Seems people are selling their once adored piece of gear. Are the times changing?

Yes. That has been the case for awhile now. I think I’m the only one out of all the people I ride with who still wears one. Who even wears one in the pros now? Kyle Chisholm?

Marvin ditch it earlier this year after his big crash on one of the on off section in SX.

I thought he ditched it due to the new Airoh helmet contacting in more?

Either way, I don’t care what the pros wear or don’t wear. I still run an atlas.

TBH, it could be because of the new Airoh helmet. I just know he wore one until that crash. I think he tried wearing one after he healed up, but ultimately decided to no longer wear one.

I remember someone handing him one on the podium after a main event. Grinning

Still feel naked without my kidney belt. Never bought into the whole neck brace thing though. Had compression fracture t4,5,6 back in 85’, was concerned might do more damage than good.

I don't remember which round it was, but it was odd to see. It will be interesting to see if he shows up at A1 with one or if Leatt and him parted ways.

Actually, we'll see if he has one on in Paris.

I’ve never worn one but that new low profile atlas (I think it’s atlas) is really tempting me.

I won't get on a bike without my Leatt 5.5 neck brace.

Is buying a used neck brace similar to buying a used helmet ? If its had any kind of impact is it compromised ? Do they have a shelf life like helmets do ?

I did the same, Threw mine off along the Baja 500 course.

I still wear mine. Even if you go back a few years, loads of pro’s were wearing them. Bas Vassen used to wear a brace, stopped wearing it, had a neck injury that made him temporarily paralysed, vowed to wear one again, did for a bit, again stopped using it & now he’s permanently paralysed. It seems the riders who don’t wear one get more neck injuries than those that do.

I should imagine it’s similar. You’re not advised to buy a second hand chair seat incase it’s been involved in an accident.

I’m a fan of the Atlas air. It’s my favorite fitting personally. Previously used a leatt and had multiple big get offs with helmets retired and never had neck issues. Idk if it helped but I won’t go without it doesn’t affect my riding personally.

I do think the original neck brace designs caused a lot of issues with collar bones and lower spinal injuries (original leatt with a single rear stabilization point right over the spine) the split load of. The newer ones seems a lot more thought out in their design with spreading the load into the rib cage area a collar bone and spine.

With that said, I do think helmets working more rotational protection into them has made a big change in cervical injuries though and potentially make a bigger impact on prevention than the neck brace but hard to really say 100%

He threw one off at Budds 07, but had an issue with it coming unbuckled at steel city ‘11 too and quit wearing one altogether in 2012

Edit* it was JG that tossed his at Budds 07

Little different, I look for the ones that are super clean, this years graphic, and say only worn a few times.
Unlike a helmet that you can tell if a neck brace has had a hit, check for cracks and stress marks in the plastic. When I wrecked in my leatt (first generation model) it cracked the carbon fiber rear support. As for shelf life probably a long time. No impact foam like a helmet.

I don’t get the controversy. Anybody whose crashed in a crash it’s designed for, can feel it working. I’ve used my neck as a pole vault pivot fulcrum or whatever numerous times….except that one time I broke my C1 in a Jefferson fracture and ended up in a halo brace for 4 mos. - that was 20 years before Leatt.
