Does anyone know why the gear companies don't make replica jersey's every season? I imagine it has something to do with the amount of sponsors any given rider may have, and the gear companies not wanting to pay a sales royalty to 10 sponsors on every jersey sold, but does anyone here have any insight on this?

They wouldn’t sell enough to justify doing it. Every now and then you can find them though. Somehow I ended up with a Tedesco replica jersey years ago. I don’t even remember how I got it. Too many concussions 🤷‍♂️

So if they can't make money selling jersey's with every sponsor's logo on it, why don't we see more signature product made by individual sponsors?

R2r. Or st judes. You can but legit stuff. They used to make replicas,. Ebay had some. You can make your own, a few logos might be hard to get though. Some top riders will not sign replicas though.

I think JT answered this on a PulpMX show once. According to him, the price of the jersey would be astronomical because of royalties to the sponsors on the jersey. Basically, they would be way too expensive so nobody would buy them.

What a great way to shoot yourself in the foot. I know what i would choose as a business owner. People buying jerseys with my company's logo on it vs nobody buying these kind of jerseys.

That makes zero sense. You buy soccer jerseys all the time with sponsors on them. Same with the new NBA rules that allow it. If they can figure it out, surely someone could work it out at the scale we’re at. It’s probably not worth it with the small scale of fans that we have but who knows…

If you buy a LeBron jersey, or a Messi jersey, their multi-billion dollar teams can eat the cost of sponsor royalties, not the shirt's manufacturer. If you buy a Ferrandis jersey, Thor eats the cost of paying Dylan's personal sponsors (and AP's, and Webb's, etc), and I just don't see them doing that.

This doesn't make much sense to me.
Dylan's sponsors are paying him to have there logos on his jersey. Why would u then have to pay them back for free advertising. Unless the advertised company claims Thor is making a profit off there logo.
All they need to do is have a contract clause stating company logos may be used in merchandise.
You can normally buy team shirts and replica graphics with all the logos.

Thor making money off a logo that isn’t theirs is the problem

Around 2002-2005 Fox did RC & Bubba replica jerseys. And Im sure Thor did a Reed one as well.

Race numbers on the back and Names of course. It makes sense for the gear companies to do them and if other sponsors have big demands on some royalties just leave that particular logo off of it.

To display that this is a 'Replica' and not an original, they should imprint the riders signature somewhere on it. Anyone remember the Danes 'Dave Thorpe kit?

The problem is the companies with logos on the shirt have to protect their trademark. Once they don't protect it they lose the right to protect it and anyone can use the logo without paying them.

But that could be covered via a simple clause in the contract. Officially licensing your trademarks and logos for replica jerseys has nothing to do with Joe Blow deciding to download your logo off the interwebs and printing his own.

Call me a bad businessman, but if I were "insert sponsor here" I'd feel like I robbed the sumbitches blind to have people buying replica jersey's that included our company logo. As others have pointed out, it's free advertising and is effectively more bang for your buck than what you'd get by just having your sponsored athlete wear the gear.

Fox pays Honda a set royalty for every set of that gear they sell and Honda had to approve of the overall design.

Riders change their kits every week, you can buy the same kits through FOX TLD O'neal, only difference is they dont have the numbers or the sponsors printed on them, which most places can add for you if you want them. Riders also change their sponsors all the time. Another option would be to buy a race worn jersey, they do get auctioned off all the time.

When the hell would you wear a Ken Roczen jersey? To the mall? While riding? Pick up kit at the races?

Personally, I would want to wear my Roczen jersey while balling in my R8.

Not enough money to be made for such a product otherwise a company like Fanatics would be all over it.

Here is a Thor, McGrath jersey from about 20 years ago.
Not sure if the were available to the public, got it from the Thor distributor here in NZ.

I’d frame it and put it up in the man cave.
