The metal mulisha is stupid...and I can't believe a rider on JGR would be a member of the mulisha...JGR and the mulisha are polar opposites in terms of image and target demographic...and one is good for the sport, the other is an embarrasment.

A mulisha member being on the JGR team is counter productive to both organizations...

A "professional" is supposed to act like Joe Gibbs, NOT Brian Deegan....And the industry (riders, team managers, mechanics, team owners, etc) would do well to watch and learn from Joe Gibbs. If you want to attract more corporate sponsors, who's target demographic isn't the 16-24 "extreme sport" fringe demographic (which this sport will need to do in order to remain viable), then we need more Joe Gibbs and less mulisha.

Just sayin'...

My old neighbor in the IE used to go to the same church as a few of the "born again" MM guys... just sayin.

I think the whole white boy, wanna be a gansta thing is beyond lame, mainly because, if you dropped any of those dudes off in a particularly hard part of LA, they prolly wouldn't make it out alive... I mean seriously, real gangbangers don't talk about it, they just kill you.

That said, I dig JG anyway, think he has great style and speed. If he can find some consistency, betta whatchout foo!Woohoo

Big Frikkin' deal...I don't care if Obama has a mulisha sticker on Air Force one...they (and their image) are still an embarrasment to the sport of mx/sx.

They should stick to freestyle...and stay out of mx/sx and let the real athletes and real professionals race.

Hmmm, I could respond a couple different ways here. I'll go with this one......Check NASCAR out some time. Joe Gibbs doesn't always go for the driver with the squeaky clean image. Gibbs doesn't seem to have a problem with sponsors dropping him cause of his drivers. In fact he has the most hated driver in NASCAR driving for him now.

Ever check Josh's arm out? Dude has tats allover it. Don't judge a book by it's cover.

who realllly gives a fuck? I'd rather see JG show some loyalty to his MM pals by throwin up a hand gesture than hear him read off like a robot all of his sponsors. Give the guy a break and find something else to bitch and moan about.

So?

(I don't follow NASCAR)

I absolutely hate the tats, piercings, flat billed hats, black socks black shoes black shorts black shirt, spiked hair, blah blah blah attitude that some of the riders have...It takes people's attention away from the amazing talent and athletic ability it takes to succeed at this sport and takes their attention to those things and leave them with the impression motocross racers are a bunch of crazy kids that have no respect for anyone or anything and are just rebels

IF the sport was full of RV's, RC's, AS's, IT's, RD's, TF's, KW's...it would be better off.

You do realize it's possible to be "a clean cut professional" and still have personality on the podium right?

I hate the podium recitals as much as the next guy...but I hate the bad ass wanna be image even more...

Better off for who? There seems to be a sponsor for all types of the personalities. Not everyone likes the pc type rider. Yes you may not like the the tats and black socks, but mx just isn't for you. There are guys who like the opposite of Dungey and Short. That's what makes sports so great. It's a melting pot, you have yor clean cut guys, but you also have the other side. mx wouldn't be better off if everyone had a robot personality.

Better off for attracting corporate, non-industry related sponsors, that's who it's better off for. You think Corn Flakes or Mattel, or Bank of America or wants to put their logos on a tatted up wanna be bad ass?

When target wanted to sponsor someone, who'd they sign? Dungey....Who does geico sponsor? KW, TC...who did the most for the sport in the past 20 years...MC, TP and RC...all squeeky clean image guys. What athlete did the most for Skateboarding? Tony Hawk...squeeky clean. How about BMX? Dave Mara...squeeky clean...

The tatted up riders haven't done much for the sport...historically. Have they?

As far as growing the sport (attracting outside corporate sponsorship...which is the only way it's gonna happen), the clean cut guys are the way to go...so it's better off for anyone that will benefit from growing the sport.

And to say MX isn't for me because I don't like the tatts and black socks is stupid considering the biggest names in the sport have been just the opposite (RC, RV, David Bailey, MC, TP, etc)...

Again, it is completely possible to clean cut and not have a robot personality...look at TP for a perfect example of that. And the tatted guys aren't automatically full of personality either, they can be just as robotic as Dungy on the podium....it isn't an "your either tatted up and full of personality or clean cut and robotic" mx can, and needs, clean cut and full of personality.

Bad ass wannabe?? Here's a story about the guy your calling a bad ass wannabe. Glen Helen Nationa, my friend takes his kid to the pits. They know I like Josh, so my friends 6 year old likes him too. I'm kinda this kids idol. That's another story. Anyway they are by JGR, (kids dad is a nascar fan) waiting for Josh to sign a poster for the kid. Josh gets called away and after about 5 minutes most of the crowed that was there move on. Josh's dad comes up and starts talking to the kid. Josh's dad talks to the kid and my friend for 5 minutes and say don't go anywhere he will find Josh and get him to come say hi. Josh and his dad come back over and chat up this kid. Josh gives the kid some goggles and they find a hat for Josh to sign. There is your gangsta wannabe, don't let ones appearence determine what kind of person one is.

