Goggle Sponsorship...How Does It Work?

I've seen a few pictures in past of bags full of dirty goggles, but just curious how it actually happens. Let's say I am a 100% rider at a national/supercross. They give me goggles at the beginning of the event. Do I give those back to them at the end? Do they rebuild every part (lens, foam, strap). The next week could I be using the goggles Cooper Webb used the week before? Or are they brand new, every weekend? Always wondered this.

I've often wondered that too. I know the goggle reps bring all fresh goggles to the riders, but I don't know if they are "NEW" fresh, or "REFURBISHED" fresh.

If it were me, one of my contractual requirements would be that I need Brand-New, out of the box goggles at all times. I would gladly take a pay cut for this option.

Depends who you are...top guys get 6 pair all new every weekend.
Next level guys get those top guy goggles all cleaned and serviced. Approximately...

Given how goggles are thrown quite frequently into the crowd by the top dudes, I would think they’re fresh every weekend. Supported (not necessarily factory) riders I imagine would have an allocation for the year and a service of cleaning/prepping provided. After that, I would say it’s an allocation of goggles/tear off’s/roll off’s and merch for the year.

Understand, Goggles are generally made in Vietnam, or Thailand... Even your $150 pair. Like Nike Shoes, made for a few dollars. Throw away.... They'd not ever be 'cleaning' them, never ever!

Agree with the above, a friend of mine is friendly with a family who one of them races MX2 world champs with a factory ride. My dude has had probably 40 or 50 barely used pairs from them over the years, where they have them piled up so high they're just getting in the way haha.

Even had a couple of pairs off him lately ourselves, they're all basically new but usually have no lenses for some reason?

I thought I remembered hearing that your "race" goggles turn into your practice goggles, and then from practice to your "during the week goggles.

Yeah that seems to be exactly how it goes, at least over here, unsure how it differs in the States but makes sense.

In one of the Tommy Searle vlogs from the British Championship he was stopping by the goggle cleaning truck to get some back, so I guess things get much tighter at national championship levels outside of the AMA, which is fair really as it's obviously a way bigger deal to most.

This is not true for all goggles companies. SCOTT for example has 2 factories where the goggles are made. 1 is in the United States while the other is in Austria.
Now for the racing question. Often times the goggles are collected back and put into the wash for the following weekend. All depends on which round tho too. After a round like Southwick those goggles wouldn’t be used for Pro racing. The factory riders get a fresh pair for every moto.

Apparently, goggles today seem to be distributed in the exact same manner as moto hoes in the 90's!

The new goggle smell brings me back to when my dad bought me my first pair of Oakley Crowbars at our local bike shop when I was 5. I wore those things all the way home, I buy new goggles too often because I like the nostalgia.

This. New Oakleys are one of my three favorite smells. I get the nostalgia from the original "O" Frame, though. Cool

The other two smells are racing castor (of course,) and my prom date's Eternity perfume. Ohhhhhh yeah......

I worked for a goggle company in the late 2000s out of college.

The top guys usually ran custom goggles and were given a podium pair for the podiums. Mid level guys will get some keepers for during the week and the then a lot of the race day goggles are turned in and cleaned, re-prepped and sometimes re foamed. Usually we gave them new goggles for mains and used previously worn units for practices etc. The challenge was getting the customs back from the top guys as we usually only had a few molds of those frames in the US or the foam was special. The teams would turn in a bag full every weekend. At one point we were going through two full gear bags of goggles to clean and prep every week during the season. The top guys would have their goggles prepped by the athlete rep while everyone else got cleaned by peeons like me at the office.

Interesting. Thanks.

What other pro sports, if any, did your company service like that?

Yup

And then there’s my Airbrakes: the box they come in says China.
