I do think the original neck brace designs caused a lot of issues with collar bones and lower spinal injuries (original leatt with a single rear stabilization point right over the spine) the split load of. The newer ones seems a lot more thought out in their design with spreading the load into the rib cage area a collar bone and spine.
With that said, I do think helmets working more rotational protection into them has made a big change in cervical injuries though and potentially make a bigger impact on prevention than the neck brace but hard to really say 100%

Unlike a helmet that you can tell if a neck brace has had a hit, check for cracks and stress marks in the plastic. When I wrecked in my leatt (first generation model) it cracked the carbon fiber rear support. As for shelf life probably a long time. No impact foam like a helmet.