Perception/image is everything in marketing...

And this isn't just about my perception...corprate america and their customers aren't likely to read this thread and find out that he's a good guy...they'll see the tats, the flat billed hat, and the gang signs and associate him as a wanna be bad ass...

Perception/image is everything in marketing...

Josh is percieved (obviously) as a wanna be bad ass...doesn't matter if he's a saint...people buying the products the companies are paying him to advertise don't know him...all they know is what they see....and they base thier perception of a rider on their ability and appearance...josh is a great rider...but the tats and gang signs make him come off as a wanna be bad ass....and that is going to turn off corporate america.

Oh, who'd Nike sign??? Dungey and Stewart...both clean cut....

just sayin'...

Titan youre entitled to your opinion but it takes ALL kinds of personalities to make up a sport. And at the end of the day you're wrong. WAY wrong.

Hawk and Mirra both elevated their sports, but the Mulisha ALONG with Pastrana elevated the ENTIRE X Games just as much if not more. And if skate and bmx ONLY had Tony and Dave, it wouldnt be where its at today. You're vanilla man, but there are ALOT of other flavors at Baskin Robbins people like.

I work on an almost daily basis with Brian Deegan and you CANNOT believe how badly corporate America wants a piece of his style and personality. His black bill and black socks are in hi-demand with normal corporate companies. Check his rally car at this summer's X where he will compete in Step-Up, Rally X and also commentate on the stage he helped build.

So Titan with all due respect, keep eating that vanilla ice cream, most of the rest of us like ALL the flavas out there. You cant have one without the other.

If you cant already tell I also work with Josh. AND I also work with Trey Canard. I get to represent two opposite ends of the spectrum between JG and TC, and both of their unique styles and personalities are equally in hi-demand. So check your style Titan because its growing old. Smile

I can't believe this has gone 4 pages...

Kids have always been pissing off the old folks. I was pretty straight laced and still pissed my folks off with my punk rock and not quite short hair...

Get over it... Realize you are old and that not every kid is a Dungey.

If corproate america wants a piece of deegan, why don't they have it? Why don't I see Mattel and Bank of America and Corn Flakes logos on Deegan? Is he turning them down? (It appears you might actually be able to give me an honest answer on it...since you're "industry" and all).

The largest corporate America sponosrs in mx right now are probably target and nike...both sponsored clean cut guys....

I see what you're saying (and vanilla really is my favorite ice cream), but it just doesn't seem that reality is supporting your arguement...

Reality is that clean cut guys propel sports to their highest levels as they appeal to the broadest demographics...be it mx, or basketball.

If you're in the "know" here "mr. industry" then I'd really appreciate some honest answers....

It just seems to me like the clean cuts guys are the "front runners" in terms of growing their sports, and the tatted up dudes are the back markets hanging off their coat tales trying to get their piece of the pie. Could be wrong though...just my perception.

Titan wrote: Better off for attracting corporate, non-industry related sponsors, that's who it's better off for. You think Corn Flakes or Mattel, or Bank of America or wants to put their logos on a tatted up wanna be bad ass?

Maybe they don't, but there are companies that do. Toyota and Snickers are on Josh's bike, those are two pretty big sponsors.

Dude, just cause one has tats doesn't make them a bad guy. We can argue all day long about who sponsors who. Plenty of sponsors to go around. Ever seen 338's bike and sponsors? He has a few outside sponsors. There are plenty to go around.

The tatted up riders haven't done much for the sport...historically. Have they?

Unlike you, I've never really judged who has done what for the sport based on if they had tats or not. Your right though, the "clean" guys may have historically gotten the sport where is. That doesn't mean anything though. MC and RC, yes were squeaky clean, but they were also the very best at what they did. I imagine if MC was tatted up, he would of still gotten the respect he has today. Watch X Games and see what the athletes look like. More people will watch X games than watch any mx national on TV. Sponsors fall all over themselves to get a sticker on a freestyle bike or bicycle. Metal Mulisha have a gang of sponsors.

And to say MX isn't for me because I don't like the tatts and black socks is stupid considering the biggest names in the sport have been just the opposite (RC, RV, David Bailey, MC, TP, etc)...

Again, your taking the fastest guys out there at he time. Josh is now one of teh fastest racers. Just cause he has tats doesn't make any difference. You misunderstood, I didn't say mx is for you cause you don't like tats and black sock. I said it wasn't JUST for you. Meaning just cause you don't like the tats and black socks, doesn't mean everyone else hates it too.

