Update: Bike has been at Yamaha, first they said it was the ECU so got a new one... no go, then they said the fuel pump was bad... no go .... still won't start, and they do not seem to have any idea what the issue is... at this point I am going to get the bike back and sell it for a huge loss.... Anyone have any last try ideas.

So sorry to hear this.

At this time, does it seem you can plea with the Yamaha shop and ask "If you can't troubleshoot this successfully, what can be done? As the factory trained team, I feel you guys are in the best position to root-cause this problem ... because there is a problem, and it's fixable. The bike CAN be fixed. What do you recommend I do?"

This assumes their Shop Manager will respond ethically along-the-lines of "Dang - my guys should be able to figure this out. We'll look into this deeper at no charge. It will be a training opp for the team. This is THEIR JOB and it is my responsibility to ensure they can do it."

I picked the bike up, they wanted to tear the engine down.

I am starting over myself I went and got a leak down tester tonight and gonna go through a checklist of my own first.... The bike acts out of time I have had several 4 strokes in the past do the same thing that has been off a tooth etc... however the timing is not off...

On older bikes I have heard of the cam gear slipping on the cam itself. Even though the dots are lined up the cam lobes would be out of time. At tdc I believe the cam lobes should be pointed up and out making a sort of v shape. Best of luck

When I bought it, it was dark so I did not get to ride it. He fired it up and it had very crisp throttle response and sounded healthy. Engine had no rattles or weird sounds... When I got it home same thing fired right up, and it was like 20* out.. went to take off and it died twice and then that was it..

going to do the leak down tonight will keep you all posted thanks!

No air is going through valves out the exhaust or airbox? Sounded like air was leaking in the video bought obviously could have been through the piston into the crankcase like you said or anything in background regardless you should dig into the thing. I wonder if he had just rebuilt it then sold it as soon as it started and he never actually rode it after the rebuild.

Did you try cleaning out all the connections, yamaha is known for bad electrical connections those years. Also try unplugging a few sensors and see if makes a difference, I'd start with water temp sensor as that's easy to get to.

Hey guys thanks for all the replies. The air was coming out of the timing inspection hole full force. I went ahead and pulled the head off tonight, at first I thought the piston looked great and began to worry, however I noticed both compression rings will NOT move at all.. the top one sort of pushes in where they meet, but that is it. I can not even get them off so I would say they are just wore out and stuck??? Anyhow I ordered a piston, and taking my head to a buddies shop to get a once over to make sure its good. Hopefully mid week I will have it back together!!!

My guess... previous owner did a "top end" on it and used the incorrect rings for that piston or installed them incorrectly.

Perhaps an oiling problem? Make sure the oil nozzles and passages are clear.

I had that happen on a 99 YZ400 that sat for 6 months. The rings stuck from pump gas and the bike wouldn't start. I could feel the compression drop and it barely ran. On the recommendation of my dealer I put a product Yamaha made called Ring Free in the cylinder without the plug and let it sit over night. The next day it ran fine. Another reason I won't run pump gas in any of my toys.

It's been a while but that looks right. It's probably not essential all the time but if you are going to store your bike it might be a good idea. You could probably get the same effect if you used Stabil. Run some for a little bit before you park the bike. Or run a some Tru Fuel from Homie Depot or Lowes through it.

I ordered a GYTR piston kit from Rocky Mountain, and they sent me one on the box it says for years 14-17 Will this fit or did they send the wrong piston............

Update: Finally got it going!! Spent a few hours on it tonight and she lives!!

New fuel pump
GYTR Piston
Took the head to my local race shop buddy had him do a mild port, lap the valves, and shim it.
FMF Titanium exhaust
Some pegs
and a few other goodies because XMAS :D

Excellent - now go ride that thing for 100 hours and forget this debacle!

Thanks for taking time to create this thread - I learned some great things (Ring Free, the shop manager at the Yamaha dealership you went to needs to be on a PIP, etc.).

I’ve heard that and seen it too. Best fix is to tack weld sprocket to cam
