SG12 boots: Same size but different fit

I purchased a brand new pair of SG12 boots about a year ago. They fit amazing for my wide foot(size 12). Boot was stiff but very comfortable. One of my riding buddies was getting out of riding a few months ago and I purchased his SG12 boots(size 12) for really cheap. Same size as my boots but they are extremely tight to the point where I am unable to even ride in them. Any reason why this could happen? I understand new boots have to be broke in but my original boots were comfortable out of the box.

The reason I ask is because I am not going to wear the used boots I purchased, and I am in need for some new boots. I am worried about the sizing of the SG12 now. I know many large online retailers offer free shipping if the size doesn't work out, just trying to gather as much info as possible.

Did he have insoles in them? The factory insoles for Gaerne are just thin slabs of foam. Some people with thinner feet will put a gel insole in to take out some of the slop. A thicker insole puts your foot higher into the boot where it tapers so it will make it feel narrower, as stitch down boots are widest where the upper meets the midsole.

Dig out the insole and compare it to yours. I bet he put one in and forgot about it.

Great idea. I will check when I get home from work.

the front of the sg12 got a lot wider around like 2015. If you prefer the narrow fit of the old ones just get the sg10s

I was given one year old SG12's in a bike sale May 2020. I had fairly new Tech 7's that were barely broke in.
The SG12's were sooo good that I have not worn my tech 7's since.

I have two pairs of SG12. One from 2015 and one from about 3 months ago. They both look and fit exactly the same.

I thought it was just the opposite? I have super wide feet & think the 10”s are wider? I have a set of 12 & 10”s from about 5 years ago…. I have my new boots stretched by a ski shop….

Long time Gaerne wearer here and have a new set of SG12’s that took a while to break in compared to older models. Found the initial fit a little tighter as they broke in they loosened up and fit like my older models.

What I did to break them in was wear them on my first ride out on practice day to get warmed up, get some lines, and get into the flow of things, switch to my old boots for my middle two motos, then back to new models for the last moto when the day was starting to wind down, rough track, fatigue, etc. to put some use in them. In about 3 to 4 weekends of this they were broke in enough where switching out was no longer needed.

In the past I have also filled new boots up with water, letting them soak before riding, dumping out then riding in them wet. Speeds up the break in process as well.

In the old days we got new hockey skates to fit better soaking in the tub then putting them on for an hour.

I used to put them in the oven and then put them on hot. That seemed to work the best.

Yes that works just like the sports store baking them.