Exactly, and taking your logic, seems that mx is big enough to have both the tatted guys and those without. I'm not saying the guys with tats automatically are a better interview. I'm saying mx needs both.

As far as growing the sport (attracting outside corporate sponsorship...which is the only way it's gonna happen), the clean cut guys are the way to go...so it's better off for anyone that will benefit from growing the sport.

MX needs both...but in order to grow it needs clean cut personalities.

And the X games is far bigger than mx...of course corporate america wants a piece of it. But the piece of mx and sx they want is with the clean cut guys.

anyway, lets just agree to disagree then...I can't argue this all day. I've got work to do.

Smile

So are you always a smartass or do you just play one in a movie? Do you REALIZE how large corporate America is? You just named 3 companies! LOL. One of which, Mattel, Deegan competes against with his Hevy Hitters line, which is one of the best selling toy lines at Wal-Mart. Hmmm, Wal-Marts a pretty large corporation.

You said it yourself. Target and Nike have their athletes they want to work with. As far as them being the two largest in our sport, hmmm did you read your Business Journal today or just the cover?

What about the corporate sponsors of JGR, whom Josh Grant rides for. Interstate Batteries, Toyota, Farm Bureau Insurance, Sport Clips, Snickers... Are you keeping up with all of this or did I lose you? And due to Josh's success AND his personality, ALL of these companies are taking an even BIGGER interest in OUR sport for the future.

And lastly Josh has a personal deal with Callaway Golf. Is that vanilla enough for you?

And as far as Deegan, he will driving a newly designed and released Ford Fiesta at the X Games. Along with that, Ford wants a piece of him and his truck racing. Hmmm, Ford might have their financial hands full, along with the rest of the American car industry, but theyre a pretty big deal here in the US and they want to use Deegan to release their new car to the World.

Once again, corporate America is alot larger than the 3 or 4 companies you listed. But then again, all you see is the vanilla. BTW, Deegan will have two more large American corporate sponsors on his rally car come X Games, but Ill let you read them on his Ford Fiesta while you sit on your couch in the middle of suburbia and watch.

And oh yeah, howz that Lebron James fella doing with corporate America with his arms sleeved in tattoos? He's a regular visitor here in Omaha with Warren Buffet. You know who Warren Buffet is dont ya? Hes an old, white billionaire and he doesnt seem to think there's anything wrong with a little attitude, style and tattoos.

So there ya go, straight from "Mr. Industry" himself. LMAO

First of all, Dick Head, I've never EVER been in a movie....

And second of all, I used Mattel, BofA, and Corn Flakes as EXAMPLES of corporate America...anyone with half a brain would know that...Hell, did you really expect me to list every company in corporate america??? (You really thought I though those three companies were "corporate america" didn't you??? pffft....come on dude, I ain't gonna list every company in the country) Those three were the first to pop in my head (I just paid my mortgage to BofA, ate cornflakes for breakfast, and have a mattel toy car sitting on my desk).

just because walmart sells his toys doesn't mean they "sponsor" him...He ain't advertising for them on his bike is he?

Sponsoring a team is far different than sponsoring a rider...and it seems they are in the sport because JRG is in the sport.

Good for Deegan for landing ford...even a blind squirrel can get a nut every now and then.

And who are Lebron James and Warren Buffet?? Never heard of em...

By the way, you can be clean cut and still be an individual and have personality, attitude and style...personality, attitude, and style aren't only traits of people with tatts and bad ass images....

Like I said to trip...we're just going to have to agree to disagree. I hate the wanna be bad ass image...I think its bad for growing the sport of motocross/supercross (maybe not for rally, or truck racing, or NBA teams. or freestyle..but bad for moto)...that's my opinion...you have a different one...I think you're wrong, you think I'm wrong...we'll leave it at that (and you can leave your condescending attitude at the door next time...thanks). Or maybe you need to name drop some more so you can give yourself some credentials...yeah, do that. But you know what they say about people that voluntarily provide their their credentials on internet message boards, right? or maybe you don't.

Whatever...got more important things to do right now...like go get another tat and pierce my nose (I've gotta get me some attitude personality and style)....have a good day.

Denny, thanks so much for your opinion. I would have said all of that, but it sounds better comming from you. Im a big fan of JG because he's different than everyone else. Who cares what people think. He's making a living out of racing motorcycles. If the Mulisha wants a to represent Josh, good for him! Look, if you dont like the guy, then fine. Dont come on here and make yourself look like a jackass because you dont like how he acts. He is one of the coolest guys in the pits. He just won his first outdoor national in the big bike class and he's representing the mulisha.
Big deal get over it...
