete fiercely and win on any type of track; that's why he's a multi-champion. But we're definitely not seeing that right now.

I'd be curious to know if anyone has ever won the 450 SX (250 smoke) title without putting a win up on the board by the end of the 5th round.

How long is Webb at KTM for? If his current level of performance continues, will we see him move to another manufacturer when his contract is up?

I do believe he's in a contract year. Kenny is in a contract year. There’s potentially an opening at HRC.

I feel like Webb changed dramatically from the 250’s to now. He’s way more calculated, and my guess is he was coached early on not to make rookie 450 mistakes but start going from a new playbook. It has amassed 2 SX titles, but it’s not the Webb from years past, and I get the impression he’s maybe a tad bored. His real self is more like a Bradshaw, Ferrandis, super aggressive and risk taking. Even if the tone downed version has worked, he looks like the change also depleted some passion for the sport. I bet he wants to let the younger 250 Webb back out, or maybe he’s forgotten how to find that again, but I do believe they strategically switched to this more mature racing philosophy that’s just not as fun. He’s the type of guy who wants to hang it out.

From my understanding the Husky and Gas Gas bikes DID NOT receive the new frame change.

Remember last year when Coop Rog and others went on an emergency test bike session?
Came back swinging and won the title.

Maybe they should go back to the old frame cuz he sure doesn't seem the same guy. Woohoo

The results, as is often the case, don’t tell the full story for Webb this year. Yes they are poor, but the way his races have played out is more concerning. Webb is never really the fastest guy but he’s always had a knack for racing whoever is next to him. He makes passes and protects his position without sacrificing his lap times perhaps better than anyone else in the series. Or at least he has in years past.

This year he has consistently lost positions to Barcia Ferrandis and Kenny just inside the top ten. Last year Cooper could pass and drop any of them on the way to the front. If the bike were the sole reason for these performances then I think we’d see Webb a lot more fired up, but he isn’t.

He sure looked better on last year’s bike, but it could become a PR nightmare if they switched back to the old frame…

On the other hand, his current results on the new bike aren’t really making for for good PR either 😅

The Husky IS the new gen bike. The GG is the 'old' model.

After winning his 2nd 450 SX title I’m guessing he lost the “ eye of the tiger “ a bit. Like Andersen did.
Hence the departure from Bakers factory. Andersen got it back but took years. We will see if Webb gets sick of riding around in 6th or not.
