Ok, looks like I might be going to my first National (to watch obviously). I think Red Bud is a good 5-6 hour drive for me at minimum. I guess the best thing to do would be to drive up on Friday and check into a hotel and get to the track early Saturday. Any suggestions on hotels or where to stay? Looks like my wife will probably be going along and at least one of the kids. Is there anything in the area going on that night since it's the 4th of July? Do I need to get my tickets in advance like with Supercross or do you just show up and pay at the gate? What time should I be getting there and will traffic be an issue? What other questions should I be asking?

Go to the track Friday to hang out and watch the night mx. Small track but a lot of fun to watch and people watch. You'll see a few moto-celebs there as well.

Don't bring in any contraband either just a waste of money.

If the Sheriff's set up their "corral" for the nare-do-well's up in the party section I recommend finding someone near to that to hang out with . There is at least one "escapee" situation that will have you laughing your ass off. memo to runner: fat cops don't run and they block the paths for the in-shape ones.

Traffic will be an issue if you leave sat right after the pro race. You can always just camp at the track sat nite and watch the amatures go sat night and sunday morning.

well i recommend staying there and witnessing what goes on at night Evil lol but as for hotels i think the best place to stay is down in Indiana, i know thats where all the riders stay if they get a room, it was about a 40min drive last year when i went to visit a friend of mine who races. 2 yeard ago we got a room and decided to stay the night at the track due to what was going on at night

Well, I'm not looking for wile parties (contrary to my normal wishes) but I'm thinking of getting the Friday-Sunday pass and going up early enough on Friday to check into the hotel, catch a little night racing and then the fireworks. Go back to the hotel and get back there early Saturday for the main goodies and then leave as soon as the race is over and drive back home.

Back in the day a bunch of riders & mechanics stayed in Benton Harbor/Saint Joe area.
It didn't seem to be as crowded as the South Bend area.

Mishawaka, IN. Thirty minutes from track. Rooms usually run 79-99 dollars a night and it is very easy to get to the track from there.

I'll be doing the same route, for some reason I thought you were around STL somewhere. I'm flying into STL Thursday night and driving to my folks over in IL. Then picking up some friends and heading up Friday morning. We are staying in South Bend. Decent hotels, Notre Dame, and about 15 - 20 minute drive to the track. Also, if you are looking for some non-moto things, I haven't checked but more than likely the "Taste of Chicago" will be going on so if you detour into the city there is lots of music / food / etc. It's about two hours from Chi-town over to SB. We did this last year but plan on just hanging out in SB on Friday as I don't think we will get there early enough on Friday for festivities at the track or a detour into the city. Also, I know you mentioned no wild parties, but, if you do plan... Scratch that, race is on Saturday. We always forget about Indiana not selling beer on Sunday and Michigan not selling it until noon. Anyway it's Saturday so you can pick it up anytime on the way in Smile Another tip is to get there plenty early on race day and get the trackside parking. You can pretty much park 20 feet away from the Leap and setup camp for the day. Walk around and check out stuff, but always have a cool spot to sit and rest. I think it's $20 bucks extra for the trackside stuff but well worth it in my book. And like others mentioned there will more than likely be big fireworks show at the track Friday night. I also think South Bend puts on a pretty big one as well, I haven't really looked into that, but between SB, the track, and taste of Chicago you should find plenty to do in the area.

25 years ago there was a Holiday Inn in Niles, MI. Closer than South Bend.

ps- Year before last, the only ambulance run during the Amateurs was for a CR250R vet from Niles, when he swapped out, in front of me, trying to triple The Leap.

South Bend may be a little pricier being next to the turn pike......If you stay in Indiana remember the time difference.

South Bend no longer has a time difference, they changed that this year.

I checked that Holiday Inn and was full but I ended up getting one in South Bend near the college. Thanks!

Well, I will be camping in Lot A (old folks and small kids) . In the track area I will have a straw Jimmy Buffet hat with a masking tape name tag "Highsider". I will be avoiding Rupert, so say "hey" if you spot me.

I might have to do that! I'm a little freaked out by Rupert as well. Smile I'm planning on finding something to do in Chicago Friday afternoon/evening and then heading to the Hotel late that night and try to get to the track early on Saturday for the festivities and then driving back home that evening.
